HTC EVO Handbrake Settings with Video

Export your settings and let me take a look at them. Or try the preset I posted. It's probably something simple.
HandBrake is really pretty good, don't give up just yet.

I take it your trying to encode the torrent? What OS?
HandBrake can get "wonky" on DL'd videos. I had one just the other day that "skipped" through parts.
It's encoding something that's already been encoded by somebody else that can cause issues.

how would i go about exporting my settings?
i'll try the preset you posted once i get home.

i am trying to encode the torrent. it's already in mp4 format. OS is Win7.
i attempted here at work on my computer which is actually a computer specifically for encoding (i render lots of vids at my job), which cut the time in half, but it still didn't come out right haha.

but i'm gonna try your preset, and then if it still doesn't work, i'm gonna try something else that has been recommended and see what happens.

i'm not sure how to rip blu-rays, which is why i used a DL as a source file. heck, i don't even own a blu-ray drive in my computer and never planned on it. so if i can't get it to work with the files i'm attempting this with, then i just won't have vids portable on my Evo.

this is basically just a test project, and it's not turning out well at all.

on the right side as a preset, i either chose iPhone & iPod Touch or just used Universal

i'm ripping a DVD now and i'm going to use a different prog to upscale and render. maybe i'll have diff results. guess we'll see.
 
Kinda off-topic, but I want to test a ton of different settings like you guys in the shortest amount of time possible.

I have a Q6600 at stock (2.4) right now, but it's been at 3.0 for the past few years. Would I notice a significant difference in encoding speed if I OC'd it again?

yes, most likely. although i have a laptop at home and a desktop at work,
the laptop runs a Core 2 Duo at 2.53Ghz while the one at work runs a 3. something (3.13???) and it cut my encoding time in half.

best way to know how much of a decrease in time would be to try it of course.
 
welp super can't read VOB files apparently so i guess that's it for me. ohhh well. not sure how you guys did it but kudos to you. at my job, it's just drag and drop, thanks to some neat scripts that some of the guys came up with. i don't know enough about encoding to figure out what the issue is here.

edit: apparently super does support vob. so again, not sure wtf the problem is here.
edit2: super is working. it won't let me upscale but maybe that's because i didn't select stretch, even though i'm keeping same aspect ratio. hmmm
 
Super is a whole lot harder to get right IMO than HandBrake. The settings you posted look right to me, I don't see any reason they would come out right besides the source.
Instead of encoding the whole DVD save yourself some time and just test encode one chapter. Did you try the settings you posted on a DVD?
I used 7Beta/RC for a few months and don't recall any issues.
BTW you tried on the work AND home computer and neither worked? What version of HandBrake do you have installed?

I don't own a Blue-Ray either. I guess for true 720p we'd need to encoded from one.
Too much expense right now to install a slim Blue-Ray in my PC then pay extra for Netflix to send them ): That just made me feel better (:

As far as overclocking, the way I see it, I'm an OC'er from WAY back, it not worth it.
You may pick up some encoding speed but the system will have to be absolutely stable. No over heating, no RAM issues, etc. You could pick up a fair amount of time by changing your encoding settings. You really won't notice much between almost any H.264 settings.

too late for a test lol. i've been running super and it's prob about half way done. it was most likely the source file. handbrake was 0.9.4 i believe. whatever the newest is. and yep, tried on two different computers.

if we don't have 720p vids, then we can't watch full screen because SD is only 720x480. i wonder what d00d's source file extension was, and the codec. what's strange is the mp4 file i had as an original source used an avc codec. handbrake supports that so who knows whats up with that file. well, i just read that it needs raw video so yup, that's probably it.

edit: oh i understood everything i saw in super as far as settings. pretty much the same thing. i see that stuff on a daily when dealing with videos.
 
Sorry if this is a noob question but is it possible to convert a 1080p mkv file to a mp4 file playable on the Evo w/ Handbrake?
 
I followed the suggested handbrake settings but I'm having problems with playback. Audio works/sounds fine, but no picture!

I made sure the container was set to mp4, but the end files are still .m4v. Is this correct?

Anyone else having issues?

Yep, me too. The files are mp4, but no video, and either ok sound or garbled sound. Working on torrent mkv or avi files, which I imagine is the issue (a mp4 download worked fine on the EVO without modification via handbrake).

I think mrvirginia (who lives in NC....interesting) had similar problems with Handbrake, and was trying a different program (Super) to see if that would work.

mrvirginia, any success with Super?


Of course, not sure why I am even worrying about this now as I can't even get my phone to connect/sync with the network (have a very big, pretty phone that makes voice calls and nothing else). Sprint's answer after 1-2 hours on the phone is try again tomorrow (as the network apparently has pooped out and just said screw it).
 
Ya you shouldn't worry about the network problems, they're pretty strained tonight.

My source for handbrake are DVD's. I feel there must be something I'm missing.
 
Yep it must be an issue with the transfer, either my handbrake settings or something else. I downloaded a 3rd party video player off the market, and get the same issues. Audio works, picture does not.

(As a note I've tried more than one movie, all of which share the same problem.)
 
Just checked my old rip of Cloverfield done for the Pre and 48Hours done for the Evo.
Both works, audio and video. Screen is marvelous (:
 
I'm using Linux although I didn't have any problem with my Pre and Windows. My older files, like Cloverfield was done in Windows.
The OS does seem to make a difference, When I 1st started ripping I couldn't get an MP4 to work without FFmpeg although the Mac ans Linux users could.

I had this issue today too (in handbrake) and could not get it to work with the h.264 setting. Only audio, but I tried with ffmpeg and it worked fine, but I don't want to settle for that. Gonna try again tomorrow and I'll you know how it goes.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. Definitely keep us posted, and I'll trouble shoot and do the same.
 
I'm on an iMac too. Wonder if that is the issue (OSX version of Handbrake having something screwy).

Going out of town, so won't be able to mess with this until I get back. Hopefully you guys will have it all figured out by then.

I did check using Meridian (the network finally decided to drop by and say hi) and it had issues with the Handbrake files too, so at least we know it isn't just the Google Video player.
 
In the meantime I found a workaround.

These particular settings work really well, although probably not preferred with the large file size.

Start with the Normal preset.
Go to advanced options, set the bframes to 0 and uncheck CABAC
If source is DVD, add decomb default and detelecine default in picture options
If source is HD change anamorphic strict to loose and lower resolution to 800 wide.

Edit: still not perfect. There is a slight audio sync problem, (hardly noticeable but it's there.)
 
I just converted a 1080p movie into the Evo and noticed that the screen is stretched. The quality is much better with the black bars but does anyone know how to get rid of them but still maintain the quality?
 
Make sure "keep aspect ratio" is checked. Even if your video is letter boxed android video player will allow you to zoom to fit the screen.
 
I've tried 3 different settings on 3 diff movies twice over and I can't get one of them to work on the evo after the conversion :( I downloaded one movie in m4v and that one works just fine...shoot me.:confused:
