HTC EVO Handbrake Settings with Video

So I've been trying to work out a method of getting my Media Center recordings onto my Evo. They are in wtv format. For anyone interested, here's what I came up with and it works well.

-Convert them to dvr-ms format by right clicking and choose to convert.
-Convert them to mpeg using dvrmstoolbox.
-From there convert them to H.264. I used the guide here, as mentioned several times on this thread. I tried several other ways with no luck.

One other thing is to watch for a framerate of 60fps. When I converted my file to mpeg it was 60 fps and the above guide has you leave the framerate the same as the source. I changed that to 29.97fps. I know there is a discussion about the Evo being capped at 30fps and when I didn't catch this and tried to play a file at 60fps it choked and the video didn't advance. I finally remembered the 30fps limitation and checked it. I'm not sure if this is a problem others are running into on this forum.

I tried the method describe above and also the method described here:

How to convert videos and transfer them to the HTC EVO 4G - Know Your Cell

I was able to get the video on the phone but its very pixelated.

I'm not sure what to do to fix. Please advise.

thanks,
Josh

What was the original resolution of the video you have? I had no issues with pixelated video and the shows that have slightly lower quality were less than 800 px wide to start with. The videos all look great and I work with video and images all day every day. With my settings above, I have converted from 720P and 1080P to 800px and T.V. shows that are only 624px wide I just leave at that pixel width. The images that 'inflewence' posted seem about right as far as what you should be getting if converted well.

My source video was a dvd, so it was 720 X 480.

I'm very frustrated. Does this perhaps indicate something wrong with the phone? Or is more likely that I'm doing something wrong. Is there somewhere where I can download a file that is known to work and try it to see if its the phone or the file?

You could just try to download a 720P movie trailer then convert it to see what it looks like on your phone. I think you might be doing something wrong. I would gladly convert the same trailer you get so you can compare my results to yours .

just downloaded an mp4 player and the videos aren't working properly on my computer, which means the files created from handbrake aren't good. Any suggestions? I followed the steps above exactly? Not sure what to try next.

What step do you think may be causing the issue. My screen shots above are what I use for all the videos I converted and they have all been without flaw which is saying a lot considering I just discovered Handbrake 2 week ago.

Look at my images and try to match that in the file you are working with. As I said, just download a short movie trailer that can be done quickly and try the settings.

1. Import source file (Preset - 'Normal')

2. Make sure 'Keep Aspect Ratio' is selected but choose Anamorphic - NONE -

3. Select width as 800px then if you move the mouse over to the height and just click it, it will adjust automatically. Don't try to upscale a lower quality file. If it is smaller than 800px then just leave it. The quality wont improve much.

4. Second tab= all video filters should be off

5. Third tab= Video Codec I use is Mpeg 4 with frame rate same as source . I choose constant quality but you must, MUST , move the slider all the way to 100% then bring it back down to 90%. It appears as if it is at 90% at default but the minute you move the slider you see that it is just a weird program glitch and it was really at a much lower quality setting. I tested this with many videos and below 90% is where you start seeing slight quality loss.

6. For the fourth tab just select the 'Mixdown' as 'Stereo' with a sample rate of 44.1 since that's CD quality and what most video files are already at unless it came from a direct DVD rip which means it might be higher at 48khz. Keep the audio bit rate at what the original audio was at . Most of my files are 160 or 128. If you know audio quality with files then ignore what I am saying and correct it to your liking.

7. The DRC setting is to improve sound volume of the quiet parts of the audio and ultimately is lowering the dynamic range by compressing it hence the DRC (Dynamic Range Compression)

8 The last tabs aren't needed unless you need to do subtitle work and more advanced stuff. Hit start and the resulting file should play on the Evo's default player or the NSWPlayer just fine.

As for a computer mp4 player , you can using anything even VLC player or KM Player to see the results.

I tried your settings exactly and its still pixelated. I downloaded just one chapter from a dvd? should i be trying multiple dvd's? I'm not sure of a website where i can download a movie trailer to test.

This is what my movie looks like after converting.

HandBrake • View topic - Pixelated Picture??

Do I need VLC?
I agree with the last guy (in the link you provided) that what you are seeing is some kind of video protection program acting up. Macrovision or some other source of encryption. What is your video source? I don't understand how you can download one chapter of the dvd. Download from the internet?

Handbrake lets you convert single chapters.
Not sure if that's a handbrake problem or VLC. Vlc will do that on WMVs especially after forwarding.
Try another dvd as test though.

If this is a protected dvd how are you decrypting it?

I am concerned about where your source file is coming from. You can get a movie trailer from any site that has movie trailers even the Apple movie trailers site has links to download. I don't believe that what you are seeing is a direct Handbrake issue. Is there a way that I can get a link to where you got your source file?

My source isn't being downloaded. I apologize. My source are DVD's that I own!

To I need to do something to decrypt them in addition to using hand brake?

I apologize as I'm a novice at this stuff, and My understanding is very limited. I appreciate the responses to help.

Thanks,
Josh

Yes it would be wise to do a rip of the DVD first if you have been having issues..

You guys are making it harder than it needs to be. Just use Xmedia Recode and your video are sure to work with the EVO. The Evo needs the MP4 video to be in either ffmpeg (lower quality) or h.264 in baseline (not main or high cause it won't play those). In Xmedia Recode you can physically select the h.264 baseline video format and aac audio thus taking the guesswork out of what your output MP4 will be.

If you guys or gals want to see what format your mp4 is just download a program call gspot or mediainfo. You can tell if your MP4 will play in the EVO or not just by looking at the info from gspot or mediainfo.

+1 on Xmedia Recode. Fast, easy to use, EVO preset and also allows you to preview what it will look like before it encodes. Good call.

The evo will playback content at 720p on the screen and using that resolution will also provide the highest quality playback over the HDMI out.

As long as said content is a file no larger than 2GB, correct? Can't really encode a nice quality 720p movie that remains under 2GB. Kind of taints the attraction of the hdmi output.

well maybe a good netflix app can bring some nice worth to the hdmi out.

I'm not sure I agree with this? I agree that the 2GB limit puts a damper on a 6 mbps 720p encode, but that's far from making the hdmi output less attract. Short clips of the kids to show family, high quality tv episodes, or even low quality video to help out a long trip with the kids are enough for me.

Although, a 1.5 hr 6 mbps video is about 4GB so you could just split it in two.

Can anyone explain to me why when I try to read a DVD it just hangs using Handbrake (but all other rippers/converters work just fine)???

I REALLY want to use Handbrake but can't. Both of my DVD drives hang when I try to select them inside Handbrake.

I'm on Windows 7 32-bit.

Handbrake is not a real ripper. You need a real dvd ripper to rip to either iso or a dvd file format folder.

+1 again. I don't really understand the intricacies of video encoding and bitrates and all that jazz, just the basics. This was really simple to use, got me a fantastic looking movie (The Dark Knight from a DVD rip). It did cut the sides off, but that is not an issue for me at all. Fantastic picture is all I need.

Highly recommend. Very simple.
