HTC EVO Handbrake Settings with Video

FYI: For those of you testing handbrake for DVD rips, there is an option near the top of the source tab labeled chapters. Select just one chapter to start and finish (ie Start with chapter 2, end with chapter 2), then test whatever encoding settings you want. This will obviously only create a video file of one chapter, but on a fast CPU, it'll only take one minute to encode. You can load the test video up on the phone and tinker without waiting a full hour to encode the full DVD.

Also, the iphone/ipod touch preset is a really good starting point for Evo video.

I don't want to give up but im damn near close. I finally got the video to work but now the audio is slow. I saw that I should change it to 44.1. But that still hasnt work. Idk whatelse to do..... at least the video looked AMAZING!!!

If someone has used my settings, and they worked, can you let me know? Thanks.

Settings for internal Evo playback are good!

I'm due to get my HDMI cable in shortly, I'll let everyone know how the 720p output playback works out.

handbrake takes too long to convert. you guys should try "Wondershare Video Converter" they have settings for android phones. i just use the nexus one settings. wondershare converts faster and videos look great.

That's not exactly correct. Handbrake can take some time depending on the settings.
Using FFmpeg I can encode a two hour movie on just over a 1/2 hour.

Aspect ratio: 800 x 480
Video codec: H.264(x264)
Framerate: Same as source
Avg Bitrate: 1500
Addio codec: AAC(faac)
Audio mixdown: Stereo
Sample rate: 480

All other settings stay at default.

These are from HD rips my man does them and uses those settings. It looks, 3D.

Inflewence: Or anybody else that might know.

Those screenshots look awesome and from the look of them, they appear to use the entire EVO screen for displaying the movie, is that correct?

I cannot figure out how to get the movies to play on the entire screen.

Just like watching a "Widescreen" movie on a tv, you have the black lines above and below it, in essence, "framing it in", I have the same thing happening on my EVO conversions.

If I don't have the "standard" versions of the movie and only the "widescreen" am I unable to use the entire screen of the EVO to view the movies?

Does anybody know what the story is on this? Is there a way to convert your movies, widescreen or standard, so that they play clearly, crisply, and fully on the ENTIRE screen of the EVO?

I've tried at least 8 to 10 settings now including bumping the ratio's to the max and everything else, and I still can't get rid of the the black areas framing the movie in. FYI - I was able to reduce them to a minimum, but they are still there and the picture doesn't have the "right" look to it.

Who knows, this handbrake stuff is a ton of fun trying to figure it all out.

If you don't want the bars you should turn on auto crop.
The phone will stretch the video vertically though changing three aspect ratio some. You can't have both.

Those screen shots of the video really show off the 16 bit color ):

What folder would i place the video in on my EVO? I converted the video on Handbrake and copied the file to the DCIM/100MEDIA. It shows up that its copied viewing it from my computer but when i look for it on my phone its not there. I looked through the camcorder vidoes as well and nothing. Also from my computer it looks like it copied as a DIVX movie file and the size is 1.11G . In its original state is was a MKV file. Can anyone help?

If you used HandBrake it's not a divx. HandBrake only does H. 264 and mp4.
If it is divx then that's why itdoesn't show, Android doesn't support that codec.
Any folder will do, I have. Foldercalled "movies" where all the files get dragged and droppedto.

I don't know why that keeps getting recommended for just that reason.

Just to make this post "worth something" I just noticed that the Evo will crop the sides of video in full screen when encoded to 848x480, without letterboxing.
When not in full screen it shows a tiny letterbox but the full resolution.

Ok, I've tried 3 different programs, and only one worked...

I have a BD rip of Avatar h264 AAC copy.

I have been using the sample copy with is 1:30, so that I am not wasting my time with it.

I have followed all directions with converting, and the video is outstanding. Audio is what I seem to be having a problem with.

The audio is extremely slow, like in slow motion, but I have been following everyone's exact settings for HB.

The weird thing is, when I use FFmpegX, using the same settings, it came out fine. The only thing that sucks with that particular program is that it took a half hour just to do a minute and a half clip....

I am using Handbrake (64 bit version) and my original file is as follows:
Format: H.264
Resolution: 1280*720
Frame Rate: 23.98
Bit Rate: 1862 kbps

Audio
Format: AAC
Sample Rate: 48000Hz
Channels:2
Bit Rate: 347

Those settings above are for the Original file and trying to convert using the ones suggested for the EVO....Any ideas?

Any help would be much appreciated

i'm trying to convert a foreign avi that has the subtitles hardcoded onto the screen but after i converted it they were gone. i've tried checking "forced only" AND "burned in" (at the same time) but the sample doesn't show any subtitles either. any suggestions?

At first with custom settings via suggestions on here, I had a blank video, but I could hear audio on my evo. Then I imported fr4nk1yn's settings and also tried the universal ipod settings and both won't even open on my EVO. What could I be doing wrong?

P.S. All the files could be opened on my PC.

What I'm doing is using a combination of Handbrake, TSMuxer, and Eac3to to downsize blu-ray's to 800x480. Even though DVD is 480p, its at a much lower quality than compared to the blu-ray source downsized to 480. See here if you don't believe!

Even when set to the same bitrate for the DVD source and the Blu-ray source (using constant quality via Handbrake's RF setting at 24), the whole Avatar movie came out to 1.96GB, barely within the Android Gallery's 2GB limit!

For all those having issues with only the Audio coming through and not Video, in Handbrake make sure to uncheck CABAC Entropy Coding and set B-Frames to 0 in the Advanced tab.

You guys are making it harder than it needs to be. Just use Xmedia Recode and your video are sure to work with the EVO. The Evo needs the MP4 video to be in either ffmpeg (lower quality) or h.264 in baseline (not main or high cause it won't play those). In Xmedia Recode you can physically select the h.264 baseline video format and aac audio thus taking the guesswork out of what your output MP4 will be.

If you guys or gals want to see what format your mp4 is just download a program call gspot or mediainfo. You can tell if your MP4 will play in the EVO or not just by looking at the info from gspot or mediainfo.

My settings didn't work, looked good on the PC though.
Use the iPhone/iTouch Preset and change the resolution to 800x480 with no auto crop and call it a night.
That's my Evo Preset now. IT is slow though, my dual core is chugging along at 16fps.

I have had great results using Handbrake. I use the Mpeg 4 -(ffmpeg) setting as it produces a smaller sized file and converts faster. The quality difference is not noticeable from H.264 on the Evo screen as long as you select a 'Constant Quality' setting of at least 90% . I attached images to show my settings. On the 'Picture' tab change the Anamorphic option from 'Strict' to 'None' and select the width to be 800px. Even though the Evo can produce 720p video, it can't actually display them at that resolution on screen as the screens native resolution is 800x480px Converting a video to a size larger than that would just take up more space for no reason unless you planned on streaming this via the mini HDMI in which case the external monitor would be able to display the 720p resolution. My movies end up being between 900MB to 1.5GB with the exception of one really long movie which was 1.9GB. T.V. shows are around 175-250MB and just to test I converted one to 720p (a 30 min show) and it was 350MB As you can see, converting it to 800px wide saved me around 100MB.

i discovered yesterday however that there is a Divx player for Android now so for my T.V. shows on the go, I no longer need to convert. I am sure that they are still working out the kinks in that player so for my larger movie files I may still convert them to MP4 to avoid possible choppy playback but so far the Rock Divx player seems to work fine and plays other formats other than .avi aswell.

Hey guys, long time lurking first time poster. I used Handbrake last night to rip a dvd. i used the iphone/ipod settings. Picture quality came out fine but the volume was extremely low. Did I do something wrong? What settings should the audio be?
