Root htc evo, rooted and having trouble flashing

xcecilia

Newbie
hi, everyone. sorry to come in not knowing what i`m doing, but i thought i did.
how many times a day do you hear that?

anywho, i rooted my htc evo 4g last night using htcdev, captain throwback and then unrevoked and all seemed to have gone well.

this morning i decided to flash my first rom and am having trouble. i`ve read a lot of great things about cyanogen, so i thought i`d give that a spin.
however, once i`m into recovery and searching my sd for the zip, it`s not there. when i simply hit "install from sd: update.zip" it`s not taking it.

from reading other things, i was under the impression that update.zip was a radio (not that i know what that is :\ again, my apologies for being so completely naive).

anyways, it`s telling me that the "directory does not exist" when i am hitting install from sd. i rebooted and tried to get into recovery again and got the red triangle, several times now.

what am i doing so wrong that i`m not able to get into recovery anymore and what can i do to get cyanogen to flash? :(

edit: it`s also telling me that i no longer have super user permissions, and i found a similar post to this, but didn`t fully understand what they were trying to have me do to fix it and i`m not sure if they solved their problem, either.

Ok then, about to eat dinner but i see no one has answered you so let me see if I can get you on the right path.

You flash roms like that cm one you are interested in, from your recovery.

i haven't done that guide but i am fairly certain it has you install the amon ra recovery. Does it and did you? Prob had Superuser in there for you too.

The rom should be downloaded to the root of the sd card, which means, not in any folder.

You should use the recovery to make a nand backup of your current setup, nands are your best buddy when you have a problem, so make one, and make sure you back up your wimax too every once in a while.

Once you have made your nand backup, you need to use the wipe menu to wipe everything but the sd card, 3x. There is a zip in here named Superwipe, which is NOT to be confused with superuser which would do some of that for you too.

Then you use the flash zip menu to navigate to and select the rom you downloaded and flash it.

We have all sorts of guides in here to help you with flashing, did you read any of them? Life after root section would be helpful.

be patient when you flash a rom, it takes a while to come back up, just put it aside and try to leave it for a bit.

I would suggest you flash one like Mikg3.11 for starters though. There is more of a learning curve with aosp roms like cm but we are here to help if you need it.

Dinner here, be back later, take it slow, read, ask questions. Measure twice, cut once! :D

I've never heard of a ROM or kernel or radio being named update.zip. Where did you get it from? This is what is causing your problems.

That red triangle is the stock recovery. You will need to reinstall Amon Ra and Flash a ROM. I would suggest decks reloaded if you are thinking about going AOSP. Its the best one there is right now. If you want to stick with sense use MIkG 3.11 or Tommy's EVO Classic

Sweet instructions...couldn't have said it better myself..well done sir:)

it does, and i did, however, when I COULD open recovery, it sent me to clockwork mod recovery.

i did try to reflash amon ra, and it didn't seem to help, and I can't get into recovery, still. at the same time I lost access to recovery, I lost superuser. I'm not sure what I did so wrong to make it disappear on me, I didn't think I did anything, actually haha!

I've read bad things, but I thought id give rom manager try to see if I could get to recovery that way, got another error about how I don't have root privilege, and then was denied access again. think if I could just figure my way back to recovery, i would be able to figure out the rest...
any suggestions there?

I will definitely keep your advice in mind though, for later on! thank you!

oh! and I forgot, I didn't do anything with the update.zip radio and such, it wasn't in what guide I used, but I read it elsewhere on some rom wiki. the trouble i was having with cyanogen was that it WAS in the root folder, but my phone wasn't "seeing" it, so I couldn't flash it. I guess it doesn't matter, though if I cant get into recovery to begin with! :p

Can you get into your bootloader screen? power off...volume down/power at same time....reading your op you should be s-off correct?

Edit: get rid of rom manager...it's too buggy

i cant get to bootloader without problem, yes.
I have s-off and no watermark thanks to captain drawbacks method. everything looks alright as far as that. I did a couple checks to make sure I was rooted and superuser WAS there at one point. I used titanium backup and some screens app, I forget which, with no problem. now, though, i cant.

how do I go about doing it that way?
I did something alone the lines of this:
downloaded the p whatever file
changed the name, made sure it didn't have two .zips
put it on sd root
went to bootloader
selected update now
went through
said no to reboot phone and went to recovery.
is that right? I don't know of any other way to do it.

I went through it when I was doing the actual root and it worked fine, it didn't start being weird until I apparently messed up trying to flash cyanogen..

First of all, you made me smile when you said Captain drawback:D No worries tho, (captain throwback)..
Anyhoo,
That file, PC36IMG file was probably your recovery that you correctly named.
Do you still have that file on your sd? If it is still named PC36IMG.zip, your bootloader should read it again...If not, I can give you a link for it.

ahh! I know its throwback! my phone changed it >.< hahaha, I'm not a very good proofreader..

it is still there, though, and it still faithfully asking me if I want to update every time I go into bootloader. i have done so several times and still can't get to recovery.

Hmm..when you highlight recovery and push the power button, what happens?

when I hit recovery, I'm stuck with the phone and the red triangle and I can't get out of it unless I pull the battery.

I'm going to keep searching around, but ill check back in tomorrow afternoon. thank you so much!

the pc36img you sent worked beautifully. i erased the one i had and it went right into recovery. thank you so much!

messing with superuser now.

super user is up, it looks very different from the one i had before, though! this one has an android and the last one i had was a little ninja guy. does that make any difference? or is it just a different look on the same thing?

Same thing, mine looks like an android guy with a "pirate patch" over 1 eye and it says superuser;)

perfect (:

does anyone wanna see what we can do with getting me on cyanogen? what makes it different than flashing other roms? (i`ve not flashed one yet, but as you can see, my first attempt ended badly)
or are there any other roms you prefer? (screenshots?)
i`m not in love with sense, i don`t hate it, but i would just like a change for a little bit, so i`m trying to shy away from anything sense-looking haha

I am SURE you will like it
Flash it, love it, live it, preach it!!!!!!!!!!!

okay, change of pace here. i was reading about having gps issues with cyanogen and was wondering if there were any problems when it came to gps with mikg?

There are hardly ever issues with GPS on sense based ROMS.

There can be issues on AOSP ROMS (ie decks reloaded, any flavor of cm, MIUI, ect), but there are GPS fixes available. If you want to try an AOSP ROM run decks.

Just do a nandroid before flashing anything
