Root HTC EVO V 4G Boot Loop

Okay. I'm really scared to S-OFF D: I'm following the RUU part (preliminary steps) now. When I did the fastboot oem lock thing it said FAILED but I tried it again and it seemed to say it already was whatever it was supposed to be. Anyways the RUU thing is running now. When I originally did the stuff, I used this guide: http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-a...ing-evo-v-4g-roms-kernels-using-fastboot.html . Do I have to S-OFF? I DONT HAVE ELECTRICAL TAPE and poking at the back of my phone really frightens me :(

OH THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH!!! IT STARTED IT STARTED ~ T.T IT FINALLY WORKS. *whew*

I still don't have any electrical tape, and I'm still really frightened that I'll screw up and my phone will never turn on again 3; The "newbie's guide" I followed warned that " It makes things much easier to do but it also takes away the security that keeps you from bricking your device. " D: D:

This means you're 100% stock, right out of the box. Your TWRP or 4EXT recovery is gone. You'll have to root again, and install superuser...

You also may experience some issues with the phone as you're phone is basically like it would have been in May 2012...which means there are no OTA updates applied to it. If you just want to start using your phone again, do an HTC Software Update, but only the first one. DO NOT TAKE THE SECOND ONE. The first one should be about 14 or 15 MB. The second one is like 50MB. Do not take the second one.

If you do, you will not be able to run the RUU. If you somehow bonk your phone again, and need to run the RUU, you won't be able to. I can't stress this enough. Stay away from the second update until AFTER you obtain S-OFF. If you're never going to S-OFF, still stay away from that update. As mentioned, the RUU won't work if you take that update.

If you were S-OFF, it wouldn't matter...but as S-ON, don't do it. If HTC ever releases a new updated RUU, then perhaps it will be OK to take the second update.

Oh for certain. I'll be sure to never install that ungodly update I don't even know what they are. But is it alright if I don't do the S-ON? What's the chance my phone will turn off and never turn back on :O

PS. I found a stupid paperclip with that insulating stuff

OFFTOPIC: Does AdAway work with S-ON? It says it doesn't but I always felt like it did. I must be stupid hehe.

Is it safer to stay S-ON or S-OFF (for someone like me) ?

What time do you plan on going to sleep tonight?
I suggest that you leave your phone alone and pick this up tomorrow, seems like your stress levels need to come down a bit. Also, make sure you post in Remanifest's thread that he linked to. He will help you with any step you need help with, but if you end up in a crisis situation at 3am, he may be asleep. Establish a window where he is active on the forums so you know he'll be there when you need assistance.

But before you do anything, read through his procedure COMPLETELY and ask questions BEFORE you start.

I suggest that you go for S-OFF. Once you're S-OFF, you can take those OTA updates without concern. You will have full control of your phone at that point, and the RUU will always run for you. Your HBOOT version is 1.57 right now. If you take the second OTA, it will be 1.58, and the RUU won't run properly if that happens. If you were S-OFF, you could take that update, and still run the RUU anytime you want.

Just remember, if you ever bonk your phone again in the future, everything is fine unless your HBOOT fails to load. This forum can get you back on track.

BTW, the RUU was a shortcut. Brian could have eventually gotten you back up and running without it, but sometimes it's best to just start fresh to save time.

Thanks a bunch! I think I'll S-OFF tonight. There's no way I can get to bed knowing my poor phone is in this state. Thanks a bunch. I'll keep you updated if something goes crazy~

From my newbie help thread:

What is a md5 file? Or an md5sum?
md5sums are basically fingerprints of a file or a folder on a computer. They are posted so that you can check the md5sum of the file you download against the md5sum on the post. In rare cases, you can get a corrupted file, so it's smart to always check these -- ESPECIALLY when you're flashing firmware (radio, HBOOT). In Linux, you just go to a terminal and type: md5sum -c filename.md5

For Windows, it looks like this tool would do the trick.

If you need further help with the S-OFF procedure please post in there so your questions can help people in the future with the same questions :)

I want to thank everyone so much for their help. I was able to follow http://androidforums.com/evo-v-4g-all-things-root/695161-s-off-root-fix-everything-all-in-one.html this guide completely, and on the final ROM step, I chose to flash this : MidnightRom: CM10.1 (3/19/2013) Version 1.04. I did the WIPE thing before flashing.

After flashing, it does the exact same thing that was happening before. It will start the boot animation, and instantly power off. I'm restoring the BACKUP that was made during the guide using 4EXT. This should restore my previous ROM and everything should be okay right? Is Harmonia the best way to go? I don't know why Midnight Rom is giving me troubles now.

Can you put the results of your HBOOT screen? Just copy down the text that's on it and put it here please? I'm thinking something didn't flash properly.

The restore worked, but when I restarted, my phone showed the HTC logo, and powered off. I am in the same predicament that I was in when I started. Is it all because of my flashing the Midnight Rom? (The Rom I flashed this time was Midnight Rom CM, but previously I was using Midnight Rom Senseless). Same stuff is happening D:

Thanks. Do you know if the RECOVER in 4EXT should have worked? As it did not.

<VOL UP> to previous item.....

EDIT: Recovery was showing the wrong time and every recovery I've used always showed a messed up time I dunno if that has anything to do with it i'm desperate but that time thing is probably irrelevant. D:

That's very odd.

Go back into your recovery and choose "wipe everything (except sd card)"

When you're done with that, reboot the recovery (in the reboot menu) and choose to "wipe everything (except sd card)" again. From there, try installing Midnight ROM again.

One thing is that some people get bootloops with CM ROMS. I don't really know why, but it's pretty common. If you want Jellybean, there's a lot of nice options out there... I really like MidnightROM Jellybean, though. Try to install that instead?

Summary: Wipe everything but SD 2x, install a different ROM.

Sorry for your troubles, but we will get you through this :)

Thank you so much!! I'm going to do that stuff now. I'll update when done.

BTW, the weird thing is I'm not getting boot loops. It gets to boot animation, then power off. Is that called a boot loop too? I'm not familiar with terminology.

WHY?? IT'S STILL NOT WORKING. SAME THING IS HAPPENING. ROM FLASHES SUCCESSFULLY. And then on reboot it doesn't reboot, and ends up shutting down. If I try to start it again.... it shows the htc screen.... and shuts off. And then goes back to htc and I think it's a boot loop now. WHY?!

Sorry for the late reply, my son woke up & needed me to put him back to sleep.

No, being plugged into the USB port shouldn't matter at all.

The only thing I can think to do is to run the RUU program again. Since you have S-OFF already, you can just run the program without doing any of the other stuff.

Once that's done, you'll be back on stock... Verify that the stock ROM works.

After you've got that working, then reflash the shooter_ota_1.14.652.5_1.50.5050jb.zip file again.

I've never seen this happen before -- did you buy the phone new or used?

New from Virgin Mobile's site. Okay, I'm glad the RUU whatever thing won't cause me to have to re-do the steps right? I won't have to do that ungodly wire touching that I failed six times?

Thanks so much for the reply!

Thanks. I'm going to run the RUU thing. I'm going to assume it works, since it did last time. What rom should I flash first? Which is the best rom/would you suggest? I'm so afraid of that weird boot thing happening again. 3;
