HTC Evo's SIZE!!!! OMG!!!!

I'm new here and soon to be new to the Android platform, coming over from the iPhone. I don't see the point in arguing that the EVO is too big. If it's too big for you, don't buy one. Seems simple to me. Whining about it on a forum isn't going to change the specs. I personally think HTC did a great job on the EVO increasing screen real estate and minimizing additional phone size. The Incredible has a 3.7" screen and the EVO has a 4.3" screen. My math says the EVO screen is 0.6" larger, and the phone is only less than 0.25" larger. I have been using the iPhone since the 3G was released and upgraded to the 3GS when it was released. I have always said when a better phone than the iPhone is released, I jumping ship. EVO pre-ordered at Radio Shack 3 days ago! :D

Your math is wrong. :) Screen sizes are a diagonal measurement so the increase in diagonal measurement doesn't equally increase the actual size by the same amount. If I hadn't been out of college for 42 years I might be able to remember the actual formula. :o

Besides, why should discussing an attribute such as size be whining? It's an important factor. Many of these phones will either be returned or not purchased due to it's size.

Bigger isn't always better, it's how it feels in your hand. :D

I don't think that anyone is whining, I think that they are simply voicing their opinions and discussing them. I think if people are bothered by that, then they don't need to read those particular forums. But, the truth is, yes the EVO is a huge phone, the question is, is that a good thing or bad thing, and do you like it or not. I went into Radioshack last night, and asked if they had a DUMMY of the EVO. They didn't, but had used an actual EVO several times. They just said it's basically the same size as the HD2 but a little thicker. They asked what phone I already had, and when they say my Incredible, they were comparing and talking about how much they prefer the size. For me, the EVO is too large at first glance, and when first holding it. However, that's just because it's larger than most modern phones, by far. However, it could possibly grow on me.

I understand what you are saying, but aren't both screens measured diagonally? The Incredible at 3.7" and the EVO at 4.3"?

Yes, but because the diagonal increases (whatever) inches the width of the phone would (in a perfect world) be less of an increase if all other things were equal.

Okay, I apologize for using the term "whining". I currently use an iPhone 3GS in a Seidio Innocase II. Held up to the HTC HD2 dummy phone in Radio Shack when placing my order the other day, the sizes were almost identical. Since the EVO doesn't have the ridiculously easy to scratch high gloss back, I will not need a case. Thus for me, the EVO is close to the same as I am used to.

Pythagorean theorem: W^2 + H^2 = D^2 where W=width, H=height and D=depth (correction: D=DIAGONAL -- was typing without thinking).

Pythagorean theorem: W^2 + H^2 = D^2 where W=width, H=height and D=depth.

Those three quantities are entirely unrelated. You're looking for the same formula, but where D = diagonal.

I just realized just how super huge the EVO will be. I went into a Tmobile store and asked the sales rep to see this phone called the HTC HD2, but I didn't realize that it was a tablet like the Ipad, except you can place and receive calls on it, and multitask. That thing was huuuuuge. I don't have small hands, but that was the biggest phone that I have ever seen. It made me jealous as a man, and made me envious, and I'm scared to have something this big around my wife.....she may not look at me as a man anymore. And get this, the EVO is actually 2 mm thicker AND WIDER than the Tablet/Phone known as the HD2. Wowsers!

Get over it, it aint that big. Heres a size comparasion video.

I have small hands and yes the EVO seems biog but I want this big screen on that phone. It's going to be awesome. And I always use a bt headset too so I won't always be holding it up to my ear. Last night while out with a friend who is also getting the EVO I told him that so and so who was out had an HD2 and he pulled it out and my friend held it and messed with it and he loved the size. I should of held it too but I didn't and it may be a little big for my small hands but the phone is going to be awesome. I'm used to my TP2 and my physical keyboard but I think with this big screen and it longways I'll be ok.. And I am hoping to get good one handed the other way for a quick text.

I went into Best Buy last night, and they had a dummy of the phone, I didn't spend much time with it, but it didn't seem to be too big at all, now I must admit I've never had a smartphone before (I have big fingers and none of those phones were built to allow me to easily text) but the phone seemed to fit comfortably in my hands and seemed easy to use when I held it up to my face. I think that it will be a great phone and it should grow on you easily

I felt like it's about the size of an iPhone with a plastic case on it...a little larger and a little thicker but almost all screen. I think I can handle that just fine. If not I will sell it and buy whatever the next thing is with similar specs and a slightly smaller screen. No biggie.

I was just at BB this afternoon and placed my iphone (with a plastic case) next to the Evo and it's practically the same size. It's just an illusion. Screen makes all the difference.

As long as this puppy fits in my back pocket (without sitting... bleh), I'm a happy camper. :p

Yeah the phone is big, but it has a much smaller bezel compared to any other smartphones out there. So its not so bad.

Just recieved a google I/O phone today. I was SHOCKED to see how small it was in person (maybe its because i have relatively large hands). My cousins have the incredible, and it feels really small; the evo is a little bigger, but i was expecting alot bigger. Remarkably thin as well. It has a nice weight to it, but still feels light. I've been carrying it in my jeans(not skinny jeans) all day, and havent had a problem with it.

BTW For me at least, a lot of the pictures of the phone online are pretty zoomed in to show the detail of the phone; this made it seem larger than it really was to me. Still pretty amazed at how easy to carry around this thing is.
