Help HTC hero and headphone jack problem

i have the same problem. one of my friends tells me it is the hardware issue, we can do nothing.

You most definately can do something, it takes a few minutes to fix, here you go:

My headset suddenly stopped working, was about to get the handset replaced when I found a way of repairing this myself.. seems its simply a software fault which should get fixed in the next firmware update, until this happens this is how you fix it:

first enable installation of non market place apps by going into settings > applications > and then ticking Unknown Sources

then.. open your web browser on your phone and type in the following:

http://code.google.com/p/toggleheadset/

you will then see a link to download the ToggleHeadset widget

once downloaded and installed add a new widget to your home screen, select Android Widget and then select Headet Toggle Widget

you will then have a button on your home screen to turn the headset on and off

This has now fixed the headset not working for me.. I imagine it will work for everyone else

enjoy =)

Another person i know with a hTC hero has let me know this has also fixed it on their handset ;)

If it fixes it for you please post a reply here :)

Thanks for the tip about the ToggleHeadset widget. Like others, I've suddenly suffered from my Hero failing to recognise I've plugged headphones in - and this widget has fixed the problem.

does anyone know how to fix another problem mentioned above: backlight of the buttons, trackball not flashing and the LED does not light when charging?

had same problem on a uk unlocked hero. turned it off then on again with the original headphones plugged in and it works fine now. hope this helps
Same issue with my unlocked UK Hero on T-Mobile...Just had to turn it off and back on... worked for me.

I have an application to close ongoing programs installed on my HTC Hero. My guess is that this app killed the process needed to detect the headset. A simple restart got the headset to start working again. Hope this helps :)

I have the same problem. Headphone socket worked for 5 days then broke.

The sound plays from the speaker but will not switch over the headphones. Also the notification light, function button lights and track ball light do not come on.

I tried a hard reset and it didn't work.

Does anybody know if this is an issue to be fixed by my network or HTC.. i.e. will Tmobile replace the phone for me, im not keen on losing my new phone for a few weeks while its being repaired.

I have sent an email to HTC .. not sure if it was to the correct department I used the general contact form - can someone point me in the correct direction.

There was a new ROM update released a few days ago - does anybody know if this fixes the problem?

Little update:

I got on the phone to Tmobile and since I was in my 7 day grace period they are going to replace the phone no questions asked. Has to be done via a courier through a direct swap.. i.e. he/she brings me a new phone and I hand over my old one.

Anecdotal evidence from other forums is that this is a software related issue - lights not working and headphone not being detected. The new ROM may solve this problem. Rebooting the device will also in most cases solve the issue - some people have mentioned taking out the battery and putting it back in after powering down the phone, to ensure that the circuits are really powered down. I haven't experienced the problem personally so I can't really comment.

Im going to try the new ROM tonight.. i've tried everything else.

I just got a reply from HTC as well:

Those issues could be a driver conflict and if you tried already the hard reset and still have the problems then returned to the place that you bought or contact htc to repair your device.

Oooh i love being a patron!

I had no lights working and had to toggle the headphones using the widget, as soon as I updated the ROM, all came back, no hardware fault...

Guys,
I bought unlocked HTC HERO in USA. After a month, the headset was not working, also trackball LED didn't work while charging. As, ToggleHeadset Widget makes your headset work :)and the LED flashes other times. THIS IS NOT A HARDWARE ISSUE AT ALL. I think there should a better way to correct the phone as it was.

Does Hardware Reset Works?
Does updating ROM Works?

Please let me know!

I also tried to contact HTC, here's my case:
As, it was still under manufacturing warranty, I thought of contacting HTC. They asked me to ship it to Texas. That's $20 approx. Then, there is roughly $40 in fees. Return shipping cost is also charged to me, that is, another $20. Total cost of: $80 . Also, living without the phone for about a month :( So that was not acceptable!

I hope either hardware reset or ROM update will solve the issue permanently.

I love my phone, I can't see it not working!

I just buy an Hero and have the same problem.

But I ve find a solution : restart your Hero with the headset pluged.

In this way, my hero recognize the heaset and everything work as well.

I can reproduce this if I do this: turn the sound all the way off to zero, then plug in the headphone. Now turn the sound back on -- the headset isn't detected and the sound keeps coming from the speaker. Even if you unplug and plug the headphone back in, it won't work now.

Not had this problem myself but have read of this problem on another forum when deciding to buy the phone.

There appears to be a tiny microswitch in the headphone socket that detects if headphones are inserted - the answer which worked for about 90% of people was to repeatidly (and gently) insert and remove the headphone plug a few times - it seemed like the microswitch was getting stuck and this losened the switch up so it was working normally again.

Hope this is the cause of you guys problems and that this possible fix works for you.

Just received a phone at Christmas and now have the same issue.

At the moment the solution of turning the phone off, inserting the headphones and restarting seems to solve the problem.

Fingers crossed that's it as I can live with that; albeit slightly miffed after forking out
