Updating the phone shouldn't be a problem once htc release 2.1 it will be like updating any other phone. Although you may lose some customization if three have done any (im not sure if they have)

personally I can't think of any good customization that can be done by a service provider, unless its three enabling skype for free.

I am currently on three but i brought the phone well before three had it on there network so i brought it outright, A good package others may consider instead of pay as you go is the payMonthly. A rolling contract first starts @

Yeah it was an upgrade I had to blag it though, I have been looking at other networks as my signal at home is very intermittent but the offer was too good to pass up! Im really impressed with the phone so far, having a few issues syncing via usb, im just recharging the phone now gonna give some of the advice on the forums a go! I have that build version and I bought mine from a Three store last week. It seems like a lifetime ago as I have spent hours playing with it.

With the upgrade still give us 7 screens?

I am not too fussed about msn on 3 as I think it only works on 3G or am I missing the point?

the lack of skype and msn just means it goes on ur data package... but if ur on contract you should have a unlimited data package so it wont effect anything.

If you upgrade using a Rom from HTC then you will still have 7 screens.
If you get a custom Rom you most likely get 5(like nexus one)

3 have a download link for Live Messenger on the website, when they send me a link through text I cannot access the link it, the browser displays (The page you are trying to access is a mobile internet browser page and only available on a 3 mobile)
Is there any way to change the link to a mobile internet one view on the browser.

I have the same problem, is there any other way to download messenger from the 3 site?

Also the two icons on my homepage - 3 Favourites and Planet 3 never work! Is there a setting I need to change maybe?

Methinks they only work via 3G and not Wifi but they are so hit and miss with me I have given up trying. I think the 3 skype is like that too.

I have downloaded Meebo and use that for MSN.

I did once connect via the 3 MSN page but I'll be blowed if I can do it again.

You have to access planet 3 using their own 3G data connection otherwise the links and their site never work properly. It's how they detect your phone number pretty much.

Impressions so far are good.

This is the least branded phone I have ever had from 3 in all honesty.

You got the basic net settings and a couple of short cuts and that is it. Everything else appears to be the norm.

The only problem i'm having is logging into their MSN app, only managed to do it once. Annoying!

Just a quick note, if u upgrade 3 months early with 3, they add those 3 months to the end of your new contract - i fell into that gap.
I bought a sim free Hero and will be going to sim only tarrif with 3 in December when my 21 month contract is over.

I did this too but it made sense because it put the cost of my rental down plus I got a new phone so it was a win win.

They could have just kept the price the same for my remaining 3 months and then started the new lower price but they didn't, suprised me.

Me again! i am currently trying to switch over to 3 from o2. have been given a payg sim card for 3 and put it in my hero (which is locked to orange but i'm using on o2 via rebel sim). All i keep getting are messages that say "just switch you're phone off and on again and all will work". switch phone off and on again and just keep getting the same message. anyone else had the same problem. Orange won't give me an unlock code for at least another 6 weeks.

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I too had trouble upgrading online, I actually sent 3 an email asking when that part of the site will be working.

I then went to my local 3 store, only to discover they didn't have any Hero phones in stock.

Finally, I rang up 3 customer services on Monday last week. The guy I spoke to said that I couldn't upgrade to a Hero from my Nokia for some wacky business reason which he couldn't tell me , he advised me to ring back later.

I rang back last Thursday and this time I was told "yes sir, we can process your upgrade for you." I was thinking, WTF?!? Why couldn't you do that on Monday?

Even then they fooked up - they gave the courier the wrong delivery address so my phone was delivered one day late. Still, I've got the snazzy little bugger now and so far I'm well impressed.

Just a word of warning when upgrading - be careful how much data you use before your new, internet friendly price plan actually kicks in. I got a text message from 3 today warning me that I only had 20% of my data allowance left (after I'd only had the phone for 3 days AND set it up to use my home internet connection when my wireless signal was in range).

I noticed the battery did improve after about a week, but then I have installed a custom rom since too which has helped some also. It's WIFI that kills the battery bigtime from what I have found though.

Upgraded to a 2200mAh battery and I absolutely hammer this thing and it lasts ages, good couple of days with constant web browsing on wifi and stuff.

I use WIFI quiite a lot , so that probably explains it.

Hey guys... I've had my HTC Hero for about a month now and love it but I cant seem to root it therefore not being able to upgrade/change my ROM. I have tried all possible was of doing this (modaco, theulucke). I have sat up till the break of dawn and i am going crazy as to why I cant. I'm on 3 and build no stars from 2.73**** and I am on Firmware 1.5.....PLEASE HELP ME
