HTC Hero ROM update on Orange now available

I installed and didnt bother with any backups - installation was seamless - then one fresh phone. I had backed up my contacts but have started fresh - no problems so far

I dont say it very often but well done Orange. Thank god for this forum - they called me and said there would be no update.. idiots

Did you manage to get this to work? I think slug was right crapped out dl. I downloaded it again from HTC and its fine.
Ive got the same phone and am getting the same error with both the Orange update, and the generic one. Any ideas?

Yes I second that, thankyou all forum members for the update and help.

Must say though, phone is bit faster and less lag on moving between home screens, but not massively so.
Still slight delay changing orientation and downloading stuff. Completely manageable though.
Love the Hero!

I've got the same problem, imported them back over to the phone using Mybackup and they show as google not phone contacts! Anyone got any ideas how to correct this please??

Found out it doesn't matter too much cause the contacts list still works the same i.e Facebook photos still link etc

I'm also getting the message 'android.process.acore' popping up and asking to force close, never had it before the update, any ideas??

Updated and installed fine using the HTC Europe site for the Orange update.

I must say I would be hesitant in recommending My BackUp as it "forgot" a few things and left some stray icons on the Sense UI...

Personally I invested the $3.99 (or something similar) for an app called MyBackup Pro - this will back up and restore everything on your phone. I highly recommend it.

Photo's and music will stay (as they are on the SD card if I recall correctly).
EVERYTHING else, and I mean everything, will get wiped: mms, sms, contacts, phone set up, home screens, phone and security settings, etc.
However the MyBackup Pro app will save most of that.
Although I did have a problem with some shortcuts I had on some home screens. Still no biggy to put them back though.

Hope that helps.

Problem is, HTC wont let me BUY apps for some reason, I cant get them, I have never managed to get past the stage of entering my card details :(

If a bought a Hero from orange today, would it already have the update on it, or would I have to install it myself?

The update was only released on Friday so you probably have older firmware.

Check:

Menu > Settings > About Phone and look to see if you have Build number 2.73.

I think you need a googlemail account with your shopping details set up. You can do this from the web site rather than from the phone.

Same here - only just noticed.
Really annoying actually. I'm going over deleting all the replicated ones. Can't seem to find a way of setting them to phone contacts again though.

I decided in the end to re-flash the ROM and start from scratch and set up my phone without using the restore function of Mybackup and so far so good, I no longer get android.process.acore errors!!
Also redone my contacts by reloading from sim so they are "phone" contacts. Once sorted I'll sync them with Outlook or googlemail and keep a finished copy there!!

So why doesn't MyBackup work properly? Would I be better off trying Sprite Backup?

I want to install the update to see if it fixes all the little problems (please God, I really want to like this phone and it *could* be so good!) but if I can't reinstall my contacts properly it's going to be a real pain the backside...

A 7 year old kid where I teach today spotted my Hero and said "my cousin's got one of those, he says it's the poor man's iPhone" Nice!

What does this mean for everyday usage?
In all honesty it didn't make any difference other than I couldn't then export them into Outlook (or at least i couldn't find a way!!). My main prob was that i was getting android.process.acore errors all the time. This has now all been sorted by a reflash and NOT using Mybackup!!

Solution to error 132 (probably) : Do not use any usb-mini cable, you need the cable you got in the box for your HTC Hero. (I think this is a Enhanced mini-USB)

If you notice, the cable looks a little bit different. The standard USB-mini plug looks like an isosceles trapezium, while the HTC Hero accepts and comes with a cable that looks like a Right-angled trapezium.

Post back if this solved your problem so we will know for sure.

This might seem like a stupid suggestion, but to all of those who have serial numbers which don't work: you are entering the S/N which is found under the battery, aren't you? I tried entering the number under the back cover (but not under the battery) first time round, since it starts HT, and it didn't work. Then I realized my mistake. Worked fine when I added the right thing in.

Also will you be given the opportunity to use a different GMail account when loading the new Rom for the first time?

Just upgraded my Hero, the whole process was as smooth as silk. Appreciable improvement in lag in opening applications.Hero Upgrade

I deleted all of my contacts which since using MyBackup had a Google tag on them. I re-synced with Outlook and brought all the contacts back from there and haven't had an Acore error yet. Fingers crossed...

Would just like to say thank you to all those who helped me with answering my questions, I did do the update last night - it was quick and easy - which is now what my phone is like too!!

People struggling to find a way to keep contacts, download Cyrket - Contact2Sim Pro - copy all your contacts to SIM card, there is a free version on the market. If it appears that the copy failed when you look at your PEOPLE, switch the phone off and back on again, and the copy will have registered in your PEOPLE app.

Thanks to everyone on this forum. downloaded from htc site last night and no problems with serial number (no need to register).

Google account remembers your app downloads so you just download again from marketplace. as for contacts, Google contacts are fine and do not need backup. For phone contacts I simply synced to outlook on my laptop first and then sync'd again after update - no problems!

Music etc. was fine because it was on sd card. So all in all everything went absolutely painlessly with no need for backup software (I did not mind re-apply my settings prefs which took about five minutes and was ok about losing sms's).

One thing to add to those who have used MyBackup.

Apps which are re-installed are no longer recognised by the Market - so if you look in My Downloads, they are not there. This means that you cannot download updates through the Market.
