Root HTC Hero rooted

Hi All.

I am new to all this so please bare with me, I don't even know if I have posted this in the correct place.

I have just purchased my first HTC Hero phone (ebay) which has been rooted (what ever that means!). The person I bought it from is asking me if I want a custom rom i.e. cronos/elelinux or in fact blank. This has gone right over my head. Any HELP would be greatly appreciated.

Hi All.

Welcome aboard! I've moved this to the appropriate HTC Hero section, where it will receive the best advice.

Firstly, a "rooted" handset allows full access to the file system(s) and lets you do almost anything you wish to the device. See here for a brief explanation.

The person I bought it from is asking me if I want a custom rom i.e. cronos/elelinux or in fact blank.

Both of those ROMs are based on the latest Android version for handsets, 2.3 a.k.a. Gingerbread, and do not use the HTC Sense UI overlay so will look and feel quite different to the stock Hero. However, if you don't like it then already having it rooted will allow you to change the ROM to another quite easily. I wouldn't suggest receiving it blank e.g. with no firmware as it will be difficult then to determine if there are any problems.

My advice would be, if youre new to android and the hero, get it with the stock HTC ROM on it. You may be perfectly happy with the stock HTC/Sense rom, and never feel the need to root or install a custom ROM.

But if, once youre familiar with the device and OS, you feel there is something extra you need from it, then it's a simple enough job to root it yourself and install a custom rom that does what you want it to do (and it really is quite simple, check the stickies in this forum, and feel free to ask if you need help).
