HTC Home Page

Hi,

First up, new to Android, so apologies for any NooB type questions / comments.

Ok, I just got a Samsung Captivate (although it says Galaxy S on the back and there seems to be a different forum for that?)

One of the things that I always thought looked pretty cool in the adverts for Android Phones turns out to be specific (I think) to HTC. Namely, the big digital clock gadget with the weather and the curved and minimal panel at the bottom of the screen with the fixed buttons on it. (Sorry, I don't know the correct term for this.)

Does anyone know if either (or both!) of these are available for download?

Failing this, is there any way I can change the buttons at the bottom so that they are no longer "phone"|"Email"|"Browser"|"Applications"?

Thanks in advance, folks!

I use beautiful widgets from the market. There is a free version, but I am using the pay. It is very customizable. There are many different clock/weather combos avaiblable.

I believe there are also other free clock/weather combos in the market. Just need to do a search.

Good luck.

As far as the curved bar at the bottom, there are ways to use other launchers than the touchwiz that comes with the captivate. Other popular launchers include launcher pro and ADW. I believe there is a way to modify the Launcher Pro doc to look like the sense dock.

If you are interested in different looks for your phone, you can check out the post your homescreen thread in the captivate forum for ideas. Also, check out the xda forums.

Another vote for Beautiful Widget. Very customizable and I found I liked it tons more than Fancy Widget.

+1 for Beautiful Widget

+1 for Launcher Pro Plus. I'm working on something that involves "blank images" as placeholders for my dock image...so yeah, the sky is the limit with docks.

The home screen/screenshot thread in this forum is pretty cool, but if you really want to open your mind to the possibilities of what you can do with the phone, check out the absolutely massive thread on XDA.

And yes, your phone is a Captivate, but its part of the Galaxy S family of phones. Welcome to the family! ;)

Welcome and to answer your 2nd question...

Press the app drawer button to display all of your apps
Press the menu button
Select view type and select Customizable grid
Press menu again and select Edit
Now you can press and hold on any icon to move it up or down
When done press menu and select save
Then to get thing back press menu one more time and select view type then Alphabetical grid

Or if you want to change things up, download and install launcher pro, my personal favorite

Thanks for the suggestions everyone - I'm having a great time loading, tying (and often then deleting!) various stuff.

j101399j - Your suggestion looked promising, but this only seemed to allow me to re-arrange the applications I see when I hit the Applications button? My issue is with the fixed 4 buttons at the bottom that don't move when you scroll home screens.

Currently, these are Phone, E-Mail, Browser and Applications. I want to replace Browser with Messaging since I do use text (a lot) but almost never surf the web on my phone!

I finally went with "Animated Weather" as a widget since this gave me the clock / weather look that I liked (and which looks a lot like the HTC one!)

Yes, once you select Customizable grid, press menu again and select Edit, Then press and hold on those buttons at the bottom and you can remove them.

The original Beautiful Widgets that included the flip clock was the subject of a 'Cease & Desist' notice from HTC and removed from distribution, so discussion of how to obtain it is not permitted for legal reasons.
