Root Htc one m8 stuck on boot screen

Thank you for getting back, it's REALLY nice to have someone interested in helping!

Right,

On my boot/boot loader screen it says in grey "tampered" and in pink "unlocked"

I have tried pretty much all the M8 5.0.1 downloads from graffixnyc.com and there is one which will load, I believe it's the one ending in LCC...

I have installed a custom recovery which is TWRP 2.7.0.2.

When I first got to the TWRP recovery I rather over enthusiastically followed the instructions from...

http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/install-an...ion-stock-rom-build-lrx22c-htc-one-m8-1479227

Which, by doing a factory reset, it seems I removed the OS. At that point (now realizing/learning you need an OS to SuperSu and Sunshine) the OS was removed :(

When I have had the 5.0.1 installed, the device wouldn't have any wifi access... I'm assuming that would be a firmware thing? So I got stuck in a catch 22... Couldn't do firmware update because I could load anything onto the drive through the OS, couldn't recover etc.

I did try Viper, through TWRP, luckily the zips fail so haven't really wrecked the phone... Yet!

I did get to the point last night of looking at an online support/recovery site in America where they remote in and sort the phone... Since sleeping on it I think that could be a bit desperate...

My CID I believe is HTC__001

I am on O2 in the UK (I'm guessing is need at some point to SuperCID the device?... Or is that too far off just now?)

Thanks again for your help !

Oh I also found the Hasoon2000 windows app... Tried flashing a boot image from the zip (5.0.1LCC from graffixnyc) and installing the zip via TWRP... That didn't work either lol...but I still have access to boot loader, and recovery...

If he's in the UK it will be Sense, unless he got someone to buy one for him in the States and ship it here. They don't sell GPE devices in the UK.
Thanks, I wasn't sure.

So that's probably not so good.

I can't lay out the steps here (time difference) but I think this is a case of the wrongly partitioned rom going onto a Sense phone - hopefully I'm wrong.

Flash Viper (KitKat, not Lollipop) then fastboot flash the boot image found by unzipping the Viper zip installation file - that's the basic fix I'd try first.

Yeah, its Sense. Wanted to install the GPE version if that was possible?
Yeah, it's possible but you have to go through a process to change your partitions from the Sense to the GPE layout.

:(

Personally, I don't think it's going to be worth the effort until this is fixed but that's just my opinion - http://phandroid.com/2014/12/29/android-50-lollipop-memory-leak-bug-marked-future-release/

Do try the Viper install fix if you can - I'll post back more later.

ahhhhh! Found something out.... As I am on a mac, and using Safari... the files unpack automatically. When using the system 'compress' the zip files don't work properly. Using Chrome instead... and the zips work using the recovery (TWRP...). I have used CyanogenMod (because it downloaded faster!) . So ... BOOM.... i have a working OS again!

Did EXACTLY what you said. Sooooo easy! I cant believe the speed it did it. No looking on Youtube, no extra tools or plugins.... lovely!

So... time to SuperCID and S Off??

Thank you for all your help so far guys! Im truly grateful!!!

So, I can't get either Android Revolution HD One M8 11.2 or 22.XX to install via zip. Nor can I get Insert Coin ROMs ... I tried finding 4.4.X versions (similar to the Cyanogen 11) but one will run... Sunshine doesn't play with Cyanogen it turns out.

I got Cyanogen working, installed SuperSu, and updated the binaries... then (whilst beaming with joy!) tried Sunshine... looking on forums the ROMs it works on have to be v close to HTC versions...

I have a copy of Firewater... would that work? Ive heard its closed down... but does that matter if i have the file?

It won't hurt to try Firewater, one of my M8s responded to it - I just wouldn't expect it given that you're on later firmware.

Pretty sure that Firewater wants a stock HTC rom and firmware very close to the early stuff - and even then there was no guarantee that it would work.

So - elaborate for me - what you mean, what happens, you know, when you report that you can't install rom XYZ (any of the above) via zip?

And are you pulling out and flashing the boot.img separately for each of those attempts?

Sense roms of the same version-generation use the same kernel, and just may have minor tweaks to change the overall boot.img (where the kernel lives along with other boot goodies).

CM has a different type of kernel altogether.

Sense roms need Sense boot.img files, CM roms need CM boot.img files - mixing the two almost certainly will cause bootloops or similar confused behaviors.

Im doing the zip first, but thats failing. Then doing the boot image...is that right? Or should I be doing boot.img first? Nothing is working at the moment :( The error looks like:

Installing: /storage/sdcard/ROM NAME HERE.zip
Finding Update Package...
Opening Update Package...
E: Can't open /storage/sdcard/ROM NAME...
(bad)
Installation aborted.
press any key to continue.

Does that make sense?

It sounds like you have bad zip images.

Are you familiar with your Terminal Window on OS X - getting around etc?

You want to go to where you've downloaded the rom zip before transferring to your M8 (from memory, I think that's just "cd Downloads" from a Terminal) and then saying:

md5 ROM-NAME-HERE.zip

At the rom download site, there will be an md5 value - compare to what you have after download.

Okay Im downloading Android Revolution 22.1 now... the check sum for that is ...

7AE409E147F977015F3B552B264C4B13

So I'll see if its the same through terminal check!

brb.

Yup, the others (all of them) are bad md5 numbers, all totally different to those online... how does that come about?
Any number of things can screw up a download. You never think about it when you can see pictures and watch youtubes but just a one or zero out of place on a rom download and you've got nothing.

And caps vs lowercase letters in the md5 don't matter - that's a hexidecimal (base-16) number (0-9,a-f).

Tried it with one new ROM, tested the md5 in my downloads folder (not moved) and then did the same test from the SD card. Totally different numbers....

could I adb push the zip to the phone, rather than put it onto the SD card? or is there any other method thats good?
adb push to sd card, copy via Android File Transfer on your Mac - should all be good.

I'd be questioning your usb cable right now - and also, very important - stay away from the USB 3 port if you've got one on your Mac.
