Help HTC Sync will not work at all - Help

Jacyn313

Newbie
Hey I signed up on these forums to seek help from anyone who might be knowledgeable in HTC/Android software. Here's my story I bought my EVO a little over a year ago, brought it home hooked it up to my PC and it worked like a charm even though sync 2.0.3 was ugly it worked. I upgraded when Sync 3.0 came out and even that worked just fine the few times I used it. I sync'd up my music files, pictures and movies then since I had all my stuff I didn't see the need to sync it daily so I didn't for about 3 months then I went to sync it up today and bam I get this error message - "HTC Sync has no response, please exit it and try again". Now I have scoured google, yahoo every damn search engine trying to find someone with a similiar error message and nothing. I even called customer service and the rep there said it was the first time anyone has ever called him and said something like that and that he had never heard of that error message. Here's what I did to try and remedy it (you know the typical things anyone would)
1. Attempted a repair installation of HTC Sync (failed)
2. Uninstall/re-install HTC Sync 3.0 (failed)
3. Uninstall 3.0/re-install stock 2.0 from SD (failed)
4. Tried all-the-above in safe mode (failed)
5. Uninstalled HTC Sync, Adobe Air, & HTC BMP USB drivers & attempted fresh install of everything (failed)
6. Called customer service (Epic Fail)

I'm seriously frustrated because like I said it had worked several times before when I would put songs and movies on my phone but now all of a sudden I get that weird error message that not even the all knowing google can direct me to an answer to fix. That leads me here. Hopefully someone might have a suggestion. Oh and I don't know if it matters or not but for the longest time I had been using my phone as a tether dont' know if that matters or not but before I ever did that it would sync just fine now HTC Sync won't start without that error message.

I forgot to mention this is a software related problem. HTC Sync won't even launch on my PC at all. Whenever I double click the launcher it shows the splash screen then that error message appears "Warning - HTC Sync has no response..." if I click sync now on the phone it does nothing and if I click sync now on the little phone icon in the task tray it does nothing as well all that shows when I click "HTC Sync" as my connection type is that my phone is connected but it won't actually let me use the damn sync to move albums, music or anything over to the phone. And I know I can mount the phone as a storage device open the folders and manually move them that way but that's just a freaking pain in the ass so I hope someone can help.

What version of Windows are you using? and what bit?

Generally when a program first starts to give me problems I shutdown the computer and give it a few minutes then reboot. A lot of times 7 out of 10 this solves my issues. Also Have you any other problems with other programs? maybe even minor or longer load ups? Could be time to run a full check disk, when was the last defrag done? All these things can lead to Software Issues. You can also try to uninstall the program again. Then use a program like glary utilities to remove orphaned registry settings then go to HTC and download the latest version (even if its the one you have) and try to run it again.

If that doesnt work you could always write a batch file to move the contents of the sdcard over to your hard drive.

Windows XP SP3 32bit. Like I said though Sync 3.0 HAD worked (doesn't now pos sync) on the few occasions I hooked my phone up to it. It's just for some reason it won't now. But I've tried restarting my computer but not a complete power down/up cycle so I mean it's worth a try. And I'll also give your other tips a try because like I said I've pretty much exhausted my ideas plus some of what you said was mirrored by an email I got from HTC so I'll give those a try and re-post any results.

Moderators you can close this thread (or keep it open so anyone who by chance has the same problem as me can find a solution) but I figured out my software issue and finally got sync to work. Turns out it was a combination of old iTunes files still on my system combined with the network drivers that get installed whenever you use a EVO as a wireless NIC card for a PC. Basically when I hooked my evo up to share the wifi in my house with my PC the drivers installed to allow it to do that somehow conflicted with some proxy settings in internet explorer. Basically I had to go into IE/Tools/Internet options/connections/lan settings click automatically detect settings to reset the IE (I don't know why I had to but yahoo messenger stopped working when I used the phone as a wifi nic as well and this fixed it). Then I wiped the drivers the EVO used as a NIC, uninstalled Adobe Air, HTC Driver installer, HTC sync restarted the system then did a fresh install and Sync was up and running again. Oh and I found through A LOT of internet snooping (and it was confirmed by HTC thru e-mail) that certain iTunes files cause driver conflictions which can cause sync to hang. I apologize for what seems to be rambling here but I was seriously dumbfounded and I'm a little happy I figured it out by dumb luck basically.

Hi Jacyn313, am getting same problem using HTC Wildfire, though I am able to browse through my folders. I want to sync contacts and calendar but am unable to. Have tried every damn thing and I dont use itunes. SO am not able to figure out the problem and the probable solution. Pls help.

So whenever you attempt to run Sync either from the start menu or desktop icon it tells you the exact same error I posted here? And if so have you ever used your wildfire as a wireless router (plugged it in and chose USB Tethering) I only ask because I'm trying to see if it's some sort of bug within the sync software because I can directly trace my Sync not working to when I started using it as a wireless router because of the drivers it installs to do so on my pc. Anyways I can guide you through everything I recently did to make my Sync work and hopefully it works for you.
1. Download the latest version of HTC Sync for your handset from the HTC website (you don't have to do this first but it saves time in the process)

2. Uninstall everything HTC related through the control panel Start<Control panel< Add/remove programs;
- HTC BMP USB driver
- HTC sync
- Adobe Air

3. After they're all uninstalled go to C:/program files (or C:/program files_x86) and delete the HTC folder within. (I'm not sure if it can cause a corrupt install since most files/drivers SHOULD be overwritten upon a new install but it never hurts to help)

4. go start<run<msconfig click "selective startup" and leave all boxes checked. Navigate to Services and click "Disable all" don't worry it won't cause windows to crash it'll just make your pc start up A LOT faster because it won't have as many processes to run upon start-up and it should deactivate your anti-virus (plus any firewalls). Follow the prompt to restart your pc.

5. Now attempt a fresh install using the file downloaded from HTC. Once installed return msconfig file to normal "Start<run<msconfig< Normal Startup" follow prompts to restart and it SHOULD work for you. That's exactly what I did step by step with the exception of changing a few settings in Internet Explorer but I think it's HIGHLY unlikely that IE can in any way shape or form affect the Sync software that was just a bug I found. Anyways post back let me know if any of that helped you.

Side note - I know you said you don't have iTunes that's what was blowing me about that file because I uninstalled iTunes when I bought my evo over a year ago but it still had a couple registry keys, some files AND that Library.xml file left on my computer somehow. I'm fairly certain Library.xml is used predominately (if not entirely) by iTunes but it never hurts to check and make sure you don't have any itunes bones in your pc closet lol.

i sync every couple of days because we use the phone as our camera and camcorder. we then put the videos on the ipad to share with people. worked great until last weekend. itunes updated stuff, mostly related to their new ipad3 pos. now plugging in the phone says unknown usb device.

i will go through services, uninstall itunes and let you know if my theories are right. but look in your event logs and see if there are any errors popping up when you plug in the phone.

Hi..I have just joined the forum especially to report new behaviour on this problem...

I am getting the very same symptom on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit and the cause of problem is different...It is simply Windows permissions !!

I have created a user profile for myself on the OS. This user profile is an administrator but even then faces this issue with HTC Sync.
BUT, the moment I log out and log in as the default Windows Administrator ...voila !! HTC Sync works like a charm.

Through some troubleshooting I have come to observe that the problem is because the OS (perhaps User Access Control) does not allow the Adobe Air executable to launch and interact with the system. This being the base of HTC Sync probably causes the application to fail.

I am presently trying to solve this. Will update if I find a way out.

But of course, if anyone has already found a way out they are welcome to post the solution here and save my time :)

Sync wouldn't work. Uninstalled all HTC Software in "Programs and Features"
Used Advanced System Care to clean the registry. Restarted the computer. Reinstalled latest HTC Sync. It worked right away.
