HTC to Motorola

Hiya,
I'm looking at the X and the Inc from Verizon. I have an Eris now and love the HTC system, but unfamiliar with the Motorola. Has anyone switched and can tell me any good or bad points? Like I heard the Motorola isn't as customizable as the Inc. Thanks,

P.S I'm a newbie so sorry if this is a "da" question...
 
I had the Eris(complete piece of crap by the way, i hope to god your experience with it was better than mine) but i am absolutely IN LOVE with my DX. The system is a little bit different and the HTC sense is better than motoblur but i wouldnt trade my Droid X for any HTC phone right now(EVO included). Get the Droid X and dont think twice about it.


My main thought process after my eris was to get out of HTC because of how bad of an experience it was. I understand HTC has probably come a LONG way since the Eris and i have fooled around with the Incredible and its pretty good, but the DX is just the posterboy for Droid perfection. Enjoy.
 
I played with my buddies Eris last week trying to root it and ROM it. I must say that was the first time I've really gotten around on a Sense device and personally, I don't see what the big deal is about 'Sense UI' after doing so. Honestly I don't really see the huge differences between blur, sense, touchwize or vanilla to tell you the truth. Oh sure there are differences, but they are all paths that lead to the same place anyway. It's just like changing launchers, it's just a different overall feel. But beyond that they are all very Android... there's no escaping that!

So to stay with HTC for sense, or Motorola for blur seems rather trite if you ask me. But to each his own. I certainly don't have anything against HTC devices, infact I quite like the look of them. I also like the look of Motorola devices. I don't like the look of Samsung devices (just thought I'd throw that one in there). Motorola holds two advantages IMO... one, they use metal frames (or at least they have... seems the Bionic will be all plastic. What a pity). And two, they use Gorilla Glass. A good friend of mine just had an accident with his EVO 4G. It fell off of his couch onto the tile floor and shattered the glass screen. This was a 2 foot drop at best, ridiculous that such a short drop would result in such carnage. That was shocking to me.

That's not to say that you CAN't break the DX's Gorilla Glass screen. But I assure you it would have held up to that fall 100 times better than his EVO did. I've dropped mine onto a concrete patio without a scratch to show for it. Not that I make it a habit of skipping my phone down the sidewalk or anything, but it's nice to know if you have an accident such as this, you're much better off with the Gorilla Glass screen and metal frame than without.

The HTC also has an advantage, no locked bootloader. If you're into rooting and ROMing your device, this could play a role in your decision. While you can easily root and ROM the DX, or any other Moto phone, the ROMs aren't completely custom, they have to work around the kernel as it can not be replaced with another. If you don't ROM then this might all be Greek to you. But I know there is a strong mod community in the Eris family, so I thought maybe you were into that some what.

Which is the bigger advantage? Well only you can tell us that. It's all about the priorities. Which is your biggest?

Are you planning on rooting your next phone? If the answer is no, then get the Droid X - it's big and powerful, and an excellent phone. If the answer is yes, then get the Dinc. - it's easier to root, and there's a greater range of roms and themes available for it.

I just made the switch from Eris to X yesterday. My Eris was rooted, so maybe this is not a fair comparison, but so far I am loving the X. It is waaay faster, and obviously the display is larger and crisper. I do miss some of the customization of the rooted phone, but I am not ready to root this one yet.
 
Don't fret Trumpup, rooting is so easy on the DX a caveman could do it. Find the Z4Root apk (it's not on the market any longer) and instal it. Then you can very simply 1 click root it, and 1 click unroot it as well.

No need to go without the added customization you spoke of. Quit being a sadomasochistic already would ya.

I came from the Eris. The main thing I missed when I went to the X was the stock text/messaging app was better on the Eris than the DX. But I just installed Handcent and went on my merry way. And if you like the HTC time/weather widget...Beautiful Widgets is just as good, plus it's customizable. People are making new skins for it all the time.

Personally, I think the Motorola Blur Widgets that come with the phone are uglier than a AV geek's prom date. But there are enough free and cheap widgets in the market to keep me happy.

My Eris got laggy after 6 months. My X will get laggy occasionally, but a reboot fixes that right up, and it's NEVER as bad as the Eris was. Note: That was when I was on the stock ROM, now that I'm running a custom ROM (ApeX 1.3.1) I've had NO lag.

You'll LOVE the larger screen. Much easier to click links than on the Eris, and reading in much better, of course.

You'll also love the 8Gb internal memory for app storage. I was constantly having to remove apps to install new apps on the Eris. I had close to 200 apps on my X at one point, and still had 6Gb free space internal. And she never slowed down.
 
I have had thorough use with HTC Touch Pro, Imagio, Moto Droid, HTC Incredible, and Moto Droid X. I've noticed a fairly consistent trend, and based on my experience(s).

HTC has lower quality phones than Moto (though still not bad), and significantly worse radio antennas than Moto phones.
I think HTC generally has nicer looking phones though. However, one thing to take into consideration is that Moto probably won't have open bootloaders anymore, where as HTC (hopefully) will.

The last part is enough in my opinion to stay away from Moto (again, assuming it's true that they will continue to have locked bootloaders).

This very thing here may mean my next phone will be an HTC. I agree that HTC designs are very nice to look at, and they feel nice in your hand as well. The thing I would like to see them implement is Gorilla Glass screens (such a huge improvement over their current screens), and they need to use bigger batteries than what they use now (although this could also be said for Moto).

More than anything I'm hoping Google releases a Nexus with a 4.3 or bigger screen and said Gorilla Glass screen as well. Since I'm always bitching about all the bloat and not being able to truly customize my device I figure I should put my money where my mouth is and buy the phone that is basically built for guys like moi in mind.

It's just that, to date the Nexus haven't exactly blown my socks off.

You know, the idea of a Nexus with a 4.3 screen is rather exciting. The only drawback, from my perspective is that the Nexus has never been available on Verizon - and probably never will. So, it's just a dream...

After a couple of weeks with the Droid X, there is no looking back. I have rooted for wireless tether, but am still using the stock ROM. Battery life is incredible, the speed is blinding, and I am loving the huge screen. The one small gripe that I have is that I cannot figure out how to customize the phone and contact buttons on either side of the launcher button. All said, I am thrilled with my new phone (and I snuck in right under the wire to get the $132 in trade-in for my Eris).
 
I hear ya Trumpup, my wife went from an Eris to a Fascinate and loves her new, powerful device. Even at 700+mhz overclocked, the little Eris was underpowered lol.

We got the $132 trade-in for it as well. :)

Try out Launcher Pro, ADW, or Go Launcher for scrollable bottom docks and other cool features. If you do decide to permanently use the alternate launcher, make sure you clear all widgets and app icons off your stock homescreens because the stock launcher will continue to "run" in the background, so you don't want the widgets taking up valuable system resources and draining your battery.

Try a launcher called LiveHome, free from Android Market. It's highly customizable and has some interesting "effects" for flipping pages. I have it on all three of my Droid phones & really like it.

Launcher Pro Plus and ADW EX also have "interesting" animations between homescreen transitions.
