HTC Unlocks the Incredible 2

I was not able to find any information on what exactly HTC's unlock process does. I would assume it would leave you at Hboot 0.98
 
reading the FAQ it appears to do just as it says.......... unlocks the bootloader.......meaning you can flash recoveries/roms/etc.......... it does leave the phone at S-on meaning you cannot change radios

since we already have root on this device this really isnt that big of a deal from that standpoint.

however the fact that rooting and flashing no longer voids the warranty is great news

I would think that if you used Revolutionary to gain S-Off your warranty would still be void. I think you will have to use HTC's unlock process to not void your warranty.

This looks really interesting to me, and quite easy.
Hmm... I have no desire to change radios after this last update, this could be what I have been waiting for.
I will read all I can about this...

well perhaps some of the devs can weigh in on this...... since I must confess Im not that knowledgeable when it comes to the specifics of such things

my thought process however says that if we still have S-on doesnt that prevent superuser access?

which would mean that 99% of the reason for rooting would be nullified.... after all you still couldnt use a lot of the apps or features that rooting provides you with.... considering most of these features require SU
 
The way I'm reading the FAQ section it sounds like you will still be able to change everything except the radio.

"After you have unlocked the bootloader, however, you will have lifted the restrictions on boot, recovery and system. This means you can customize boot, recovery and system images on your phone as you desire."
 
" Please understand that you will not be able to return your device to the original state and going forward your device may not be held covered under the warranty for all claims resulting from the unlocking of the bootloader. HTC bears no responsibility if your device is no longer usable afterwards."
 
I am getting kinda confused as to exactly what this does. Yeah, i probably could sit down right now and install sdk and go through hTC's little 5 step process and successfully unlock my bootloader, but then what?
Just unlocking the bootloader is not rooting.
What do I do to achieve root after this?
Given I will need SU the busybox thing?
Is not the first thing you need to do after achieving root is made a backup with titanium or nand?
And you need SU for that right?
HTC's methods seem hafass.
 
Which presents the problem..... S-on locks access to the NAND portions..... Cant nandroid without S-off afaik
 
Yes... I believe thats correct.... but my understanding is its just an overlay type deal.... not a true replacement

Also without access to NAND (even w/ workaround) its impossible to create a 'nandroid' backup

I of course may be understanding it wrongly..... But this would make their tool far less useful than dev root.....

The one upside to the tool... as mentioned.... they can no longer deny warranty on face value of being rooted as before
 
I give up again! My phone is working perfectly fine right now & since the last update signal strength has improved & overall performance of the interworkings of the UI seem solid/stable.
I am not going to start messing around with a bunch of stuff I know nothing about that will cause me problems and probably leave me without a phone for when I need to call someone.
Plus I have no machine to run all this stuff on.
I will stay with my warrantied free phone from VZW and get a new one in two years.

That's that. ;)

As I said I may be understanding it wrongly.........but nothing on XDA disputes me from what Ive read....... sure you can overlay a rom on the current sys files.............. we did that already with temp root 6 months ago....... that doesnt change anything or facts............. S-on is S-on................and theres nothing you can do to get past that with this tool............of course if this tool allows you to easily achieve S-off thats a different story............

but to this date there is NOBODY who has achieved absolute root with S-on on any device............ PERIOD................ simply because by definition its not possible

My thinking exactly!
The way back I have rooted my old Eris and put XtrSense ROM on it plus a few other things. As a result, the phone run much smoother, better.

This time I see no reason to root (yet), but the contrary: I might loose GSM capability as a result. (No confirmed reliable GSM on the Dinc2 ROMs yet)
Bloatware does not bother me that much. Rooting and new ROMs would not help me with things I would really like to have, for instance, a physical camera shutter button.

NOw ICS (with no bugs) would be a differebt story...

theres at least a couple roms that have physical camera buttons..... the one IM using lets you select the volume rockers as the camera shutter button

Use hTC's little super tool follow their 5 step process to gain the token and input it in your phone to unlock your bootloader; follow their instructions carefully...

In order to obtain the token make copies of adb (Android debug bridge) and fastboot. Then put them in the android folder that hTC will ask you to create. Open up the command prompt, & navigate to the android folder on your C: drive.
Type in the fastboot oem command hTC will tell you to. Get the token and type it exactly over and hTC will email you bootloader unlock key. Do not copy the INFO or (bootloader) prefix, or the process will not register properly.

Now to obtain root. You will have to do all this using the fastboot method & command prompts then reboot in to fastboot to do your first backup image...

Download Clockwork mod Recovery & Superuser. (from the market or wherever you like) Then save it to your fastboot folder so you can find the file path later. Usually: \android-sdk-windows\tools\
Flash clockwork recovery while in fastboot. Then from recovery you will be able to flash superuser, this will give you root.

You will now be rooted with S-on... I don't think you can flash radios or kernels like this with security on...
Now, you are all set to find a custom ROM to flash. (probably some will work, some will not using this method)

I hope this gives someone a push in the right direction that was able to unlock the bootloader & was like now what...
I am beginning to think that the hTC super tool & this hTC Dev .com unlock bootloader thing are two totally different like unrelated things... Weird, I just came to that realization... Oh, well just thought I would throw that in there.
