Root HTCDev unlock without custom recovery?

Mr. Boom

I searched, but didn't find my answer. Can i use the HTCdev unlock, and NOT use a custom recovery? I only want SU for a backup app, and one or two other root apps that will not alter the system. I already have SU on my card.

Yes..I unlocked and rooted just to debloat when I first unlocked my phone.

Ok, i am confused a bit now. I thought the HTCdev method is a root method. If it isn't, then why unlock first, if you still have to root? Doesn't the root unlock it?

Geez, the Inc was much easier than this!

Cuz you can't root this phone without the bootloader being unlocked unfortunately. So if you want to keep the stock recovery, you can just temp flash a custom recovery and then use it to flash su. Then after reboot, you'll be rooted but with the stock recovery.

This is a great thread to get a handle on the root options you have available. I hear you tho, oh for the good old days of Unrevoked. One click for root and s-off. Good times.

the concept of "root via recovery" has been around for a long time, since the OG droid first came out with an unlocked bootloader.

basic steps:
-unlock phone
-install(temp or permanent) a custom recovery
-use custom recovery to install superuser app and files

back in the older days, however, the first step was usually acieved with an xtc clip,or some sort of software hack/trickery to get the phone "s-off". now we just use htcdev unlock tools to unlock the bootloader, until something better comes along ;)

read thru the thread iowa linked... post up if you have any questions on it after :)

Thanks fellas. All i am really after right now is to have root access with stock recovery. I still want to get the OTAs. for now!
