HTML5 Preview video

No, it just makes flash look far superior and makes HTML 5 look like a Fisher Price toy like all of Apple's other products and ideas.
 
HTML5 is great for video streaming, but there are other applications where it just can't replace Flash. Also, Flash has already been proven to out perform HTML5 on the Nexus One and iPhone 3gs. That being said, HTML5 isn't even slated to be finished completely until around 2022...so there is a lot more room for optimization. It's not ready for prime time yet though, IMO.

YouTube has an HTML5 testing option that I tried...it was okay but a little too buggy so I switched back to Flash.

It's estimated that HTML5 won't be W3C recommended until 2022...it may be done before then but there are still a lot of pieces that work hasn't even been started on yet. It's been in the works since 2004 and so far there isn't much of HTML5 that is usable.

True, but several companies have already started work on HTML5 for the iPad including CBS.com. Also, companies like BrightCove and others that will take Flash content and covert it to HTML5 to play on an iPad in real time. Will only be a mater of time before its up and running.

Yeah, some of the basic features such as video streaming are pretty much ready. I'm just stating that it's going to be quite a while before it's fully completed and even longer before it's widely adopted.

Correct. Companies are seeing how well the iPad is selling want some of the action (revenue) and are starting to figure out how to get their content on the iPad. So the whole "it doesnt play flash" argument really wont matter by next year. Companies like CBS will either offer direct viewing of their content or a third party like Brightcove will make some kind of emulator that converts flash to HTML5 for the iPad :)
 
Eh, I don't doubt that it will see a lot of action and replace Flash in many instances but it's still by no means a total Flash replacement. Flash can do soooo many things that I just don't see being incorporated into HTML...ever. Well...maybe HTML20 or something :P but by then Flash will probably be on Flash 22 and have a shit load of new features. Also, it's much harder to update the HTML5 standard once it's done which gives Flash another step-up because all they have to do is put out a new version. Once HTML5 is standardized...it's pretty much set in stone.
 
Problem is html5 will never be a flash killer or replacement. Do you know that thousands, to millions of websites have adapted to flash and are so dependant on it? Flash is also progressing. Flash even has hardware acceleration, and not just software.

Well, it only takes care of the video playing issue. There are still a lot of other places that Flash is used.

HTML5 will not take over Flash. Now Silverlight, that is an awesome thing. But if you see comparisons between HTML5 and Flash 10.1, you will see how much more efficient Flash is.

Google are FULLY BEHIND open standards, especially HTML5. The problem with a device NOT supporting Flash is that many websites cannot make the switch so easily. That is why Full Flash support is still VERY VERY important in todays web.

MBell, you know this, what I have just said, as fact. Google loves open standards, thats whats so great about them. Apple on the other hand, as a rule, prefer to keep control of EVERYTHING. Thus the reason they do not support flash.


I know you love your iPad, and thats perfectly fine. But you must agree, even if only to give substance to your other points of view, that not supporting flash is bad for Apples consumers.

Just have a think about it. Yes I am sort of attacking Apple for this, and even as some who loves Apple products, you must agree. Anything short of this is extremely fanboyish. Its ok to love a product, and still admit it has downfalls.

Anyways.... why do you come to an Android forum site just to basically talk about Apple? It seems as though all you really want to talk about is Apple here. I hope you know how annoying it can be. It's like if I went to an Apple forum site and all I wanted to do is make posts about Google, bash anything that Apple, and defend Google til death. Perhaps you have developed an addicton? Get some sort of high? Feel empowered? I'm just curious.

Sure, the lack of flash will effect SOME people, not the vast majority. I bet most people who buy the iPad wouldnt even know what flash is to begin with. It doesnt bother me because I dont regularly visit sites with lots of flash. I do watch TV shows on my iPad, so Hulu is out. However, ABC already has an app I have downloaded where I can watch all their shows and CBS and NBC should have theirs out shortly, so I am good. I could always just get it for a buck in the itunes store anyways if I really wanted it.

So while I agree that the lack of flash will effect some people, most wont care and its Apple's product, they have the right to build it how they wish. Just as we as consumers have the right to not buy it if we wish. I think its safe to say from the all the iPads already sold, the majority really dont mind it doesnt support flash.
 
I think it's safe to say that most people will really just buy anything that Apple creates because it's new and it's from Apple, even though it's something that they really don't need.

The lack of flash will just bother people whenever they come across a little blue lego.
