Help I bricked it

Er.. not to be mean.. but, I'm getting a little frusterated here.

I am 99% sure I am 100% bricked.

when I press the power button, the lights don't even turn on in the phone :/

I read one thread saying if the phone doesn't even turn on these method won't work.

I guess the possible upside to all of that is if the phone doesn't turn on at all.. then maybe I can get it replaced.

As I may have mentioned, the problem you're having is the exact same problem I had with my 2nd Cappy. It wouldn't power on, wouldn't show the charge icon, NOTHING.

I tried the tape jig on it and never did get any response. I wasn't sure if I was not touching the correct pins or perhaps the phone was seriously bricked. I wound up exchanging it - BUT - After doing a lot of reading on the issue since, evidence would suggest that a jig will work. That's why I've been suggesting hacking your cable. Aside from a purpose built jig, hacking the cable is the closest way to ensure you're touching the correct pins on the phone.

Again, I wasn't able to get mine back on, but I didn't have a real jig at the time, so who knows.

I've read up quite a bit on it and I am debating.. Unfortunately everything I am reading suggest that when the phone is bricked the way mine is.. it won't be fixed.

Out of curiosity when you exchanged yours were you within your 30 days?

Yup - Didn't have any problem...

I am not in my 30 days so I am kinda worried...

I mean accidents happen to everyone sooner or later... my computer shutting down was a freak accident..

I guess given circumstances I shouldn't worry too much..

A. Captivate has been for all intents and purposes a flawed release.
B. Even though I was rooted.. how much effort are they going to put into proving I was rooted when the phone doesn't turn on or respond to usb at all? I am guessing the internal memory is soldered in so they would have to find a way to get the chip off and examine it.
C. my phone is in perfect condition.

I disagree there - Aside from GPS, this phone is way more powerful and capable than phones of similar vintage. I'm not inclined to give up on it quite yet. Especially considering that the Atrix/Inspire etc are still quite new and we've not heard what kind of problems/bugs they do have.... yet.

I don't think you need to worry about it - AT&T isn't going to go into in depth repair on it. Samsung may try, but at that point, you'll already have got your new phone and it'll be boo on AT&T.

Oh no don't mistake me.

I absolutely love my captivate and will get another in a heartbeat.

What I mean to say is from day one there was lag and GPS issues.. and a lot of customers making a fuss over it.

Which probably works in my advantage to get it switched out.

And that is sort of what I meant.. At&t people are probably going to physically inspect hardware and check for water damage/abuse to the phone itself.

When they don't find anything..I doubt even samsung is going to go out of their way to fix it..

the phone is 600$ or so full price.

Well how much do you have to pay someone to fix it? I imagine the techs who would try to fix them either A. aren't cheap and not going to spend a lot of time fixing it because time is money.

Or b. are cheap and not as highly trained.. therefore going to be unable to fix it.

I mean if it doesn't respond to usb.. there isn't a whole lot that can really be done to my knowledge since last I checked with phones, everything is soldered in.

Unlike computers where it is cost effective to repair a 600$ computer and requires relatively little training to swap out parts/run antivirus software.. and you can after a decent amount of training do this incredibly quickly..

With these phones, you not only need to know hardware/software but, soldering and probably a lot more to really fix anything. You can't just say "well lets switch out the hard drive" you would need to unsolder internal storage ect ect.

ok this is the rundown of the past 24 hours with my captivate. I had cognition 3.04 installed on my captivate... Like a idiot I tried to delete launcher pro. It caused the home settings on the phone to go completely black and i was unable to see anything. So I decided to flash back to my original stock rom since I had backed it up. It didn't work and the phone was still in the same state. So I used Odin to flash back to stock. It eventually worked. I was all set until I tried to download the new froyo update from At&T. I did but it disconnected itself in the middle of the download, and messed up the phone. Thats why I was saying I had the sign with the phone, exclamation mark and the computer. Well I kept trying the download and putting my phone in download mode. Finally it worked and I now I have stock At&t froyo ROM on my captivate. It's also rooted. Now I don't have any technical problems per say but now whenever I try to reflash cognition it doesn't work. It fails. I also formatted the sd card and after that when I connect the phone to the computer it doesnt show the internal sd card . I just decided to make a file called sd/ how it originally was. I did a lot of researching when I encountered these problems, so thanks android forums and xda developers.:D

Update.

Took my captivate to the store I bought it from.

Lady said it was out of the 30 days nothing she could do but, there is a local store that handles my exact situation.

My step dad took it there next day came home with new captivate.

Although they are mailing us a new battery.

Apparently the battery and phone were both fried somehow.

Glad to hear ya got it taken care of. What is the batch # of your new phone (near the S/N on the back, under the battery)?

I think your original problem (and mine; same issue) was due to using ODIN-1-CLICK on a batch 1010 or 1012 phone. The trick is to ONLY use ODIN3 (NOT 1-CLICK) with the 1010/1012 phones. So far, I've flashed my 1012 phone this way at least 6 times and everything has worked fine.

[PROGRAM] AIO Captivate Toolbox 3.0 NOW LIVE *Smaller, Faster, + More Automation* - xda-developers

The above is a GREAT program/toolbox for flashing phones. It includes both ODINs and will allow you to flash, root, flash customs, all in one place.

The other thing that I've become semi familiar with is "ADB". If you're not familiar with it do some research on it. You can get ADB with the SDK Tools for Android - Basically what I use it for is to VERIFY communication between the phone and the computer, prior to using ODIN3. This will help to ensure that things are getting started off correctly.

The last thing I *****HIGHLY***** recommend is spending the $10 on a jig. I did a flash to stock today and it had some partition problems and I had to use the jig to get back to Download Mode. As far as I'm concerned - If you flash at all, you need one - for $10, buy one now and have it on hand for later.

Anyway, glad to see you got another one - Hopefully your first experience will not discourage you from flashing ROMs. I was hesitant at first for fear that my phone would go 'dead' again, but using the above techniques has really proved itself as reliable to me.

Any questions, just ask.
