Help I Can't Update... Help?

Carador

Newbie
I know this was mentioned before but there was no solution to the problem. Since last Thursday every time I check for new software available I get the traditional message stating it's checking for new software available; but instead of saying "no new software found" the message just disappears! And even now I still haven't been able to update my TBolt. =/
Is there any fix?

Not that I've found yet. HTC had me do a factory reset which didn't work, then told me it was normal for this to happen. I told them I have had my phone had checked for updates normally for the 4 months I've had it and not checked for about 4 days, so this is not normal. Do not let them talk you into doing a factory reset because it didn't do anything for mine except give me the opportunity to spend the day putting my phone back the way was before I did the reset.

Glad to hear that I'm not the only one having this issue!

I have been checking for an OTA update every day since the end of June, because I suffer from the reboot bug and am anxious to get the fix ASAP. Some time last week it stopped saying "No New Software Update Available" and just exits like what you described.

On Friday when the OTA fix was released, I got so frustrated that I couldn't get the update that I tried a factory reset on my phone. That didn't work. Then things got worse, because after the reset, Android Market was unable to download any app. Every time it would say "Download was Unsuccessful".

I tried factor reset 2 or 3 more times. I tried formatting my SD card. I tried taking the SIM card out. On Saturday I took it to the Verizon store & they said they've never seen this before, and ordered me a like-new replacement that's supposed to come next week.

In the meantime, this morning I was suddenly able to download Market apps again! Now if I can just get the OTA to work, I may not need this refurb phone they're sending me. Unless it has newer hardware or something... I am thinking I will keep my phone as long as I can figure this out.

I found another forum post where some folks had a similar issue:

Software update not working...? - Android Forums

One person there said they got the refurb phone, put their SIM in and the OTA worked right away. Then, out of curiosity, they put the SIM back into their original phone and the OTA worked that time too. It sounds like this has something to do with Verizon's OTA servers rather than the phone itself....

Just give it some time people. I am sure after a majority of the people gets their phone updated. Then the ota should work more smoothly. What happens when you overload a system? Think about that.

They told me that the update is going out randomly and it goes out by a lottery using your simm card serial number. He also said that it may take a week or so as the updates are going out to three to four thousand at a time. So I guess we must be be patient.

Everything you just said and then some.

That makes sense. I guess it doesn't give the usual "No New Update is Available" message because, there is an update, just not for me (yet).

If that's how it works, Verizon employees should really get trained to recognize this. I've heard about a number of people getting replacement phones due to confusion over this, myself included.

Now I have a replacement coming in the mail and will have to decide: do I keep my original phone since nothing is likely wrong with it, or keep the "certified like-new" replacement. Guess I will try them both out and then decide... anyone have any arguments for keeping my original phone? I've read mixed opinions about how "new" these CLN phones are...

You would think given the previous update fiasco that they would monitor the lottery system to be able to determine if newly patched phones are later identified with "issues persist" or at least some way to measure success rather than by some possibly random order.

I have the reboot issues and it didn't bother me until it started rebooting during phone calls. Now I'm pissed and I want it fixed. If they could just tell me when I'll get it, no worries. But to experience the same behavior as others with the update message disappearing and the phone subsequently rebooting...wtf?!

I started a thread about this issue in the Verizon forum. Right now, no one has a fix, or seems to know if it's even a problem that needs to be fixed. Just a lot of people who started having the same thing happen at the same time with no warning and no communication about why or what it means. None of the techs at HTC and Verizon have any idea what I'm talking about and I'm trying not to get too upset because HTC and Verizon don't even seem to communicate with their own employees, let alone the people who pay them a nice chunk of change every month. I can be fairly calm about it because my phone works fine, even after the first update, so I don't need the update to fix any problems.

I was told by a Verizon tech that when it gets pushed to my phone, an Android icon will appear in my status bar. I just hope that if, or when that happens, I'll have some way to accept the download.

I wouldn't give up my original new phone for a CLN replacement without trying the fixes first. Of course mine has been cased, screen protected and pampered for the last 4 months, but I don't know what shape yours is in. If you've dropped it a few times, or the screen is scratched up, you might be better off with the replacement.

After many failed attempts at downloading the update, I tried the method of removing the battery cover (to lose 3G service and use 1X). It worked for me the very first time. Some say that it doesn't work, but it did for me. Maybe worth a shot at least.

I'm in the same boat. I dont get too many random restarts, but the GPS is sometimes slow. Ive heard tomorrow is the official update release to everyone, so I'll just wait

I have been having the same issue with the disappearing window. Seems like no one has been able to successfully resolve it. I wish my phone would just update like its supposed to.

This phone is really driving me crazy. When i try to update my phone also says checking for update and then just disappears. I tried the 1x update method and the back removed method. i really dont want to reset if that isnt a confirmed solution which it sounds like it doesnt work. HTC and Verizon have really messed up with this phone I just want it right

Verizon should really train some their employees better. Don't get me wrong, some have been really helpful, but today I had one of the rudest reps help me at an NYC store. Actually I shouldn't say "help."

Question...and I'm not sure anyone on here will have the answer, but i'll float it anyway... My TB never got the last update that caused all the reboots. I have never had a reboot on the phone. My only complaints are that the gps takes 5 minutes to lock and I drop my data connection a lot when switching from 3g to 4G areas and it takes a few minutes to come back. Other than that, no problems. My question is will i get this new update, since I never got the last one? Or is everyone supposed to get this update? Frankly I could care less because I have been using the mobile hotspot and have been doing so since it was supposed to end on july 6th. I would rather just wait for GB if that's the case. The gps locking quicker would be nice though...

New TB coming. They're paying for the overnight shipping, tho they tried to charge me 7 bucks at first. They did the reset bit even tho I explained it was a waste of time. I'll see how the new or refurb phone works.

I have the same problem with gps....I downloaded an app called "gps fix" and its helped tremendously. First time u run it, give it a few mins to "fix", then afterwards it should increase ur gps whenever u use it.

I read the PDF on the update and I've tried using WiFi to update, but whenever I do the "check new" it turns on the 4G radio to check.

Not being able to get this update is really pissing me off!

I contacted HTC about the disappearing update dialog and this was there response:

"I understand you are unable to update your Thunderbolt with the latest update. Have you received the notification on your Thunderbolt alerting you of the update? If you have not, you will need to wait for this notification. When updates are pushed, they are sent out in waves. It generally takes up to 3 weeks since initial release for all users to receive the notification. If you do not receive the notification in about 2 1/2 weeks then contact us again and we will look further into this for you."

I have a feeling I will be contacting them again in 2 1/2 weeks......

Funny thing is, back when the MR1 update came out, as soon as I saw people posting about downloading it, I was able to press "Check new" and get the update right away. A few weeks after I did that, I think my phone actually did notify me that new software was available; I assumed it was a NEW update, but when it looked for updates after giving me the notification, it said I was up to date, so I just assumed they were a bit late with giving me a notification on it.

Prior to this past Friday, I had been pressing "Check new" on an almost daily basis, because I wasn't keeping up too well with these forums, and I was hoping it'd be released. Any time I checked, it'd return with a message that no new software was found. Then Friday rolls around, and my update box just disappears before it alerts me whether it found new software or not. It's been like this ever since. :/

Well my wife's TB let me update it right away and hers is newer than mine by a few weeks so that lottery thing doesnt make sense. I just want this rebooting piece of sh@t fixed. All was good before the last update except for gps speed

I noticed on mine in the notifications that "Software Update" was running so I rebooted and it was not there. I then did a "check new" and after the dialog went awy the "software Update" was still running.

I'm not sure if this is normal behavior or if it's still trying to do something. (I never noticed the behavior before I stopped getting the notification of "no new updates available")
