I consider myself a "dumbass" at times.....

Rooting was easy as cake before 2.1 went OTA. Now it's a little more involved (requires rsdlite and other tools) but if you can follow instructions you should be fine.
 
I have been thinking about rooting for a few weeks now and after going through this thread and doing alot more reading on the forum about different Roms i decided to do it. Took alittle over an hour to root and reload all my stuff. And before the night started i couldn't have told you the difference between a root, a rom, or a theme so you know it has to be that easy. I am so glad i did it too. I followed the video's on droidlife and no issues at all. Follow the instructions and just replace your rom with theirs(saphire)

Yeah, but I fell victim to GottaHaveItNow syndrome. I decided that restoring from the backup was going to be a lot faster than waiting for the system to download. And I wanted to start messing with it RIGHT THAT VERY MILLISECOND!!!!!!!

Cool. Thanks for the tip, I'll check it out. Being able to over/under clock was one of the reasons I wanted to jump to a custom ROM. That and I'm tired of how long it takes Verizon to get their act together on Android updates.
 
Not confusing for those who have rooted. For those like Dan who are on the fence, this just confused them a little more. I was hoping to hear from Dan soon.

On the bright side, I am running FRG01, with P3 1.1GHz kernel, and black glass theme. Everything is running very smooth. :D
 
I agree. I just worry about it confusing the folks that we have been coaching in this thread. It sounds great, but once you have rooted, which it the most confusing prart, everything else is a snap.

C'mon Dan. Where are you?:D
 
imo those that were on the fence were probably still confused and/or scared. this way is a whole lot easier and less scary!
 
Yeah but you still can't overclock or theme the OTA release until you root.

On a side note, I had some issues with the FRG01 release of Froyo on my droid and I had to back out to BB V0.4. Several apps would not run(force close), such as music and the stock texting app. Just a heads up in case anyone else tries it, I would like to hear their feedback. I did not wipe data or cache, as it said i didn't need to do so. Everything else seemed to run great.
 
I agree. It's been made as simple as possible. You have a great support group here to help, if you still haven't made the plunge, then maybe stock is the best route for you. That's fine.
You've heard the benefits, I don't think you have really heard of many, if any, recent horror stories. So your mind is made up. Even when my FRG01 ROM wasn't working, it was easy to back out with ROM manager.

FYI.... I still use the old rooting method. Once you root, and install ROM Manager, it's one click to switch ROMS, Kernels, or themes. Hell, I have done it 6 times in the last 24 hrs, just to try new stuff.

Ok, I didn't read this all the posts in this thread but I had to reply because the name of this thread and the question he asked cracked me up.. on a scale of 1-10 to root for a dumbass. Well it really depends on if your truly a dumbass or if you just think of yourself as one.. So, for a true dumbass, I'd say 10 because as a trainer I have seen some adults that I'm surprised they can even spell their name without help much less root a Droid. But if you just consider yourself one, if you take your time then I say 1. Hope you get it, best of luck.

Rename to update.zip and place it on your SD card, but not in a directory, Use RSD to flash sprecovery. Boot into sprecovery. Load the update.zip from your SD card. Reboot and enjoy the Froyo goodness!! This is all in the videos. All the files you need are also there except for BBV0.4 link that I just provided.
 
The main reason I rooted was because VZW was coming out with 2.1 and the Droid was so open and free I was scared Big Red might take that away. So, right before the release of 2.1 I used DMupdater for 2.0.1 and it was easy as pie. Now that I have been rooted I will never go back.

So my advice to anyone on the fence is to do it now while there is a DMupdater for 2.1 because once you have 2.2 on your phone and if you then choose to root you will have to use RSDlite to do it. I think thats the part that puts people on the fence (like me). It just feels so much safer doing it all from the phone :)

I'm still rooting for you Dan cuz I can tell you really want this but you just dont know how easy and safe it really is. I also dont think froyo 2.2 is gonna run that well on a stock Droid unless the official update from VZW includes a 800mhz kernel. Its kinda like how Win7 is so much better than XP but if you dont have the power XP may run better on an older box.
 
Because of this thread I rooted this weekend and couldn't be happier! Overall, pretty easy, and I'm a dumb blonde girl! LOL. Thank you all for the great advice and support!
