Root I give up...

OK. I have a MetroPCS Ascend. I have looked thru the steps to root my phone in the "All Things Root Guide". After MANY unsuccessful attempts with z4root (phone would back out to apps screen and never complete the rooting process) I attempted Gingerbreak. After installing and attempting to open Gingerbreak my phone got extremely sluggish and rebooted about 8 times. The phone still never rooted. Not sure what is going wrong but after so many failed attempts to root I'm afraid to do anything else. I'm wondering if anyone in my area (Metro Atlanta, GA) could help. Just drop me a PM or something. I am hoping to root and possibly get CM7 installed.

i am in georgia, lawerenceville to be exact.
and have you tried version 1.2 gingerbreak, u need a certain version sometime

first make sure that usb debugging is turn on, but also there is a way to install cm7 without rooting the phone...

Kevin-->I am in Loganville. Let me know if we can meet somewhere.

Nuttmeg-->Do I just follow the steps in the "Ultimate Customization Guide"?

Both--> At this point I'm afraid I'm going to break my phone. Yesterday when my phone was rebooting every 2 minutes I had to pull the battery. Every time I tried to open an app my phone would freeze and reboot.

I didn't know that cm7 required root access. I followed the Ultimate Customization Guide for cm7 and didn't notice any point in which I needed root. I could be wrong though.

Use the "Installing ClockworkMod (CWM)" zip file and instructions under the Ultimate Customization Guide.

To install a ROM w/o rooting:

install CWM via the fastboot method, download your ROM of choice and place it on your sdcard, power off, boot into CWM by pressing SEND, VOL UP, POWER, wipe data/factory reset, wipe cache, > advanced > wipe davlik cache, back to main menu, install from sdcard, select from sdcard, select your <rom>.zip, confirm, wait, reboot.

This is how I did it. I knew that I was right to say that root is not required :D

Until my gtab i didnt know any different lol.

Normally tho ppl install rom manager and install CWM thru it the first time which requires root.

Ok. I am finally rooted (Gingerbreak). Now my issue is I can't seem to kill the bloatware. I've tried Titanium Back-up (can't find apk for Uno, MyExtras), Root Uninstaller (error-no explanation). I have also used Root Explorer and Astro File Manager to manually locate the apk files but cannot delete them. One says I don't have sufficient rights and the other says they are read-only files and cannot be deleted. So as of now I have a rooted phone for no apparent reason. Any help? TIA

Use root explorer, this time tap the white tab @ the top of the page to change from READ ONLY (R/O) to READ & WRITE (R/W).

I tried it again. I clicked the tab to activate r/w but once I click on the folder with the apk files in it it automatically changes back to r/o. I'm just trying to get rid of the bloat from Metro like Uno, the Free Games link, Loopt, etc.

Root explorer will do that for each sub folder sometimes. just change to RW while you're in the folder that you need to make changes in.

SAVETHEKNOT---Thanks!!!! I have been working on root explorer for hours before i found this thread, I tried ver. 2.16 and it worked perfectly!!
