I Hate Phone List

By "get a clue" I wasn't saying everyone here has no clue about how phones work - I was referring to a valid concern that someone had and the inability for anyone to say... "yeah, you're right - it WOULD be nice to have it set up differently". Maybe I'm outnumbered here by people who are too busy telling us that this is the way all the phones work instead of thinking outside the box and coming up with a better idea.

And yes, the call history is nice - which is why I don't want to have to clear it and I never said to get rid of it - I only said it doesn't need to share the screen with the dial pad. Are you going to dial the pad AND click on a contact at the same time? I've been designing user interfaces for years, just getting started with the Android platform and I can tell you it's an improvement waiting to happen.

Every one of 12 or 13 cell phones I've had.

I push the green 'Call button'.

The most recent calls come up.

So if I push 'Green, Green', it calls the last contact. Is this really different than any other phone, at this basic level?

I've never had a blackberry. But this is what I'm used to and if it weren't this way, I'd be making this same thread, to the opposite effect.

It certainly could use a lot more options in terms of what the Green button does, how it sorts things in Dialer call list, a quicker list of contacts, etc. But in general, pressing the green button, I've NEVER seen it do anything OTHER than list the most recently called contacts. Again, 'Call, Call' always calls the last person. I've never seen it any other way.

People will whine and complain about anything it seems. So it's not exactly the same way as your last phone, wow that's amazing because IT'S A DIFFERENT PHONE.

The 'smart dialing' works, all you have to do is start typing the first letters and presto, it automatically goes to it.

Whining and complaining about technology is what feeds innovation - so don't knock it. It's the whining and complaining about people whining and complaining that has nothing to offer.

Yes, it's a different phone - thanks for letting me know. Yes, smart dialing works - I never said it didn't. I actually love my Eris one of the best phones I've had and if there are people at HTC and in the Android community that listens to the complaints instead of whining about them then it stands a chance of staying that way.

Well, what would you prefer to come up when you hit the phone button? Do you want a list of all your contacts? Try opening the people widget instead. Do you just want your favorites? Use the favorite people widget instead. Do you just want the dial pad by itself? Where would you move the call logs? I'm not a phone or app developer. I'm sure that HTC would be happy to hear your concerns and possibly do something about it. Doubtful, but possible. The simple fact of the matter is that it is pretty much how most phones work. If you and the OP really have that much of a problem with it then you might want to work with a developer and see if you can come up with a different solution. While I agree that thinking outside the box is a good thing, the fact of the matter is that the phone is already set up for multiple ways of finding and connecting with a contact. I am not sure how you would improve on this, but if you really think there is a better way then work on it. Offer it in the market. There may be thousands of people waiting for this. You never know.

My comment about whining was more directed towards the OP, which the title of the thread could be renamed, "I hate the phone list because it's different from my last phone".

Well, I already use the people widget when I want a contact list and if I want a list of my favorite people I use the widget for that... So I'm good there, but yes, I also want to dial using the number pad by itself and I don't understand why anyone would assume that doing so would preclude the use of a call log. I just don't understand why you have to have both at the same time.

It really doesn't bother me THAT much, but I am a developer who is looking for opportunities to work on the android platform and I think it would be simple enough to fix it so that anytime some one wants to borrow your phone to make a quick call (I see this happening all the time) the owner doesn't have his personal calls listed on top. Its a small idea - not asking for the world here.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want to see the call log when pressing the phone button? It makes it a whole lot easier to call someone back

We obviously run in different circles. I have never had anyone ask to borrow my cell phone to make a call. They all have their own. :)

Like I said though, if you think there is a need for it then do something with it. I look forward to seeing it. If you really do plan on developing though, don't do it for 1.5 it would be a waste of time.

I don't get what this guy is b&@*hing about. Just put a People shortcut on you front screen and press it instead of your hard call button.

BTW I just searched the Market for Dialer and Dial Pad and came up with many options. Soooooo.......why don't you go use it and stop crying?Their is even a rotary dialpad that doesn't show contacts. HA

People annoy me that come here and cry but never think to check the Market for the solution. These people should have stayed with their old phones because they wasted money on a phone and aren't even using the best feature, The Market!

Most people do have their own phones, but I still see people borrowing phones. Being on Verizon I've been asked a number of times by friends on Sprint if they can use my phone simply because I have a signal and they don't.

Anyway... good point about 1.5, I know it's on it's way out but the reason why I have an emulator for 1.5 because that's what my phone uses... I'd like to be able to test my apps on my own phone. If I could upgrade my phone to 2.0 I would. Do you know if I can?

I suppose it does. But why not just have a call log app by itself? Why not have the option of configuring the phone so you can map the phone button to what you want?

The reason why I don't want to to see the call log when dialing numbers is because I don't need it when I'm dialing numbers. Also, if someone else wants to use my phone to dial a number I'd prefer not to have my call log exposed. It's not a huge deal - the only reason why I bring it up is because it would be so easy to change... (well, technically).

There are many. Just as they say and no offense caddy you are one of the few I respect here "think outside of your old box" and search the Market for dial pad or dialer. Most people complain about things that their phones don't do before ever checking the Market. Just sayin.

Name me any phone that shows the call history when you press phone and takes the contact out of the alphabetic order and puts it at the top of the list in call history order.

You are correct, phones have TWO separate lists, phone directory and call history. When you press phone you get the phone directory unless you ask for the history.

About 6 different Motorolla phones some smart, some dumb, HTC Tilt, Blackberry, iPhone.

In all the above, when you press the phone button or touch screen you get your phone list directory.

every phone I've EVER had has done this.
the RECENT CALL LIST IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PRESS SEND/PHONE
the ADDRESS BOOK happens when you open the ADDRESS BOOK
IDIOTS are people who never pay attention to things and then yell at the world that its not their fault

You need new friends that value their connections. :D

I know you can download the 2.0 emulator, but as of right now you can't put 2.anything on an Eris. We are waiting for root access or an OTA update.

I will agree with you on this for the most part. Although I think some people just like to complain. The market is a great source for problem solution. The market needs a slogan.....hmmmm.....The Android Market, it's not just for fart apps anymore. :D

Not really trying to call you out on this, I just found it really funny. The post you were....umm.....yelling about was made on 11-30-2009, 08:42 PM. :D

Wow...honestly people are complaining about this??? Push the call button, your call history comes up. Touch the People app, it gives you an alphabetical list of all your contacts.

I have the People Widget on my phone (one that takes up an entire screen). The widget has all the people that I labeled as my "Favorites", the ones I call the most so all I have to do is touch their picture and it calls them. If I need to call a different contact, I simply touch the icon at the bottom of the widget with three lines. Voila! My entire contact list in alphabetical order that lets me type in a person's name and brings them up instead of scrolling through tons of contacts! It's so darn easy that I find it utterly hilarious that anyone could complain about it.

I too agree that there should be more control over the phone App. I used a BB for 2 years and always used the phone app out of the box. Hit Call and get the call history on the screen. Hit call again to dial last person or scroll down to the one you want and blammo.

My concerns with the phone app are partly due to the call history, but not because it comes up (i want it to) but the wrong ONE comes up (there is another, better Call History when selecting "Menu > Call History" from the phone App.)

I have other complaints about the phone app that are more frustrating that this, i made a separate post as to not get off track with this one here and to get answers to more specific complaints/questions.

OP, i do wish that there were more control over the phone app...maybe... maybe, with out powers combined we can reach the ears of the android developers!

Good luck, i'll be following the post as well..

ummmm...

My LG Dare, BB storm 1&2 <--and BB tour <--(All by default. I did not see a need to change the settings. If it is possible... idk if it is), heck even my Moto Razr

Shall i go on? I could but i think that might just be overkill. :D

That's the way I see it, but then again, I've made a living looking for things that people complain about and providing solutions for them, so I'm kinda geared that way.

As for my friends, yeah some of them have Sprint, but usually because they value customer service, which Verizon sucks at - so you get better coverage or better customer service. For those who can borrow my phone on rare occasions that they are in a hole, Sprint can often be the better choice. Me, I went with better coverage.

Really? I find the complete opposite to be the case. With the exception of tech support (which I rarely use anyway) I find VZW to have excellent customer service. My company uses Sprint for wireless on our laptops and we are constantly having problems with them. They can't seem to do anything right. At the same time, a few people in the office have them for their cell phones and have the same problems. Weird.

uv-catastrophe,

Dismissing the phone keypad if you want to see only the call history only takes a single tap.

Launching the contacts app ("People") also takes a single tap, once you've installed a shortcut.

In contrast, your tapped on your keyboard at least 4249 times in a single day to complain about those "extra" taps.

Something to think about, anyway. :o
