Help i have a huge problem

and its to do with memory issue on my black desire.

got it last june, brilliant phone.

the one thing thats winding me up is the low memory warnings.

and now today, my phone is, well, kaput!

cant do anything as it force closes anything that i open.

obviously, i can hard reset, but i want to back up first.

but mybackup pro would not work as i dont have enough space!!!

wtf?

i'm running stock 2.1 that came with the phone. i did not do any OTA updates, or romming, or rooting. nothing.

and the reason why i never updated officially is because of reports that people were missing wifi, or sms messages deleting themselves.

not happy that i now have a

forgot to add, the email widget seems to not delete emails when i delete them. the email app (stock) was showing over 100mb in size. even though i delete all emails form the trash folder.

it was the email app that was eating the majority of the space.

any solutions around this? once i get my phone up and runnig of course...

EVERYTHING force closes?!

Maybe you could open the settings and uninstall some apps...
I doubt that would force close?

You could root and flash a 2.1 custom ROM without wiping... then set up an ext partition so you would have some extra space..... But that is LONG!

Factory reset is not as bad as it sounds. Good luck.

UPDATE YOUR PHONE.

You will NOT have any WiFi issues or sms deleting ones, this is all bogus

2.2 improves greatly over 2.1, this is common sense. You also get apps2sd so you can install a lot more apps. Your phone is fine, but you need to keep it up to date. How can just installing updates be hard?

Just a little tip btw, read this article: FAQ: Why You Shouldn’t Be Using a Task Killer with Android it's a common misconception, I'm sure you fell for it ;)

Nobody else seems to mention this, but try clearing the cache of all of your apps, including system ones. This can be done easily for all at once with quicksysysteminfo app or manually for each one in the settings for each app.

UPDATE YOUR PHONE.

He will not be able to update until he clears some space...

Menu - Settings - Applications - Manage applications.

You will need to clear a lot of space - be ruthless with free apps. You can always download again from the Market. Do your backup -

Then, UPDATE YOUR PHONE!

(Please! - You will be showing up as a fragmentation statistic!)

Menu - About phone - System software updates

This will take a while, but is worth it.

Get App2SD from the market. You can use this to safely move apps to the SD card which will help.

I thought I would add onto this for those who have mentioned Froyo's Apps2SD..

this is not a golden cure all fix...the Apps2SD that is present in Froyo is ok but still not great. It will only move certain apps, those which have been coded or recoded to allow the move and it will also not allow the ENTIRE app to go over...so you will still fill up the internal NAND with core files from apps. This is better than EVERYTHING being on the NAND but it will quickly fill up as well.

Ultimately you will need to Root your phone and flash a custom ROM which has Apps2SD+ built in which will allow anything from a 500MB to 1GB partition on your SD card which will 'act' as internal NAND on the phone...this allowing you to not need to to worry about the space issue...(least not for a VERY long time)

But right now what you need to do IF you can access system>settings>applications and that is to uninstall uneeded programs. But like was mentioned above...clearing your cache will help first off. Then go for the uninstalls.

If this all fails then unfortunately a full system restore will be needed so I would suggest at least making sure all your phone numbers are either synced to your google account or stored on sim.

thank you guys.

i have managed to back everything up through mybackup pro.

now, before i hard reset and update to 2.2, i have a couple of questions:

my phone was originally locked on orange and i got it unlocked.

will the phone still be unlocked after the 2.2 update? (my sim is currently in my samsung)

and what do i do first after the reset? do i restore my backup? or do i go straight for the update, then restore the backup?

thanks

Well I'll answer the last question....you do the update first then restore backup...as the update will wipe the phone again anyway.

Must admit I am not sure about locking/ unlocking. I would be tempted to put the original SIM back in and do the update. I think if it does lock it, can you not just unlock it again?
