I don't get why some people will not just WAIT until the official OTA - you will have it very shortly!

Why bother/hassle with installing it another way, and risk something bad happening? I just don't get it...

I am with you on the waiting part, I don't get how people can't wait a few days to a week to get a phone update.

but I disagree with you on part B, there really isn't much risk of "something bad happening" unless you are jumping into something too fast without researching.

People do different things for different reasons, "different strokes for different folks" or something like that.

I personally was rooted, and was running the leaked RUU that was cooked into a ROM, and it was good, but I personally wanted to go back to stock and am waiting for the OTA. everyone is different,
and if you absolutely cannot wait to get you some Froyo,
I'd suggest reading up on rooting, or flashing the 2.2 RUU.

FWIW, it took me a month of reading and downloading files for root before I decided to root my Eris.

Verizon ......is kinda WEIRD, WHY are they so hush hush about when and how they push out these updates, what is the big deal? Let us in on the big secret.

On the Twitter support for Verizon they say that it is random. No secret. you just have to be lucky I guess.

why wait when its ready to download now?
that makes absolutely no sense. htc windows phones have been using this method for years. IT IS NOT NEW OR RISKY.

Yes indeed I will be doing a full factory restore after the OTA 2.2

and I highly suggest those to follow suit.

it has been proven in the past this helps ten fold.

If you are going to go through the hassle to do a wipe, you might as well upload the RUU and not wait for the OTA. Wiping is part of the install of the RUU.

The benefit of having it come OTA is that it won't wipe the device. To me, it doesn't make sense to wait for OTA and wipe. Do it now with the readily available RUU and be done with it. It's the exact same as the OTA...

Do we have proof that the RUU is the EXACT same thing as the OTA with the obvious exception of being a fresh install? Real proof?

BTW... just asking for real in case any tone of disbelief or doubt comes from my inquiry.

Thanks

Yes. All versions and builds match between the 2: Meaning they are exactly the same.

Well I said the hell with it backed up my apps using Astro and ran the RUU. Install went great, restored all my apps and now back up an running. If anyone is waiting for the OTA, run the RUU, backup your apps before doing so and then restore them using Astro or some other backup program worked great for me.

Hopefully not getting on nerves here... but just to make the whole issue clear and safe for everyone, do you know where you have seen those results and also, more importantly, would the RUU install appear to be a legit install to Verizon in case of warranty or upgrades?

Again, thanks... hopefully this clarification will help some people needlessly waiting for an update because frankly the thought of a fresh install is preferred by this IT person.

Still, even if all of the above is GTG... there is still the "what if" risk if something goes wrong during the RUU update... trying to explain that to Verizon/warranty/tech support still sounds a little sketchy/troubling.

I did the RUU, so I have been able to personally check the versions, which match with the official listed numbers posted by Verizon.

Yes, the RUU install would appear exactly the same as someone who installed the OTA and did a factory reset.

RUU stands for ROM Upgrade Utility, and is 100% legit. From HTCs own site:
http://www.htc.com/uploadedFiles/Common/Software_Download/Detailed_RUU_Instructions_09232009.pdf

While the file itself is not official, it is a leak of one that is and just has not been released.

If you have a Muprhys Law moment, just tell them whatever went wrong, happened during the OTA. Any "what ifs" are the same with the OTA, namely the phone losing power in the middle of the install.

Has anybody compared the version numbers to verify they are exactly the same?

By these guidelines the poll should be 100% people who have received the OTA.

Right but the poll was pointless when its opened first thing on Friday 8/27 when no has it yet. making this thread a clusterf**** for many, many pages.

The new radio and update does not fix the call quality. Reception is better and signal bars correlate with dBm signal better, but same garbled quality and dropped voices- for more calls than not.
