Root I need help please

trying to root thunderbolt before next OTA. currently running software 1.13.605.7. Have all files necessary and ADB is set up and ready to go, but where do I find the new 1.70.605.0 RUU so I can have a stock rooted thunderbolt with no ROM. Any help will be greatly appreciated, If someone can walk me thru it, I will give you my IM information or maybe even remote desktop if possible.

awsome! i commend you in your decision to root before its too late, and for trying to have all your ducks in a row prior.

as youre aware, the root process will leave you on rooted mr1(1.13.605.7) and youll want to flash the rooted OTA(1.70.605.0) immediately after.

this version is completely stock(+ root acess and busybox) with all the bloat.
[ROM] Official 1.70.605.0 MR2 OTA Deodexed Rooted Busybox Mirrors Added :D - xda-developers

download the radio and rom files and have them ready to go and move to your SD card once you boot the mr1 upgrade RUU.

if you want a "debloated" stock rom,i believe there is one of those hangin around on xda as well.

youll flash the rom in clockwork recovery, and the radios in hboot. let us know if you have any further questions :)

i dont know if i would be available to walk you thru in IM,but some advice: watch the videos, getting ADB set up and seeing your phone is honestly the hardest part. its easy once you get that far,its just a matter if cutting and pasting and following the guide :) watch the steps 2-9 video so that you have an idea wht it looks like, but dont try and use it as the guide- get your cutting and pasting and guide steps from the xda thread: [ROOT] MR1/OTA PermRoot + Unlock Bootloader - Safer/Easier 5/12/2011 - xda-developers

here is a copy of my session, maybe it will help. the red are commands i cut and pasted, the blue is just some additional directions. yours will look alittle different, since youll prolly put your extracted exploits files into the tools directory, assuming youve pasted all of platform tools into tools as i have. so your first line will look like this: cd c:\android-sdk-windows\tools and your prompt will say tools where mine says flashables.

i was doing cm7,but you will sub that for the 1.70.605.0 rooted rom. this is how i did it,immediately flashing cm7 during the same session as rooting. this is optional, you could do this part several different ways, but this way is quick and easy since you have adb running and your phone connected. just make sure if you choose to do it differently, that you dont accept any requests to OTA upgrade

last and not least,a couple of common issues:
- not putting the exploit files into the same file as sdk(usually tools) to push them from
- adb stops seeing your phone. try unplugging usb cable, wait a minute, pluf into a different port. make sure usb debugging stays on.(if its off adb will not seey our phone,so make it one of the first things you check)
- prollems with PG05IMG files. makse suree your sd card is formatted FAT32 and the file is named EXACTLY PG05IMG.zip(remember windows automatically adds and hides the extention,so if you try and type it the file may be in reality named PG05IMG.zip.zip )

ill post up if i can think of any more. :)

are you saying that those of us who updated are unable to root...forever?

and if you are still confused after reading the post... the update you just got is MR2(Maintenance Release #2),firmware version 1.70.605.0,wich is still rootable, youll just need to make sure you flash a rom immdeiately after,as the guide is outdated and your phone will want you to OTA if you try and run rooted MR1. there are rooted versions of MR2 you can flash in recovery after rooting if you wish to continue running stock rooted firmware.

the upcoming gingerbread update is currently unrootable, and new exploits may not be found for some time. or ever.

for further info, check out the first page here in the root forum, there have been several discussions about it lately.

Okay so just to clarify. Do all steps and once in hboot, flash rooted mr1, and then flash rooted mr2 BEFORE turning on my tb to get rom manager and flash cwm to avoid any potential ota? About to take the plunge lol.

If I understand the question correctly, that is correct. Sorta. As the last step,You'll flash the upgrade mr1 ruu. let it fully boot, then skip past the setup so you can turn on USB disc drive mode and move the rom and radio to your SD card, and delete the upgrade mr1 pg05img.

Clockwork recovery is included in the mr1 upgrade,so you wont actually need to get rom manager at all.

Ill try and watch the thread here in case you have any prollems. Should be up for a bit :)

Thank you everybody that offered the help. :D Got done about 2 a.m. this morning after working on it almost all day. Anybody know of the best, most stable ROM?

Congratulations! Your cigar and blazer are on the table. I'm sure there will be some rom suggestions shortly. A big question that will help is how do feel about sense?

I use cm7 as my personal daily driver(I'm not a sense fan ;))
