Root I need to choose a custom ROM for my cappy

I just got tired of waiting Samsung and AT&T, these companies don't care about post-sale customer satisfaction. Samsung should learn a little bit of Apple and even Nokia on this matter.

Anyway, I want to flash a custom Froyo ROM but there are so many options that I don't know which to pick. I did some research but the results don't give me the details I'm looking for my cappy. That's why I'm here to ask for your help.

My list of ROMS include: Cognition, Axura, Assonance and Perception. I want to know which of these will give me:

- The latest Froyo version (no betas) I don't know if such thing exists or it's about kernel versions.
- TouchWiz by default (believe it or not I like it)
- Swype
- Latest Google apps including the Market
- GPS issue completely solved
- I've read that some ROMs have problems with bluetooth and data connectivity, I'd like to avoid that
- Multi language support
- Get rid of Samsung and AT&T bloatware
- I'm not into overclocking or lag fixes, however I don't care about changing the file system if necessary.

Yeah, I would like to know the answer to this. But I'd rather know the advantages and disadvantages to each ROM.
 
You need to spend some time reading on XDA. I went from stock to Axura 2.1 (Froyo) w/ Setirons 1.4.3 kernel and I love the performance so much that I will not be going to the stock 2.2 Froyo from Samsung.

Doesn't exist. As gets repeated over and over on these forums: There is no non-beta Android 2.2 for the Captivate yet. All the ROMs are either based upon early, buggy, internal leaked developer "beta" ROMs, or ROMs from other Galaxy S hardware that has been hacked-up to try and make it work as well as possible on the Captivate (which isn't 100% compatible).

Doesn't exist, as Samsung has yet to release a 100% fix for any Galaxy S model, least of which the Captivate.
 
I was previously using Cog but switched to Axura, I've been extremely pleased with it so far. No bugs and it's really fast, no lag whatsoever.
 
Look out for Assonance 4.3...I know people like Axura a lot...but once u go to assonance there is no going back...look out for his newest version with gingerbread features...most stable rom ever and if u find any bugs the developer fixes really quickly...

I think I made my mind and I'm going to try Axura. Assonance seems appealing but I hate the idea of messing around with the Hummingbird clock/voltages and the default kernel does that (switching kernels is too much for my first custom ROM experience).

Axura RC 2.2 remains conservative and I love the added UI effects.

However, I'm postponing the Axura installation because I decided to wait one more week for the official Froyo upgrade.

If I finally install Axura, I'll post about how it went.
 
I'm leaning heavily toward Axura as well but like the OP I'm going to wait until the my schedule quiets down between Christmas and New Year to root and install unless ATT releases something first.
 
From what I'm reading ,Axura is a battery hog. I'm thinking Assonance, I'm sure I can ask which kernel isn't involved with the OC stuff and drop that one in instead. Might as well go for the whole enchilada!

Having tried both, I definitely like Assonance more than Axura. I used Assonance 4.3 and Axura 2.2.

At this point, my favorite is version 4 of Perception. I think I am going to stay on this one until I have a compelling reason to change. It is fast, stable on my phone, and has little lag.

I went from Perception to Assonance to Axura. Why? Because both Perception and Assonance have charging death. Axura is nearly perfect: runs great even when OC'ed to 1200. The only issue is VM notification which doesn't matter to me as I have the VM-to-text feature from my carrier.

Also, Axura is NOT a battery hog: follow ROM install instructions and wipe battery stats and you will see the difference. Cheers.

While some of the newer builds of Perception may have problems with charging death, I do not believe that is a bug associated with version 4. I have found perception 4 to be very stable, even overclocked to 1200.

I find axura to be far from perfect. But to each his own. I am not telling you that you are wrong for liking axura. It comes down to personal preference.

Lastly, I always wipe battery stats and I do not find axura to be any better on battery than most roms.

I use assonance with xcaliburinhand's kernel since it's not overclocked. I'd recommend that combo to anyone trying to decide on what ROM/Kernel to use and don't want an overclock. The versions I'm using are assonance 4.3 and xcal 2.2.1, so both are slightly out of date!

what is "charging death" please?

ETA: answered my own question with a quick search on XDA - seems more of an "annoyance" than a major issue unless though ?

Axura is what I'm leaning toward but do need VM notification. What's the problem with that feature - doesn't it work at all?

I am on assonance since 3.0 and now using 5.0...I always use Xcul kernel and some different modem..now using JL3....just had charging death when i didnt use xcul kernel...this oc/uv is not meant for my cappy..

When charging (usually overnight), and battery reaches 100% for a while, kernel panics and the phone freezes. The only way to fix that is to take out the battery, re-insert battery and power on.

Axura developers haven't been able to include VM notification thus far. They say that they are working on a fix.

As I said elsewhere, Perception 4 is probably the most stable of the custom ROMs, although a little older and missing some features of the newer custom ROMs.

However, other than di11igaf's Rom, every other custom ROM is the about the same when it comes to battery life. I did NOT say that Axura is better for battery life. I'm saying that it's NOT a "battery hog" compared to other custom ROMs :) Cheers.
 
Here I am again.

Well I waited for the official Froyo and nothing to be seen... Samsung is more interested in releasing new devices and not in supporting current ones.

On Sunday, I started my experiment, I installed Axura 2.4, it was a good experience overall, excellent transition effects and for the first time I got my GPS working, the only problem I had was battery life, it didn't seem better than stock Eclair, in fact I think it was detrimental somehow (btw I recalibrated the battery). I used the phone until battery was completely drained, the phone turned off logically but the strange part was that when I plugged it to the charger I couldn't get it to charge normally, it didn't respond in anyway, I had to pulled the battery out to revive it.

The experience was good so far but I wanted to give Assonance 5.0 a try. I lost Axura new effects and GPS functionality, however Assonance feels more stable, sleek and fast, battery life is also very good, it seems the dev has worked hard debugging this ROM. I just replaced the music player and lockscreen for the stock ones, everything else, including SetiroN OC kernel, was left intact. Up to now, I have experienced no problems, not even a blink.

Due to my new learning curve, I managed to screw Assonance installation by modifying a wrong system file. I took the chance and tested the recently released Axura 2.5 to see what was new. When I was applying the recommended GPS config, the phone just rebooted and got stuck into a loop in the boot screen (the creepy hands), nothing responded so I had to pulled the battery out... again... and that was enough for me.

I reinstalled Assonance 5.0 and now I'm a very happy user of this amazing Froyo ROM :D I fully recommend it for those who want to deep into custom ROMs for the first time.

It does but it didn't work for me. Axura solution was better, I was getting accurate positioning within 20 secs. Despite this, I prefer Assonance, I can live without GPS.

Well, that's a disappointment, I hadn't heard anyone else saying that on the XDA developer's thread. Hopefully that won't be the case for me.
