Root I need to choose a custom ROM for my cappy

Why are you all obsessed with the ROMs with funny names? Ports of Doc's, Darky's, and Jim's i9000 ROMs are pretty close to the latest stock Froyo 2.2.1 releases, and don't mess around with OC kernels (a no-no for early in your flashing career).

Darky's rom has really grown on me.

Even so, I am really looking forward to trying Eugene's gingerbread themed rom next.

I didn't choose my ROM based on its name, dear god man is that you are insinuating?!?! I think it has less to do with the name and more to do with their reputations on XDA. I read everything I could and chose assonance because I value stability over everything else. With xcals kernel it is the most stable ROM from what I've read. So far so good for me.

EDIT: Or maybe because it has the *shing* *sparkle* *sparkle* to it...I like shiny things...

17 seconds for 11 satellites (indoors, near curtained window).

10m accuracy.

Running the latest Axura ROM (2.5.1). This ROM rocks! VM notification has finally been fixed and it's got a snazzy new theme as well. Stable and fast, just like most of the other high profile ROMs.

xtremesv - No need to change the GPS setting to Google. Default one works just fine. Cheers.

EDIT> Just noticed that the Developer has closed the Axura thread. Too bad, it is my favourite ROM. I'll probably keep using the latest version until someone comes up with a significantly better ROM (no point updating for minor versions).

So bad the thread is closed, Axura is a pretty good ROM (not perfect, as no ROM is).

Thank you sabesh, I used both GPS settings (spirent & google), they both worked great but "google config" gave me quicker locks.

I've just flashed Assonance 5.2, so far so good, nothing new except for the JL3 modem and SetiroN kernel 1.4.7. GPS seems to work better but still not as good as Axura. I'm testing battery life and I'm paying big attention to this because I've read about JL3 draining more battery than JK3/JK4 modems. For now, using wifi for playing videos on youtube, battery is within normal discharge I would say. I'll test later on 3G browsing, which for me, is the hardest pressure I can inflict to the battery.

dilligafs 2.5 rom. best ive used. tried it the first day it came out, then tried assonance when it came out. used assonance for a while but it cant compete with dilligafs. in fact, when i looked at them side by side, they looked almost identical so i think theres only minor differences between them. but dilligafs home button haptic feedback works and i havent found any other i9000 based roms that have that working, and i like the theme with dilligfs rom too.
i thought perception was ok, seemed stable enough and designgears updates it often. i guess cognition is pretty much done but i dont know for sure. havent tried axura or whatever its called yet but read that its pretty good.
but what ever rom i try, i always go back to dillis, its really underestimated.

I just got tired of waiting Samsung and AT&T, these companies don't care about post-sale customer satisfaction. Samsung should learn a little bit of Apple and even Nokia on this matter.

Anyway, I want to flash a custom Froyo ROM but there are so many options that I don't know which to pick. I did some research but the results don't give me the details I'm looking for my cappy. That's why I'm here to ask for your help.

My list of ROMS include: Cognition, Axura, Assonance and Perception. I want to know which of these will give me:

- The latest Froyo version (no betas) I don't know if such thing exists or it's about kernel versions.
- TouchWiz by default (believe it or not I like it)
- Swype
- Latest Google apps including the Market
- GPS issue completely solved
- I've read that some ROMs have problems with bluetooth and data connectivity, I'd like to avoid that
- Multi language support
- Get rid of Samsung and AT&T bloatware
- I'm not into overclocking or lag fixes, however I don't care about changing the file system if necessary.

Thanks for your feedback.

Finally, I think I found what I was looking for, I've installed Cezar's ROM (JPY) whose main purpose is to provide Froyo (2.2.1) with a more faithful Galaxy S experience for our Captivates. In essence, it's a official stock ROM for European Galaxy S (no OC, no strange launchers, no lag fix by default), the only thing you have to do is flash it together with a compatible modem (e.g. JK4 or JL3) and you're done. Of course, if you want to customize your ROM, you'll always be able to do so. Everything is working just excellent with this ROM :D

I'll keep you posted about this ROM if something weird comes off.

i am using darky's rom which as xcul kernel and jl3....everything working and i never had better battery life...it still 25 and i unplugged it last night...

i am heavy user..i do hell lot of stuff on it

For those that care, the last Axura dev (Adam) has renamed the ROM to Phoenix, and is making it truly his own. I am using his 1.0 version, and it rocks! Very fast, the best GPS I have found, and it is just plain awesome. Check out the Phoenix thread on XDA......

Thanx, calsax, I had seen that over on XDA. Now I have a choice to make, between that and Assonance, because I'm starting the new year with a new ROM.

FWIW - I prefer Phoenix over any of the others I've tried. It is the first ROM that gave me quick, accurate GPS locks. I have tried all of the big names, and will be sticking with this until there is a stable 2.3 kernel out.

Good luck with your first flash - I know you have been reading and participating a lot, so you should have no problems!:D

As enticing it is to try Phoenix (I was going to flash Auxura, but the drama stopped me) I see there's still drama swirling around that thread, plus it's a brand-new ROM. I've got Assonance settled in on the root of my SD. Tomorrow morning I will do the deed :)

I've been using Assonance since the 19th and have absolutely no regrets. Solid, fast, no lag, no FCs, and no drama. I recommend 5.2 without hesitation.

If you step back a bit, what's interesting is that there are several "favorites" when it comes to custom ROMs. What that says is that there's a widespread degree of satisfaction that's been achieved from using these customizations, and that it's no longer a wasteland of dangerous hacks. Instead, they've been baked by a group of motivated and talented individuals looking to squeeze as much out of the Captivate as possible while maintaining stability. And that's good.

Darky's 7.7

I second this. After trying out several ROMs over the week, I like Darky's & Doc's ROM ports for the Captivate. IMHO, it's a toss-up between the two. I used to like Assonance & Axura/Phoenix, but Darky's and Doc's have noticeably better battery life (they match dilligaf's ROM's battery life & have more features). Cheers.

Right now I'm using Perception 10.1 (Froyo 2.2.1) and it's a great alternative, very stable, fast and not extravagant.
