I really would love to root my Hero (Sprint)

thank you!!! now for aosp is it possible to get like the htc sense weather thingy?

You can buy something called Beautiful Widgets on the Android Market. It is definitely worth the money and has lots to offer in terms of variety and configurations.

The AOSP Android 2.2 ROM does not come with an HTC clock widget by default. Just check the Android Market for what I said above.

Yes, go to the Market and download Fancy Widgets, it's free

That works too. I only recommended Beautiful Widgets because of the huge variety.

I think I will check out Fancy Widgets later on. Thanks.

Enjoy, and you can customize it also, I am using the full long dates, and also the new digital clock version

For those of you following this thread, if I recall there is another way to boot into recover if you are rooted and have AOSP, you can hit the end key and that offers you the recovery from there if I recall, never tried though but I remember seeing it

It's been a year and I'm ready to Root my phone and try the CM6 ROM. There is plenty of information on how to do this on this forum. But I have just a few apps questions.
1 - I use the Sprint Navigation app (not Google Maps). Will I still be able to access this app after rooting/roming? What about the other Sprint proprietary apps?
2 - What about my paid apps. Will they still know that I paid for them through Google and will I get updates. Any problem when I reinstall them. I use MyBackup Pro as an example.
3 - I'm not worried about the rooting - it's just what happens to my apps?
Thank you.

Welcome to the Fun!
1) Yes but you will have to flash it - Believe the link is on page 2 of this thread.
2) I THINK paid apps are remembered but not sure - best Bet is to use Titanium backup after rooting - before flashing Cm6 or Aosp. - Not familiar with My backup pro - but is sounds like it will hold your apps.

Man... I just got scared out of my gourd for a bit.

I rooted my phone just a couple of days ago. Everything was fine. I hadn't gotten around to choosing a ROM yet. I figured just let things be for a while. Well... I'm just about to go to bed and set my alarm clock when I find my phone showing an HBoot 1.47 menu. There were a couple of options like Fast Boot... but nothing I tried seemed to work.

Finally, I decided to try "reset", fearing it may completely reset my phone. No big deal, because I did make a nandroid backup. And miraculously, my phone did restart. Everything seems fine.

What gives?? Why did my phone go into that HBoot menu? Any clues?

EDIT: Ah, I think I know why. My phone battery was completely drained. So weird, because I had about 30% left this afternoon. It shouldn't have died like that... unless, that Andida battery isn't so great after all.

Hi davekaye, here is my post from a previous page:
I'll be trying all day to get Sprint Navigation back, I don't like that voice either.

I found it and downloaded and it works!!

Using your phone, go to www.ota.telenav.com/ota/sn/nav and it should automatically download the app.:D

That is the software that Sprint uses. It works perfectly, just like before I rooted. Also, if you go get Titanium Backup, I have the free version, you can restore some of your apps with that. Also, there are posts here that talk about getting google apps which will put back some of the stuff you'll need.
I don't know about what happens with the paid apps since I hadn't purchased any up to that point. I recently purchased Root Explorer for $4 and it's fantastic! Totally worth the price. I already changed my boot animation with it. I really am not very tech savvy but I'm happy to help a fellow root newbie any way I can. :D

I rooted and flashed cm6 off this thread, thank you everyone. What is the best way to get apps back from my back up of the stock rom?

First Nandroid back up your CM6 Rom then you would need to go back to your stock rooted Rom, then download Titanium Backup on there, and then create a back up from there, then once done do a fresh Nandroid backup, then restore your back up of CM6 and then download Titanium on that ROM also, then restore your apps using TBU, check video in my signature

Or if you have your apps written down you can download again which is what I prefer, Old School

1. Use Google nav, sprint nav is a waste of space, lol

2. Paid apps will always be linked to your google account, If you buy a new phone? Those apps will be linked to your google account;)

3. Download them again from the market, then back them up with TB

Does Fancy Widgets give you an option to make the clock look like the one HTC Sense has? It's a mimic of the old flip style clocks and I've grown rather fond of it.

HTC Sense is slick, but it does seem to be a battery hog. Has anybody else here noticed this?

Also, do any of the other ROM's provide some customization on wakeup keys? My Hero tends to partially wake up a lot in my pocket, which consumes battery power. And unfortunately, it's easy for the buttons to be accidentally pressed and fully wake the phone. A few times I've pulled out my phone to find it on, unlocked, and lesser battery power due to the screen being on for long periods. I'd really like to see a feature that requires both the END/TALK buttons to be pressed simultaneously to wake the phone.

Yes, Fancy Widgets is supposed to be like the HTC style clocks and whatnot. I have not experienced horrible battery life with Sense UI at all. I regularly can get between a day and two days with moderate usage and over two days with light usage on my Sprint HTC Hero.

Your mileage may vary though. Everyone has a different setup.

Or just download TB when you first root and be done with it. Remember there are apps that are 2.2 only

No, it use to but they had to change the look because of HTC rights, I prefer FW anyways myself, here is what it looks like

I gotta give big props to DonB and MahaloCat. I have been lurking for a few days now, reading and researching this "root" and "rom" thing. I started by doing some recommended stuff to improve battery life and reduce lag. Took baby steps, rooted yesterday, removed stock apps, etc. After reading this post, i was encouraged to see how helpful the 2 of you were with val, and it gave me the confidence to backup, flash the aosp rom, and i feel like a whole new world has been opened up with regards to the possibilities of this phone! Thanks a ton, guys.

Your welcome bro, we are still learning something new everyday, we help others because others have helped us, called pay it forward, with the 3 Amigos here if you ever need anything let us know, Andy and MHC are both great books of knowledge and have taught me alot of what I have learned, I am sure if we don't know we will find answer. Enjoy your new Toy ;)

Please HELP!!! I have been wanting to root my Hero for a while now. I found this thread and followed the steps and rooted with z4root, did the nandroid, downloaded Rom Manager, downloaded and backed up with Titanium Backup, then downloaded LiquidSense, did another nandroid, restored with Titanium Backup and it worked fine. I have been playing with it all day! I was very impressed!!! I was about to head over to this page and tell my story but something BAD happened! I was using the Wireless Tether with my computer and it was doing great, but then it started getting a little choppy. I noticed the EV symbol in the notification bar on the phone started disappearing and reappearing and the cell signal dropped to 0-2 bars. All of a sudden I noticed the internet stopped and the phone went black. I thought the backlight just went out and I just needed to touch the screen and open the unlock screen. Well it did not respond. I tried to turn it on with the power/end button. I am panicking!!! I tried to hold volume and power button but no response. I also took the battery out but no luck. I tried hooking it up to my computer to see if I can restore it with the nandroid backup but because I can't turn the phone on, of course the computer does not recognize it's hooked up!!! What happened?!?! Is my phone bricked?!?! PLEASE HELP ME!!!
