Root I think I am ready for Voodoo

When you use the reboot option "Recovery" it brings you to the Samsung Recovery Utility NOT cwr so you have to apply the update.zip to get in to recovery. You have to do that each time you use that option (or at least I do, I just tried it twice in a row).

So I was wondering if when you select "Recovery" from the reboot options when on voodoo does it still bring you to the Samsung Utility first and if it does, would the update.zip get me to green or red cwr.

And the flash was successful for the voodoo kernel? You heard it all go completely through changing rfs to ext4

Sorry, maybe there is some confusion here. I haven't started the process yet. I just wanted to try and get as much information cleared up as possible prior to starting the process. I probably won't start it until later on tonight after I get home from work.

Most likely after I get my son to bed and whatnot, so probably around 9pm or so before I get the time to look at it. Haha, sorry for confusing you into think I am in the process now. :p

yes, if you dont have voodoo recovery *recovery* in reboot options will take you to stock recovery

Ok sweet, thanks! This is turning out to be pretty easy and straight forward. I just wanted to make sure I did my home work before even starting the process to hopefully avoid potential disasters. I think I am armed with enough information to recover from a few situations now that I have a basic understand of adb and the answers to my questions here.

The only thing that worries me slightly and it really shouldn't is wiping data and then getting everything back on. I guess I am just paranoid that TiBu won't do its job right or my contacts won't load back up or something.

Haha, anyway, thanks again guys for the help I really appreciate it. I will post back again tonight when I start the process!

Yea looks like you were on page 1 and I was on page 2 but Nit got ya squared away :D

Another quick question...if I wipe data do I have to reinstall the ROM first and then the kernel? Does someone have a link to the 11/29 non voodoo so I can have that in case I ever decide to go back?

Hopefully I can get to this later on tonight!

Ok, I am ready to take the plunge, who is with me? Seriously though, if someone can just answer my last few questions I think I am good to go.

I just want to know the order I have to wipe things and flash things. When I wipe the data does that wipe the radio too, or does that stay? Next, do I wipe data and then install a ROM and then install the kernel? Different order?

I'll be here off and on tonight.
When you wipe isnt a big deal. I assume you are using a DJ05 ROM and kernel though? Here's 11/29 - http://dl.dropbox.com/u/15246936/1129_test_novoodoo_fascinate.zip
Radio will be unaffected by your flashing rom or kernel. Also order wont matter much

Thanks for the link!

So does this sound good then:

- boot in to cwr
- wipe data
- install ROM from sdcard
- then install kernel from sdcard

Since I am wiping data, do I need to wipe the cache partition and Dalvik after installing the ROM or is the data wipe good? Also can I do that all in one session of cwr or should I install ROM then reboot and then install kernel?

(I will also create a backup before I start the process as well)

EDIT: Wow, no one is on tonight...

Sorry watching TV :p. The data wipe kinda does it for you so wiping cache is a tad redundant but there also no harm to doing it. For the official record a data wipe is not 100% mandatory though most do it. I tend not to myself with ROM's even though Im in the ultra minority

Gotcha, so does that order look good though? The main reason I want to do a data wipe is since voodoo is a pretty big change. Also, can I do it all in one session or do I reboot in between the ROM and kernel?

Order is fine and yes you can do it all at once aka without reboot though I tended to reboot myself in the past apparently its not necessary

Thanks! The process has begun! :p

How long does wiping data take? The progress bar hasn't even moved yet.

EDIT: Nevermind, its done. Sweet, I hear the woman's voice :)

EDIT2: I just booted in to red cwr to flash my theme and when I hit reboot now after flashing the theme I heard the voice again. Do you hear that voice every time it boots or just when you make changes?

So when you run TiBu to restore apps and data you have to go through each app individually? Or is that just because I am using the free version? This is pretty annoying, I wish I could just have it run them all without me having to click install and done for each one.

Aside from that, I already notice a pretty significant difference :)

Well the female voice you should have only heard the one time when converting rfs to ext4, but it sounds like you're gtg anyway

When I converted mine last week I only heard the voice once. I then did a friend of mines and he heard it twice as well after flashing a theme...come to find out somehow it disabled the lagfix and put it back to rfs, I confirmed this by running the mounts command in adb. I simply went back into red cwr and reenabled and he has been good since then.

Ok, so I reinstalled all of my apps and whatnot from TiBu, but now I notice that they don't show up in the download section of the market. Is there a way to get them to show up? Only like 6 or 7 show up at the moment. If they don't show up there, will I still get notification of updates?

Also, I found out why I heard the voice again. I must of disabled the lagfix when I was looking around red cwr. I think I am all set now. The one question I have though is what is the difference between enable/disable lagfix and enable/disable system/lagfix? Do you have to disable both if removing lagfix? Do I ever have to touch the system one?

EDIT: Nevermind about the apps showing up in market. I went back in market a second time and they were there now. Strange.

yeah you usually have to go the market a 2nd time for them to all sync back up

One thing that I have noticed since I installed voodoo, my market no longer gives me the option to update all. It is the new market, but the option doesn't show up. Anyone have any ideas?

Try clicking your menu button (lower left softkey) once in the market and the click my apps. That should give you the option to update all.

Strange, as I am running the new version of market with voodoo and it is there. Are you saying you have 'my apps' but when you click on it nothing comes up?

No everything comes up, it just doesn't give me the option to update all but I can update individually.

Take a look at the thread below and see if any of the suggestions get you going.

http://androidforums.com/fascinate-all-things-root/236258-new-market.html

There wasn't much in that thread that pertains to what I am seeing since I am not getting FC's or anything like that and for the most part the market works I just can't update all. Maybe I can try installing the market again.

It is just really weird since I am running the same ROM that I used prior to installing voodoo.
