Root I think I bricked my EVO

I rooted my EVO yesterday with the latest version of Unrevoked. I then installed MikFroyo 4.2. Everything was working awsome till this morning. I turned the phone off like I allways have, but when turned back on it stays locked in the HTC EVO 4G white screen.

I have removed the battery and reinstalled and still does the same. If I take the battery out and put back in, I can still get into the hboot screen. I chose reboot and it still locks up.

Is there something else I can try in the Hboot screen? I went into recovery and tried booting there as well with no success. Should I choose "wipe data/factory reset"?

Thanks in advance.

Did you do a nandroid backup before flashing the rom? If so you can always just restore. If you didn't, you can just go into recovery and do a data/factory wipe and start over from scratch.

Also how long did it stay on the white screen? Sometimes after flashing a rom it takes a little while for it to boot up.

Revert back to your nandroid backup if you made one. If not then factory reset and before doing anything else make a nandroid. You might be messed up because of the kernel. When you install a new rom try to install a new kernel to. Try to figure out what is compatible with the rom that you pick and try those kernels first. And pick one that is a low voltage.

Always make a nandroid backup.. That way when something goes wrong, you can just restore it. It took a lesson like this for me to know how important they are.

Also, if you can get into hboot and recovery, then you havent bricked, you can always try to wipe, if that doesnt work, then reflash the rom, or pick a new one, or nandroid.

Sorry it wasnt working :(

Keep in mind, if you can still get to your bootloader, whatever state your phone's in it's still generally fixable.

I've had this happen before with other ROMs. If you haven't already wiped data, go into recovery and wipe cache/dalvik, then try to boot up. There are a number of things that can cause this, and I can't guarantee that it won't just do it again once you reboot again, but it will probably help you get back into android. Start with that, and if it works, we can do some more troubleshooting.

Also, what did you do between flashing the ROM and rebooting the phone? (e.g. restored apps, flashed mods, etc.)

I had this problem. It ended up being because of unrevoked. I first used *Unroot 2.2* 3.29.651.5 10/20/10 - xda-developers

Then when that was done I used [ROOT] ~~~ HTC EVO - Universal Auto Root ~~~ v2.0 (Updated for 3.70)(1/4/11) - xda-developers

Then I put [ROM] VaelPak 3.0 [12/20/10] - NonSense - [HTC 2.6.32.17#15][FPSU] - 3.70.651.1 OTA - Android Forums on my phone.

So far it seems to be running amazingly smooth, quick and good battery life.

Edit: Don't forget to wipe before you install a new ROM.

A nandroid is simply a backup of your ROM before you flash. If you flash using ROM Manager there is an option to backup the current ROM. Always do a nandroid before flashing. They can come in very handy.

I have tried the factory restore and everything and it is still stuck on the screen that is white and says Htc evo 4g. I didn't root my phone or anything and upon taking it to sprint they said I don't have insurance which I thought I did and they said there was corrosion on the inside but when I looked inside looks brand new. any help would be awesome I just need my phone to work thanks.

If your phone were rooted we could troubleshoot this issue, but since you're not, the only thing you *can* do is let Sprint handle it. Since you don't have insurance you may have to come out of pocket and purchase another Evo, if that's what you still want.

Is your upgrade for your evo anytime soon? If it is you might try calling sprint, I've had alot more luck calling sprint than going in a store. Call them, tell them you thought you had insurance but don't, ask them if there is anyway they could help. You might be surprised what they will do for you, if your very nice and sweet. Lol. If you've been a sprint customer for a few years, they usually will try to help in some way. It couldn't hurt to try. Goodluck.

Can you get to hboot by chance? Power off the phone then hold volume down + Power til the white hboot screen comes up. If you can get there, you might be able to use an RUU that is for unrooting to get your phone to boot up. Let us know what happens trying to get to hboot.....it should take 10 seconds or so holding both down at the same time.

What is your hboot? Do you have s-on or s-off on the bootloader screen? Can you get to recovery? If so, which recovery do you currently have?

from there i hold the vol up key and pwr button and go to the purple screen and i do a data wipe/factory reset also do a cache partition wipe and then i reboot the system

Ok, it seems that you have nand unlocked(s-off) so you can flash a recovery start with. Go here and download the PC36IMG file for Amon RA 2.3. Follow the instructions there to get it flashed. After that we can get you running on a stock rom to get your phone working then you can look at other roms if you want.

i copied the files and what does he mean by open the terminal and type su ect

You need the zip file not the img file. The img file can be flashed through adb or terminal when the phone boots. Download this file. Place it on the root(top level) of your sdcard. Rename it exactly PC36IMG by taking off the "_RA_2.3". Reboot to the bootloader and it should scan for the file. Tell it to update. When finished tell it not to reboot, then select recovery. You should go to a black screen that says RA-Supersonic_2.3 on the bottom and has green writing with a bunch of menu choices.

ok im there next?

You can get to Recovery now? If so, go here and download the odex version. This is the latest rooted stock rom. Place it on the root of your sdcard, wipe cache, dalvik-cache, and userdata/factory reset. Select Flash Zip from sdcard, select the zip and confirm to flash. Once its done, reboot the phone. It may take a bit so be patient. Let me know if it boots ok and we can go from there.
