Try this ... make sure the phone is off (pull the battery). Then with the phone off, hold only the vol. down button and plug in the USB cable. Wait a few seconds ... Anything?

The red light means it's charging, but it should go into download mode. You might have a faulty cable. Try using a different cable. Samsung phones are very fussy with the connections.
