Root I want to disable my 3G/cell-tower radio completely

Semperverus

Newbie
I am working on converting my old Triumph into a ZuneDroid (personal media player), and I'd like to make the device no longer function as a phone whatsoever.

This would do a few things for me:
1) Guarantee there is no accidental enabling of the services, thereby preventing accidental battery loss.
2) No hack-around "invisible" icons to make the navigation bar look cleaner, and thereby leaving more actual real-estate.
3) Cleaner notification drawer.

Hopefully this doesn't require a complete kernel recompile. I'm not afraid of ADB (although I keep having to reference the remount and demount commands...), so that shouldn't be a problem. Not a fan of things like Root Explorer or special programs designed to mangle the file system in an unholy manner.

Thank you for any advice!

Sounds like fun. I think the ROM would have to be modified. There is airplane mode, but it can be reversed......

If we change the system from a phone to a tablet then that would work......

Also you can access phone testing menu via the dialer by entering *#*#4636#*#*. Then go to Phone Information > scroll down to the button marked Turn off radio > click to disable radio.

And I was going to burn you:o

I thought all that stuff wouldn't work on a non-stock ROM.

Nice.
forgot about the test menu... that is also available directly, in Battery Monitor Widget.

You can also make a shortcut to this with anycut.

Yeah me too. Tried it out on my cm7 triumph first before posting.

Also, here's a link to a very small PhoneInfo shortcut app if you don't want to dial every time https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.roy.phoneinfo&feature=more_from_developer#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEwMiwiY29tLnJveS5waG9uZWluZm8iXQ..

Use this on my N4 to switch network preferences in anticipation of the T-mobile San Diego LTE launch hopefully in may/june.

Thank you for all the tips guys. Sorry I didn't respond sooner, I was expecting the automatic email system to keep me up to date, and it didn't. Just checked back. Trying some of these out now.

EDIT:

So the 4636 method is pretty amazing, but not for the reasons I was asking for. The ability to toggle to LTE on the Nex4 is gonna be sweet.

With that aside, I was able to reproduce this already by kicking in airplane mode, then going back and enabling the wifi radio (does exactly the same thing and is a bit easier. I'm on MTDEV's android 4.0 if anyone is wondering).

I suppose I'll stick with what I've got for now. Although I wish someone like Rockbox would make a standalone ROM for these devices, with faster boot and faster music access. Keeping the device completely powered off is kind of important for me.
