Root I want to root, but Im a super noob...

I am sorry I must be annoying now. I want to be able to delete preset apps on my Desire, not to mention utilize Froyo NOW..Im sick of waiting. However I am a super noob and I am worried about messing my device up, etc..... Can someone help me on a one on one noob level? My specs are below.

HTC Desire 2.1
US Cellular

Bought device like 90 days ago maybe.

Please Please Please and thank you. Even a guide written in stupid dummy terms may help....but again I am a super noob and dont understand some terms.
