i897UCJH7 Firmware Update Leaked

I'm tempted to try the latest SRE once XDA gets up, just because. Though, with my luck, once I got everything re-situated the way I liked it, Froyo would drop.

Unrelated, but lordhamster, your name is full of win. It made me giggle.

The one thing i didnt like about sre is the oc 1.2 kernel i think it was eating up my battery like crazy , I went with the simpler utb, did everything i wanted pretty much

Couple of newb questions:

Can this be installed via clockwork or Odin? I'll still a bit confused about the differences between those two...

Assuming I'm running the stock samsung firmware/ROM which has been rooted w/ lag-fix and circle battery mod, it would probably be a good idea to undo all of that before trying this?

THANKS!

You are going to have to flash via odin to stock, and then use odin again to flash to jh7. You will lose all your apps and data when you do this . Before you do the flash you can backup app/data via titanium. So once you flash up to jh7 , you can install root, lag fix and apply battery mod again.

Anyone using this able to setup an Exchange account? When I try, I get a hang on "checking incoming settings", which is one of the last steps.

I also installed SRE 1.3, so I'm not sure if its the firmware or SRE.

Just posted on XDA by designgears : I897ucjh7 - not froyo, sorry guys :( - xda-developers
Looks like it's the final test firmware before the official release. Word from those that have flashed is that they are getting a GPS lock, INDOORS. Also, it LOOKS like updates to the phone will be done with Kies, not OTA. Also has been said that it's pretty quick and the lag issue has been addressed.

I just bought one of these phones and it should arrive later this week. I am aware of the GPS problem but what is the lag issue? Is that the issue when you press the home button and it takes a couple of seconds to work?

I'm having the same issue with Exchange so I flashed the original jf6 rom and I am still having an issue. Don't know what to do. I'm not happy.

Same here! I downloaded Touchdown and it'll connect just fine, but built-in Exchange support is screwed up, even wiping data and downgrading didn't fix it.

GPS receivers are not designed to work indoors - if you can get this to work then you are really in a select group. Generally GPS receivers need line of site access to the sky - they work poorly at ground level in NYC due to all the tall buildings.

Most people will not get a lock indoors with GPS, especially if their house is brick/stone/metal and has window coatings and other things that interfere with signals.

TomTom and garmin units don't work inside my house. Cellphones are a poor test unless you know that they are not using cell towers or wifi for aGPS.

Lets put it this way. I'd be happy if the update makes the captivate gps lock on even half as reliably as a garmin or even iphone.

I find it interesting that so many people are concerned about lock, when the real serious problem is accuracy after a lock. I've seen post after post of folks saying "It is fixed, I got it to lock in 15 seeconds!". only to post agan a day or two later to say it is still putting them as driving through a field.

There is an occasional person who says it works fine. I think they just haven't hit the right circumstances.

i got the same exchange issue... got the issue when trying to load lagfix only, not SRE. Can't setup exchange or hotmail(exchange). Currently on JF6 and i am dead in the water with this.

From that XDA thread it sounds like this is an old firmware that samsung made last month. Post #279-281. I'd be psyched to get GPS and a lag fix this month. I wasn't expecting froyo until the end of the year...that is what samsung said.

oh joy.... i would be so happy if my phone would connect to computers. but it, connects, to NONE :(

:'(

Oddly enough - my phone will connect to my Netbook running Ubuntu 10.04 flawlessly...however, it has a very temperamental relationship w/ my desktop running Windows 7 x64. Sometime it will connect...sometimes it will not.

I have never really had any issues with captivate and windows 7 64 bit , just have to make sure usb debug is on i think is all

Thank you, finally someone mentioned this. Locking was never really an issue, at least not for me, keeping the lock and accuracy are the main issues. Mine locks to 4-5 sats but puts me 2 miles away from where I actually am.
I'll give this firmware a shot tonight when I get home.
Even if GPS isn't fixed, the fact that people are saying, the phone is much quicker makes it worth installing.

By the way, for all of you who already flashed this. Did you do the same steps as before? Or is there anything special we have to do? Can this be flashed over JH3 firmware?

I agree. I want it to show me on the correct road. Also, Im new to my state, so using maps to locate something is now important. I would love to have it show my location, with 100 feet or so while I hold it at my lap or side in my truck. I dont care if it locks in 10 seconds or 60. just be accurate! I hate apple, but the iPhone can do this, why cant we?

You have flash back to stock from jh3 , then flash to jh7 then you can apply what ever fixes you want utb, sre, ext 4 lag, battery mod etc

Now I've never actually used Kies, but I have it downloaded, and it seems like it'd be pretty much plug and play.
Actually, just checked it out, there is a place to click for the firmware update. They will probably release an AT&T version of Kies for the Captivate, since the only version you can get right now is for the Galaxy S i9000, and has a lot of stuff that AT&T wouldn't much like haha.

At least for me, getting Kies to connect with my phone is pretty much hit and miss (mostly miss). Even when I do get it connected, it indicates that the firmware for the Captivate is not upgradable. Unless this is bad english (i.e., meaning there is no current upgrade available), then pushing it through Kies will not work.

Did anyone who flashed this, start having sync problems with gmail? It doesn't notify me of new emails anymore.

try going to settings -> Applications -> Manage Applications

Click the settings button and choose Filter -> All

Find "Gmail" and "Gmail Storage." Click each and do the "clear data" and "clear cache" button.

This has helped me in the past when flashing new roms and stuff and then getting gmail errors.

I actually seemed to have found the issue. I could be wrong, but this is what I discovered yesterday. After flashing to JH7 ROM, I used Titanium Backup to restore all my settings and apps. Right after that is when I started having sync issues. I noticed it, because I didn't restore my stuff immediately after I flashed this ROM, I actually waited a couple hours, because I was busy with other stuff and all my emails were coming in with no problems. Right after I restored all my settings, emails stopped.
What I did was, I restored everything back to stock JF6 and did the reset on the phone. After that I flashed again to JH7 and did not do the restore from backup and everything is working fine.

Thindery, I wish I saw your reply before I did all that, maybe it would have helped, instead of resetting everything.
In any case, this was my first and bad experience with TitaniumBackup, I don't think I'll use it again.
