ICS available

Woke up this morning with my Note telling me an update is available. Turned out to be an Ice Cream Sandwich for breakfast. Downloaded and installed in minutes. Works fine, though it zapped my home screen settings, so take notes first.

I'm in Ireland, though the phone is a German import.

Oooh, exciting :) No update for me yet (unlocked, unbranded, N-7000). Several million handsets need to be notified and I only received mine a couple of weeks ago.

The Verge link article suggests that the Premium Suite is not being delivered with the firmware upate. Can anyone confirm this? I wonder if it would instead be downloadable from the Samsung-specific app centre? The article also bemoans the fact that the update is for International N-7000s only, but seeing as the AT&T i-717 handset is actually quite different (different internal hardware and even a different case with no physical hom button) I don't find this very surprising.

It seems to be there alright. The new S Note app (an impressive-looking advanced version of S Memo) certainly is. The stylus response seems a bit better as well.

did you have to update via kies?

If I get too impatient waiting - is this a shortcut to acquiring and installing?

I had a look but it doesn't seem very clear!

Update - it seems you can download the update and install using Mobile Odin without needing to wipe the device. Is this equivalent to the OTA update or should I wait for the OTA to avoid other potential problems (warranty preservation, for example). I don't feel the urge to mod my firmware...

Anyone in the UK got it yet?

Mine is a GSM sold in the UK (Unlocked and no carrier bloat on it) tried OTA and Kies, nothing as yet, but i'll keep checking!

I had a SII and really did not think ICS was anything special, if anything i missed Gingerbread, so i think i'm gonna wait a see what people reviews are like on ICS on the Note, I really cant fault mine so far......so no need to update.

OK. For those who can't be bothered to look, Page 29 of my link has the instructions. Go to Sammobile and download and extract the fw.
Download odin
Follow instructions to letter. I very straightforward. You do not need to wipe so from step 4 is ok.
Enjoy a super smooth g note. Awesome and at last works how it should.

As someone who has not flashed any handset ROMs apart from official updates, is there any risk in doing this or is it basically the same as if you received an OTA update? I read somewhere that Odin might somehow invalidate the handset warranty?

Honestly its simple. I've had no bother as long as you follow thes instructions. All you are doing is using an official fw and another method of applying it (cos its not been issued OTA or via Kies yet).

I'm not rooted and don't want to, so it can get confusing when people talk about different roms and kernels.

Back up your data using one of the apps - always a good thing to do anyway.

If you just want this fw, down load it. Extract the tar file.

Down load odin (I used v.85 available on sammobile or xda forums will have the link).

In the PDA field, load the extracted tar file you just downloaded (its 600 odd mb), connect phone and follow instructions for getting phone in download mode. Once its ready and there a port number in the box, hit start and sit back. Took less than 10 mins to load it, then it installs in the device and jackpot.

As far as I know so long as its an official fw it wont upset the binary counter (or add a yellow triangle if a frankenstein fw had been used). This way you lose warranty.

If anyone would like to add to this feel free but think it covers all bases.

Feedback on the fw - its fast and smooth. I had the latest GB and was still a bit choppy.

2 problems (how do you feed these back to Samsung?) - Navigation got stuck when I unplugged the device from official car dock and I had to restart phone. Also S Planner got stuck and froze when trying to delete/edit an event created in a previous version.

Everything works even face unlock!!

I was already on ICS chinese leaked repack, time consuming process to safely flash to this (downgrade to stock GB, Root, flash ICS + CFRoot kernel in Mobile Odin). Still got bootloops after the initial flash to GB, quite unpredictable the Chinese leaked bootloaders at times. Now trying out stock ICS after having been on the leaked one for something like 11 weeks already...

How do you update via Kies?
And is this available before OTA?
Surely for unlocked phones there shouldn't be any need to wait for carriers to get their act together??

Make sure you have the most recent release of Kies, from Samsung. Plug ya device in, check the summary page, update if it shows available. Or force a check under Options if I remeber correctly.

Chances are that if its been release in Germany OTA, it will be in the UK, neither have been released via Kies or OTA checked at 1400hrs.

If the phone is GSM (not branded by a carrier) Samsung release the updates, its just not been released ....yet!

I have recently switched on a SII to ICS (before I got the Note) and have to say saw little improvement (Display, Battery life increase, browser) and even a little lag (Screen transistion, decreased GPS accuracy, messed up contacts sync, App support lacking).

A few nice touches here and there (Menu improvemnts, task switcher/killer, accelerated performace?) but over all would rather stick with a stable Gingerbread. I will wait a few weeks to see what the verdict is.

Saying that, if my Note was playing up I would take the risk also the update includes Samsung Premium Suite.

Once the ICS major bugs are ironed out (if any are reported on) i will update.

My new Note arrived today. I turned it on and off a few times getting it activated and figuring it out. The third time I turned it on, I was notified that an update was available but that the server was busy. The fourth, I was notified of an update and approved it. That was two hours ago.

The phone still shows a screen saying "Downloading...Do not turn off target!!!"

I had to drive around for an appointment, but not through areas where my old phone would have lost signal.

Any idea how long this should take? I imagine it might be a bad idea to unplug the phone from the car charger and bring it inside while this is going on. What do others here think?

Thanks!

Anyone in the UK got the official ICS yet? I've got the unlocked international version, annoyed it hasn't appeared yet :(
