Root ICS Developement: End User Discussion

Not sure how close all that is for debian. I know someone around here uses Fedora. Also I know plenty of folks on other phones use all kinds of different distros. The ubuntu guide is for new to Linux folks (as ubuntu seems to be the go to distro for new folks), it shouldn't be hard to find the repositories you need on another distro if you have been using it long.

Well, my first build of android using debian sid :) (I also build linux distro's aptosid & siduction based on debian sid)

Code:
Zipping package...
Signing package...
Cleaning up...

Package complete: /home/piper/android/out/target/product/triumph/update-cm-9.0.0.Triumph-Alpha-0.5.2-signed.zip

Crunchbang is a very good no nonsense distro. I really like Arch but you gotta be carefull because you can break it very easy.

Tap on the wifi on/off switch. (Where the text is, not the slider) and it will tale you to the settings then :D

The reason I never tried crunchbang before is because it was based on ubuntu, I am not a fan at all of ubuntu, but, since crunchbang changed to debian, I think I will give it a try.
Move to Debian

As of CrunchBang 10 , the distribution is based directly on Debian and no longer on Ubuntu. As of 7 February 2011, the final CrunchBang 10 was made available for live CD download on i686, i486, or amd64 (Based on Debian 6.0 stable, which was released on that day).

For everyday home use, I use siduction (2 machines) and aptosid (2 machines

Is ICS supposed to have that CRT screen-off animation? I'm not sure if Google took that out, or if it's just not working on CM9 yet.

EDIT: Nevermind. Wasn't Googling hard enough, found the answer like about 10 seconds after I posted this. Sorry! (the answer is yes, btw)

Every time I install an app in CM9, it dumps a shortcut on my home screen. Is there a setting somewhere to stop this from happening by default?

I have a Toshiba satellite with dual core processors(each one clocking in at 1.3 ghz) and 4gb or ram that can dual boot ubuntu,do you think this laptop is capable of building ics or should i not even try?

I build on a 2.2ghz dual core Athlon with 2gigs of ram. It is a very slow process, but it builds without issue.

Yes, it can build it, it'll just take a while. Just make sure that you have enough free hard drive space to be able to effectively build it--at least 40-50 GB or so I'd say--for the source + intermediate files created during the build.

Ok ill try building tonight :) ,by the way how long do you think the whole process will take, and are there any other linux distros that you guys reccomend?

On my Virtual machine that "thinks" it's a dual core processor with 4 MB RAM, it takes somewhere in the 2-3 hour range to do a complete build after a make clean && make clobber.

I just start a build and go do something else.

Edit: And to answer your question on other linux distros, unless you're a linux expert/power user, I'd recommend sticking with Ubuntu. Most of the common guides that you'll find are for building using Ubuntu. The Android AOSP team uses Ubuntu and tests building Android AOSP on ubuntu. So there's a lot of reasons to use ubuntu instead of other distros.

However, if you feel that you're well-versed in another distro, go ahead and try. Just know that you'll probably find less documentation/help when trying to build using another distro.

I was thinking. All this progress is pre-CM9!

Are the development builds based on a CM9 alpha?

Does this mean that once CM9 is final we'll have a beta release shortly? It's just stagering how much is being accomplished.

The builds are cm9 with stuff added in for it to work specifically on the MT and some other minor touch ups.

marc is correct. We are using the latest code that cm9 is pushing into their sources. However, that doesn't mean that we are "tied" to whenever they decide to go "beta" or rc1.

Basically, we still have major functions that don't work--specifically, camera and hdmi. We would need at least "camera" to be working before I would personally think that we're even close to being "beta" candidate-worthy.

After seeing ICS on another Triumph I am anxiously awaiting the fix for the camera, that is the only thing I see that I would absolutely require to be added before I root my phone :D

and this will also be my first root, thats how impressed with this version i am. I can't thank all of you guys that are working on it enough.

I cannot wait to root this thing and experience ICS

Long time lurker, first time poster. I want to say thanks to the devs for all the work that has been done thus far on bringing CM9 to the Triumph. I am loathe to ever have a contract, so VM has been the way to go. You guys are just making the experience that much better by bringing a modern Android build to a (mostly) modern phone. I'm currently running Whyzor's CM7 Reloaded, and I cannot wait for this. I actually have a backup image of CM9 saved that I keep up-to-date as I see new alpha's. Aside from the camera, even in alpha state the ROM is rock solid.

Hats off to the dev team. You guys rock.
