Help ICS Update failing VIA Kies

I was fortunate enough to get a phone from Poland, so i went to update to ICS today with no luck. I keep getting this error:

and the android character stays on my screen and it says "Downloading..." underneath of him and under that "Do not turn off target !!".

The phone stays plugged in the entire time. During the update, Kies turns the phone off and back on. Windows identifies it as a new piece of hardware and installs it like its never seen it before, then this error pops up. Any ideas?

EDIT: I CAN turn the device off and then back on again into gingerbread.

Samsung is great as hardware developers but crap with software. Dump Kies and use Odin.

well, i decided to try to reset the phone to factory default and ran the update again.

Can you confirm that the 4.0.3 update was successful? This may prove useful in the coming days if others run into a similar issue.

Slug, everything finished great. I no longer have a screenshot ability for whatever reason but im trying this out on chrome beta atm. so happy. Ill snap a pic to.orrow with my cam. thanks man.

Yes, I had the same problem during the first try to upgrade. But I didn't reset, I just did what those instructions say (as in the pic above).. and then it went on well.

Else, yes.. one can use Odin and install the upgrade.

I think I remember reading the buttons for the screenshot have changed on ics. Its volume down (or up, can't remember) and power.

Hi I got exactly the same message and followed the instuctions, worried as the phone said downlaoding do not switch off but did what the instuctions said. (phone still in gingerbread whern I switced it back on), 2nd time I tried, it was fine but the downloading part got stuck on 0% and sat there for 10 mins. I briefly unplugged and replugged back in the usb straight away (risky I know) and it started downlaoding onto phone immediately - now running ICS jus about to have a play around but thought that if anyone else is having the same issues then maybe (if you're not scared) try it

I can confirm this works... just follow the instructions from initial post.

If phone is actively downloading you will see a blue progress bar below the Android and Do not unplug target message.

Could anyone help? Tried to update via kies and it stuck on 82% and now it says 'firmware upgrade encountered problem....' Please help,
