Root If I root and the VM release 2.3

are you still able to upgrade to the new firmware? and if so, and i've removed any bloatware, does it get re-installed by the update?

If you accept an Over The Air update, you will no longer be rooted, and you will get all the new bloatware.

This is in theory, no one has gotten an OTA update from VM on this phone yet, so no proof available.

in a lot of cases attempting an over the air update while runing a custom mod can be dangerous to your device.

Most Custom Roms are faster, much more light weight and best part are available anytime you want to update or revert back to a stock ROM

And contain more bugs then the stock Rom.so yes maybe perfomance wise it is better then stock, but you have to give up functionality, and unless you know how to create and update custom roms, you are at the mercy of someone doing it for free,so updates that address issues are crap shoots.both stock and custom Roms have there faults,it is up to the user what sacrifices he want to make.

once VM updates to 2.3, there will be a lot of custom ROM options, and probably with less bugs than AOSP (even though it's a pretty nice ROM). i'd recommend ignoring the update and then browsing the forums about 2-4 weeks after.

I would say if they do eventually update us to gingerbread hold off on updating until a root is obtained on the new update.

QFT. Stick with a custom Froyo ROM until a stable Gingerbread ROM is released. Otherwise, you'll get all of Virgin Mobile's crapware. Honestly, I'd rather run Froyo with my 170mb of internal memory (thanks to the Bumblebee ROM) than run stock Gingerbread with little internal memory.

If you are running a custom ROM, who cares about internal memory? Use one of the 2sd methods, and you will never have an issue with internal memory running out. I run aospCM7 with 189 apps installed, and I still have 104MB free on internal.

Jerry, remind me to read up on how to do that someday, lol!
