im about to update my mikfroyo v4.5 to v4.6 and cm7 rc2 to cm7 rc4. do i have to do a full wipe before i flash these roms or can i just wipe dalvik and cache before a flash? im assuming ill have to do a full wipe for mikfroyo because its changed from deodexed to odexed. but what about cm7?

You shouldn't have to, You can try it and see, if it is an issue, wipe and reflash.

ive read in here that people have had problems when not flashing to AOSP roms (even when going from an AOSP to another) if you dont do a full wipe, just backup your sms mssgs(if you feel so inclined) wipe everything and go for it, but as xtreme said, you shouldnt have to, emphasis on shouldnt lol

I have had issues restoring nandroids from sense to aosp and back without full wipes.....now I wipe everything at least once when nandroiding and sometimes when I update a rom and just set it back up afterwards.
