I'm pleased w/ 2.2

Hi.

I see so many threads saying how displeased users are with the roll out of 2.2. I must chime in and say I am not seeing the same ill effects they are.

Aside from having to delete and re-register my Exchange account, everything is just great.

Facebook is pushing notifications, which means I can stop using Tweetdeck to monitor Facebook.

Notification sounds are broadcast through Bluetooth. This was not the case for me before.

Plus.. I'm a type & design kind of guy. The ability to change the typeface of the phone is awesome.

While I don't notice any serious performance increase, the ability to play flash games and use the kongregate.com app is a big plus (and a minus for my work productivity!).

I miss being able to put my phone on "silent" or keeping the display on for longer than 10 minutes

This as me asking.. why would you need your screen on for longer than 10 minutes? I can't think of any reason I would have... makes me curious! :)

As for the "silent mode" if you change the Vibrate setting in the Sound Settings menu to "Only when not in silent mode" you regain "Silent Mode"

Hopefully this helps. I know it's not a perfect solution, but it's better than nothing. A decent compromise that may work for some.

I agree. Just about everything is better in 2.2 for me. Very very pleased.

Will be a little issue for me, have my workout routines typed as documents, left my display on for 30 min when working out so I wouldn't have to wake the screen up every time I checked to see what the next excercise was. 10 min won't be that bad though

Why can't they put all the changes in the changelog?
Thanks for the tip for silent!

as for wanting the phone to stay on longer than 10 minutes...

WDTV remote control app
monitoring security cameras
bedside clock
desk clock/photo frame at work
kitchen timer (longer than 10 minutes)
as a flashing SOS I could need somewhere (hopefully not but there's an app for it)
there's probably more

most of the above are also reasons I don't like the menu/home/back/search buttons always being on and so bright!

I found kind of by accident that one way to shut them off is to switch off the display with a short press of the power-on button, then press it again and unlock it. The buttons along the bottom won't be illuminated after that until you've pressed them. Bit of a hassle, though, and of course they come on and stay on after you've used them.

I'm brand-new to smartphones and so have almost no experience yet with this phone. I have noticed threads here in which people note poor battery life now under 2.2, compared with what they had before. I don't have any pre-2.2 experience to compare with...but I have noticed pretty lousy battery life, all right. And I took some of the participants' advice and shut off various kinds of notifications -- and I make sure to close down apps I'm not using. There is no way the standby time will come even remotely close to Samsung's specs.

One suggestion was to do a full factory reset following the 2.2 update. I saw some threads in which people reported better battery life afterward. Problem is, I'm afraid I'm going to lose all my contacts with the rest, and haven't done it yet (until I can figure out how you can back 'em up).

Coming from a completly stock 2.1 to 2.2 I am completly satisfied. Every thing works as it should and battery life and GPS acquisition time and accuracy is great!

Any idea as to when Verizon will get around to OTA-ing 2.2 to all Fascinates? I'm seeing all these posts about it but I'm still on 2.1 and envious (I think).

stock 2.1 to 2.2 and loving every minute of it.

i was shocked how much juice my battery now saves by only using mobile data when i need it.

also since having it off it seems to also be preventing a lot of the recurring pop up apps from automatically loading back up after you task kill them.

these two changes alone have increased my batteries life tremendously.

however i can see how if you rely heavily on instant notification, than mobile data off could be a problem.

I love all the little touches included, like the brightness adjustment by swiping left and right on the notification area on top of the screen (took some getting used to , but I think I have that down now, nice touch!), the built in screen capture by holding down the BACK key and hitting the power key, etc, etc. The updated G-mail and Youtube apps are great as well. I am super pleased.

Im happy with it too! My husband and I both did the update at the same time and his took longer and he hates it. So he rooted his phone. giving him a month with his rooted before I think about doing it! If we mess up our phones we cant afford to buy 2 new ones at no discounted price!

any downsides to turning off mobile data? what do i need it on for? sorry for my noobishness.

Yeah i'm very pleased with the update as well, the phone just seems to fly now. Also with all the little things you can do with it now just makes it like a brand new phone.

I'm just happy for you all finally getting 2.2. I came from a 2.2 phone to the fascinate back in december and quickly jumped ship when I saw how restricted the phone was(I'm not a rooter, sorry).

Good for you guys.

are you not able to do it manually?
from HOME --> MENU-->SETTINGS-->ABOUT PHONE-->SYSTEM UPDATES-->CHECK NEW

Holy crap that is awesome! I had no idea about this feature. Any other little hidden tidbits like this that wouldn't necessarily be found in the menu options?

Wow, some good info re: features I didn't know 2.2 had!

Overall, I consider it a minor improvement. GPS seems to lock faster (not really an issue before -- 2-3 minute on 2.1 vs. 0-1 minutes on 2.2). Battery life is about 40% less than I had w/ 2.1 -- I could usually get 24 - 36 hrs on a charge before. 12-24 hrs now. Maybe that is the result of some setting that changed on the upgrade of which I'm unaware -- I wish the 2.2 upgrade had left my screens and setting the way they were! Phone seems a little smoother overall. The option for a password or PIN for Exchange use is great, as my password was very inconvenient to enter, and I can now use a 4 digit pin. Other features are minor improvements, not worth my checking this site every day or so for the last 5 months to see if/when 2.2 was coming!

That said, I was quite happy w/ 2.1 as it was, so I'm fine w/ 2.2 as well. The phone is a fantastic device overall.
