I'm ready to root---HELP!!!

I'm ready to root the hell out of my phone, Sprint Hero 2.1 software 2.32.651.2.

The more I read about it the more I run into the issues with the latest Sprint software patch, which I have, and it debunking popular rooting methods.

Most of the recent posts I've seen are from a few weeks ago so I'm a little wary taking any of those paths since I'm not sure if they take into the account the patch.

Would someone be able to lead me in the right direction? Someone who can walk me, step by step, a little as I do this for the first time?

Thanks!!!

With the build you are on, the one click z4 method should work fine for you.

Once you are rooted, download rom manager from the market. Then flash clockworkmod recovery v2.5.0.1 and make a nandroid.

Once you successfully make a nandroid, then you may do whatever you please. Flash a rom, stay stock and delete bloatware.

I would highly recommend downloading Titanium Backup from the market :)

No, it will simply root your phone and also give you an unroot option once you are rooted. Once you are rooted then you can download Rom Manager as Andy mentioned and make sure you flash a recovery image and before you do anything else make sure you make a Nandroid back up of your rooted stock ROM, then you can flash Roms once you are backed up

Thanks for your help!!

Will the z4 method wipe out my phone and all of it's currently installed applications?

I just switched from a Pre to a Hero because the Pre has an incessant amount of problems. I got pretty good at modifying WebOs, and was even prepared to fully flash the phone to Cricket if Sprint decided to screw me. The day before I did get screwed by Sprint my 8th Pre basically destroyed itself. They offered me a Hero for free, thankfully, but now I am stuck with a completely unfamiliar OS and I have no idea what to do. I updated the hero to Android 2.1 update 1 and the build is 2.32.651.2. My phone was shut off today and I desperately need to flash the phone over to Cricket. Can someone PM me or Email me and walk me through step by step. I am facing terms I barely understand and don't really want to brick my brand new Hero. It would be amazing if I could get some help! Thanks! By the way, from what I have seen so far, Android beats the **** out of WebOs.
