Few questions first

1. what is the newest and most stable cm 7 and is there a page that list what functions do and don't work.
2. I know there is a prog to back up everything but does it back up all contacts and message and all that? Can I just move all apps to sd card? I don't care to reinstall but I don't want to have to download and set all that up again.
3.where is the link that tells step by step how to do it and what all is needed. And how to undo it if something goes horribly wrong.

Thanks for all the help and if you can think of anything else I should know or read please tell me.

1. Cm7 g60style is probly what you want, lists working and non working things on page, mostly HDMI is what doesn't work on cm7

2.There may be programs but not sure about what they save, contacts are synced to Google if u have that option on so there usually not a problem, apps can be backed up with a program but if u do this you Must be sure not to load any system files back onto the new rom, my messages always get cleared, I'm not sure how, or if you would even want to back them up, when you create a nandroid backup of you stock phone which you should do, it'll save all the messages, but upon start of a new fresh installed rom the messages would be empty

3. Your looking for the thread stickied by scary alien, installing cwm recovery and custom Rom might be the name, also check agentc's sticky posts, and I would suggest searching minus5252 YouTube channel and watching some of his videos for doin most things in this site to our phones

1)I don't know if you could concider it the newest, but it's rock solid. Look at CM7 g60 style r0.6 The Slaughter House

2)SMSBackup will do the messages (in the market), Titanium backup can do the apps, but you need to be rooted (or search for how b_random14 did it). Tokerns mentioned google backing up your contacts, they just need to be in your gmail account. Check that out first! If they aren't, they will be lost if you do a factory reset. (something you need to do to move from FroYo to Gingerbread) All of the ROMs have instructions on how to install. And if that's not good enough, you could look at the stickies that's on top of the "all things root" page or ask in the thread.

3) You should start here. This will be where you need to begin. Everything will start from a custom recovery.

Oh, wait! There is a new recovery. The one in the link (3) is what I have, but sense you are starting off anyway, you could use this one

so you're saying I would have to make a list of all my apps then download and install them all again? And all of my contacts? If I can't sync them with Google, whichI'm sure I can just never tried, them I'll lose them.

Basically when you do this it's like when I got the phone out of the box? I have to start over....surely you can back up all apps. Ooh well, if it's worth it.

Sorry to say you'll very likely have to reinstall (I've been through two ROM changes). Look at it this way, gives you a chance to go through and weed out apps you might have currently installed that you didn't really care for or just don't use much. :)

Open up contacts, hit the menu button. Look under "choose contacts to display" and touch your accounts. Clear the check from those accounts. That would show you the contacts that are on just the phone.

And as for the apps part, Titanium needs to access a part that it would need root access to back it up. As a note for TBu, sometimes the apps don't work under GB that worked under FroYo.

Edit: Oh! If you go to google play on your computer, you could go through the apps you had installed and reinstall them from there. Also, you could plug in your phone and charge the phone while running WiFi. Make sure you have the sleep policy set to never while charging or never
Settings--> Wireless & networks--> WiFi settings-->(menu button) Advanced--> WiFi sleep policy

If I remember right, all my contacts from my optimus v just showed up on the triumph when I activated it and installed and signed into the Gmail app. So just make sure you have Gmail up and running first. This also happened when I moved to CM7. I also think all my apps re-downloaded when I signed into the play store, just be on wifi when ya do it. I went from tickerguy reloaded to g60 style and I think it's better. It's definitelyworth it

DONT DO IT! DONT JUMP OF THE EDGE!!!

oh wait.... this isnt that kind of thread. :p good luck bro :D you will enjoy the roms

(the title of this thread is pretty deceiving)

ok so I did that with the contacts and nothing showed up so I guess it is set up through gmail. Easy enough. So is there an actual web page for cm7 and all the other things I need that tells what they all do or should I just read the forums? The links in the forums you gave are awesome I just want more info...is that crazy?

I don't have a ton of apps so downloading again is no big deal,I just don't want to do all of the settings again but it's no big deal.

Haha no I'm not jumping!

That would be the ROMs pages. If you look at first sticky, you will see the ones that will work on our phones. We don't have an official release of CM7, so start at the link.

Edit: Oh, one more thing. Do a Nandroid backup!
When you get the recovery on there, look for "Backup and restore" and I would do two backups. They can take over a gig if you have bunch of stuff on there, but that can be reduced by clearing cache and dalvik cache.
