Root Important post by P3droid (For GB users especially)

They couldn't track through market purchases. Just look at the reviews for some of the root apps. You'll see multiple that say "my wifeez won't turn on. This junk doesn't work" because they aren't rooted. Anyone can download them. Monitoring our phones and programming them to report to verizon if a certain condition is met is a different situation. Big deal if they know I'm rooted. I actually proposed they implement that feature. But I don't like the way they're going about it.

I have been with Verizon for over 10 years. And I have seen many similar rumors in varying degrees. Some have come true others just rumors. When it comes down to it Verizon has the best US network for my needs. I have been with them for over 10 years and they always go out of their way to make things right for me. If the DX becomes a timebomb, cloaking device or and monitoring tool. I will just go in and get a Bionic when it comes out. I played with a test model and even for early hardware the thing was badass. Fast and fluid. I would not miss root on that device.

The verizon police are coming......The verizon police are coming......
Better hurry and SBF before they get to you.
lol @ all of this

FWIW,
XDA has a thread ongoing about an additional program that tracks Wireless tether usage and reports it back up to the carrier. It's burried into the stock ROM and you can't get around it.

Did I mention that the carrier was Sprint. Yes, you see that correctly.

Sprint is already tracking people's wireless tether usage. Only way to get around that is full ROM like CM7 or such that hasn't been built off the stock release. Can't do full ROMs on Moto devices because of the locked and encrypted bootloader.

So people thinking of defecting, what is it they say about out of the frying pan into the fire?

I'm not justifying Verizon's decision. I can understand they want to make as much money as possible, so they can put that into infrastructure improvements (LTE), to make the best network even better. That gets them more customers and even more money. They make billions, but also have to spend billions.

I get that.

But to go after a minority of thier users who rooted doesn't make any sense. I primarilly use Root to backup my phone and programs.

I'm not overreacting right now. I've been with Verizon for over 15 years. This could turn out to be as much a non-issue as eFuse was. Or, we could all get hit with TOS changes, at which point I'll refuse the changes and cancel my contract with no penalties.

But be aware that no carrier will be safe from here out.

Is that really necessary? I SBF'd back (although that lasted less than 5 minutes due to a CONVENIENTLY timed release by Drod :p) and respect anyone who chose to do so.

"and the use of non-approved firmware on the networks."
This is what I'm concerned about. This has the possibility to affect everyone here in the Root sub-forum (assuming VZW goes all the way).

I understand you guys are poking a little fun, but like Steven said, some people are a little worried about this so take it easy.

Edit:
I've not heard anyone talk about Google's new stance on Android. I'll post the link one more time and would like to here what you guys think about it (in light of what we know now).

^^ Your link didn't work. It told me ATT was not available in my area. Can you summarise?

Are there any usage limits for my broadband service?

Yes. As of May 2, 2011, AT&T's residential DSL High Speed Internet plans will have a usage allowance of 150 Gigabytes ("GB") per month, and its residential U-verse High Speed Internet plans will have a usage allowance of 250 Gigabytes ("GB") per month. The usage allowance is the amount of data you can send and receive each month.

@p3droid lets clarify things, the tracking and database was done long before we leaked GB, so when you rooted when u got ur phone u were got.

He's awake.

Really this is not needed ...as I said in my earlier posts if someone wants to something to their device like sbf since they are worried let them ...its their decision and to be honest if it affects you that much to the point where it needs to be commented on then maybe other avenues of occupying your time would be better sought after ....in the same time it takes to make a sarcastic comment you could be typing something useful

That's the impression I got when I asked him about on twitter it last night. Eagerly waiting for this 3rd shoe...

So on the rooting front since they have already been tracking this what has happened to date? Nothing. Is the third shoe falling what is going to happen going forward, maybe.

My bet would be that Verizon will start enforcing their warranty being voided if you root, which the majority of us already go by. I knew what I was doing when I rooted my phone, I read the instructions 6 times and looked at both sides. Since this community is so strong and helpful and no one really had bricked their phone I felt it was safe. So far I have been right, I have only freaked out one time with my phone, but a quick post and an answer I had it fixed.

To be honest I think this would be a good policy for Verizon to enforce. Now if we could just get them to understand that there is no reason to keep the bootloader locked if they go to this.....wishful thinking.

This would be the optimal outcome.

"c. security item number 2 would be used to track, throttle, even possibly restrict full data usage of these rooted phones."
Again, this is unconfirmed but still...

Exactly my thoughts. Will this kill rooting? No. Will this remind people what they are getting in to? Definitely.

I stand corrected. Rooting and ROMs are definitely going to change. This won't be fun anymore. Just a hassle. My 2 cents.

Don't be so sure. Some of the key points in P3droid's post are incredibly frightening .

3. In new builds the tracking would be built into the firmware and that if a person removed the tracking from the firmware then the phone would not be verified on the network (i.e. your phone could not make phone calls or access data).

5. Verizon has successfully used its new programs to throttle data on test devices in accordance with the guidelines of the program.
