Help In need of help!

I purchased a Droid Incredible off of Craigslist (against my better judgement) and attempted to activate it on my account. The ESN was clean but there is no network connection. VWZ tech support had me enter the epst menu and tried to manualy program the device. When it comes to calling *228 for activation all I get is dialing and then no connection/call lost. Is there anyone out there that can point me in the right dirrection of a fix? I've heard that the radio is defective, that it may have been flashed to another carrier, so I'm not sure what is going on if anyone out there can shed a little light I would appreciate it. I have a rooted Vortex right now so I am fairly educated in android/rooting and such. If I cannot find an answer I will be selling the phone. Thank you for looking.

Doubt it's the wrong radio or it probably wouldn't even boot. Never know though, what baseband does it say it has...Menu > Settings > About Phone. Post the software info too.

Looks legit but I had a thought. I wonder if somebody did the DUN hack for free wireless tether if that could screw things up on the phone end? Not even sure if that would stick since you said the ESN was clean but I'm just spitballing.

Here's the steps to do the hack...you could change back to the default setup if that's the case:

1) Dial ##778, SEND
2) EPST dialog comes up. Select 'Edit Mode'. Enter SPC (000000), hit OK.
3) Scroll to down to 'Security', select it. Change 'S.IP DUN User name' to yourvzwnumber@vzw3g.com (from yourvzwnumber@dun.vzw3g.com)
4) Hit back arrow to go back and go/select 'M.IP Default Profile'. Change 'DUN NAI' to yourvzwnumber@vzw3g.com (from yourvzwnumber@dun.vzw3g.com)
5) Hit menu button, and 'Commit Modifications', phone will save changes and reboot.

If that's not it, only thing I can think of is a factory reset or run the RUU to do a fresh load of stock over the top. Perhaps a missing or corrupt system file? Hopefully the radio itself isn't borked on the hardware side of things.

iowabowtech - thank you for all your help so far. It looks like the settings for the DUN is all correct. I have tried the factory reset but with no avail. I have been doing some homework and it looks like there has been a similar problem and if the tech dept. removes and readds your data plan it may solve the problem so I will try that route and post my findings. Is there a tutorial or walkthrough for running the ruu for a fresh load of stock that you could point me to? Thanks again.

follow up: I called VZW again, manually programmed the phone again, nothing. I asked the tech to remove and reinstall my data plan, first I was told that if I remove my unlimited plan I would have to go back with the 2GB plan, then the tech said they could not remove the data plan, tried, but could not remove it. I ran the RUU and have not tried to activate again but at this point everything looks the same. So all that leaves to my knowledge is a defective antenna?

The RUU is at the bottom of the first post. It's the most user friendly, all you do is download it to a PC and run it as a Windows program. You end up connecting your phone via USB and follow the instructs.

Everything before the RUU link in the first post is the alternate way...if you already have a FAT32 formatted SD card, it's the quickest and easiest way to reload stock. Once the PB31IMG file is on the root of the SD card, it will auto load from hboot (bootloader). Access hboot on the Inc by holding volume down while pressing power button.

Both of the above methods result in the exact same end, it's just a matter of choosing one.

Ok, we were posting at the same time so nevermind the above. Sorry but I don't have any other ideas, if a full reload doesn't do it, and *228 doesn't work at this point, I'd have to lean toward hardware failure of the radio.

If it is Verizon and their data plan, you would first have to be connected with their system.

Have you verified that you are not in a Verizon dead zone? Hard to believe, but Verizon does have dead zones even in fairly populated areas. Next time you talk with a VZ tech, ask him what the nearest tower is and if its up.

With regards to the antenna, if I remember correctly, the Dinc has an integrated antenna system that is partially printed on to the motherboard, so I don't think that is the case.

Have you verified any other functions with the phone? I would try connecting to Wifi and see if you can surf and log in to google. This would give us some idea if the ROM is messed up. The radio part of the rom is separate, but the ROM (OS) still has to work.

Tried activation through the website again and still no dice. The wifi works fine, google account sync fine. To add more information, when I go into wireless & network > mobile network is grayed out with a green check "turning on", but nothing ever happens. Also when I go to wireless & networks > mobile network settings > system select I have Home, Automatic A and Automatic B with Automatic B selected. I should only have Home and Automatic correct? I am about at wits end with this thing. Tomorrow you will be able to find it on ebay! Also, thanks for everyones help.

Try turning airplane mode on for awhile then back off just for kicks. That's reset some 3G problems for some people. The ruu should have fixed it though if it was software related. Worth a shot but that really verifies the hardware theory.

From the forum rules:

Tethering without required plans, working the system to return devices you broke, etc:

Tethering without a carrier required required plan is theft of services. You are stealing from the carrier. It goes beyond modifying your own personal device.

This is something we are not willing to help members do. Much like talk of how to work the system to return devices you've broke, etc. That too is theft.

Some say, "well, rooting is against the TOS, so....". Rooting, if against the TOS, could result in a suspended account. That is on you and your responsibility and we're willing to aide in letting you make that choice. It is your device, you should have that choice.

These issues aren't related to rooting in this sense and shouldn't be compared as such. This is a decision made by the owner of this privately run site, which we have the right to do and enforce.

Risking your device == ok.
Theft == not okay.
