Help Increasing signal strength

Lurker
Does anyone know of a way (if there even is one) to increase signal strength of the Captivate by getting into a service menu or any other way?

My phone will fluctuate from zero bars to 4 bars with the phone in the exact same physical location and it is getting frustrating.

Any help will be welcomed!

Perhaps you'll get some suggestions, but I've grown to not trust the signal strength meters in these devices (and I mean any device, actually, not just Androids).

I've experienced good quality and no dropouts in voice and text/data coming and going on various phones I've had over the years, irrespective of one bar, two or four.

I think your -db reading gives a much better estimation of signal strength, in "about phone" "status." The lower the number the better. Mine's at -78 at the moment.

I had 2 bars showing and the person on the other end sounded fine, but she couldn't make out what I was saying. Frustrating as hell.
2 bars also makes it very hard to place a call on my phone. Keeps disconnecting.
The bars are not a reliable indicator.

In talking with a friend who was having the exact same issue with AT&T, they told him to turn off the 3G on his phone and after that, he did not drop any more calls and talk quality went up.

So I called AT&T tech support and this is what they told me to do and it seems to be working well.

Go to phone (like you are going to make a call) and type in *#*#197328640#*#* - exactly like that, then select 1 (Debug Screen), then 8 (Phone control), then 4 (UE State control), then select 3 (change rat to gsm). It should say Change mode=>GSM, then back all the way out.

If you download SamServMode from the Market it will take you directly to that menu, so you don't have to remember the # sequence.

And after you do Change mode > GSM, click the menu softkey key > END -- does the same thing as backing all the way out, but faster :)

Where are you? I've never seen anything less than -88..best is usually around -92. At this moment in my house its at -107...barely functional
