Incredible grounding flaw?

Things that I've set my DI on and tried using it:

wooden stools
computer desk
bartop
couch
ipod
pillow
car seat
pile of laundry
xbox case
unopened package of Johnsonville brats
a cat
a dog
my brother's head
the new issue of Playboy
a potato
$427 in cash
jar of peanut butter
the classified ads
a stripper's breasts

... worked fine on all of them.

Okay ... so I made up that last one. :D

Well duh, everyone knows it works on $427 cash. The problem doesn't start until you've got at least $517 in cash... with no $5s and at least 7 $2s.

Never had this problem, but for the record cars are not grounded. They sit on 4 rubber tires.

Umm actually cars are grounded by the Negative on the battery also known as the GROUND. Amps (stereo) are grounded simply by running it to the Ground on the battery or to a Metal bolt on the car so yes cars are grounded.

As far as the non responsive screen. I have it also and it bothers me. When it's sitting on my bed or couch it becomes unresponsive. I'm not sure about the car because i don't have a car dock.

I've encountered this issue very sporadically. After reading this, I tested it on a few things (although clearly, not as thoroughly as brandonhutch) and couldn't get it to act up. I'm sure it will happen only when I don't want it to. BTW, brandonhutch, how did you get your phone to sit on a potato????

Mine also works fine in all these situations......and I even used ALL $2 bills. :D

So I placed it on a stack of styrofoam plates and it worked fine. It is, however, in a case. I wonder if the case resolves the issue? Or has anyone been able to make it unresponsive even with the case on?

just tried it on my INC... I can't recreate it on styrofoam and as for the car dock it will work fine as I always have it plugged-in in the car.

I'm going to ignore it for now it's only certain situations where it doesn't work kind of rare. And I rarely if ever use my phone while it is sitting/resting on something. I will change my mind though if this happens when I find the desk cradle and car dock I want and it doesn't work in one or both of them. I'm sure this will be made known to veriz and HTC ought to be interesting to see their response.

Sorry, but technically you are incorrect. The car's electrical system IS grounded (within its own environment) in the way you describe, but the car itself is not grounded to the Earth (due to the non-conductive rubber tires). If you doubt this, drive into a power pole and when the still-hot power line falls on the roof of your car, step out onto the ground and let us know if you get electrocuted or not :p

I tried it with the silicone case off and it still doesnt respond when on thick cloth objects

I tried it with the back case off and still no luck

After thinking it over last night though I decided im not going to return it. After reading all the horror stories about getting refurbs I figure its just not worth it. My phone is flawless and if I put it back in the box it would look brand new. I wouldnt want to receive a phone with cosmetic defects or even worse, other hardware issues I dont currently have.

It is annoying when the problem arises, but theres a very easy fix (hold it/charge it) so its no big deal.

Yea, I'm kind of thinking I'll just keep mine, even though it has the problem. I don't mind that it doesnt work well on my bed...I can just pick it up.

The car dock would be the biggest issue for me...and I don't have it yet. And to counter the problem there I need to keep it plugged in (GPS murders battery anyways).

What bothers me the most is that I didn't get a perfect phone.

I'm kinda sorta happy to see there's a thread on this because I noticed this issue in my car and assumed at first it was the charger. From what I can remember, I don't recall having the issue before I installed my ZAGG Invisishield. Also, it seems like I only have the issue for the first few minutes I put the phone in the cradle, after that I think it behaves better. I'll try to pay more attention to it tomorrow.

So is the general consensus so far not all Inc's have this issue? So weird now I notice it more often since this thread was posted :p

Has anyone who could not get the phone to respond with one finger. Put the phone in a scenario they know it wont respond then call it from another phone and see if you can answer the phone when the call comes through by hitting accept or answer call when it comes through. Id like to hear the results on that.

I actually returned my first Incredible thinking that this was some sort of problem with the touchscreen. only to have the same result on my second one. perhaps i should make a video of it. I only notice the problem when the phone is sitting on fabric such as the couch or the bed and when you are only using your finger and not otherwise touching the phone. I think that it may also have something to do with "ME"... i had it sitting on the couch showing how it was unresponsive, and my buddy, without touching the phone, touched his finger to the screen and it worked just fine...
mostly annoying, especially when trying to turn off the alarm in the morning, i have to pick the phone up and hold it in my hand in order for it to work.

Here's an interesting development for me...

I've been using 3 cords from mono-price and the OEM cord to charge the Dinc. All keep the phone fully functional while plugged in to the computer, wall or car (DC). I just picked up a cheap cord on ebay and cannot use the touch screen while it's plugged in.

I have this issue if I lay the INC flat on its back on the arm of the couch. This is the only time I have the issue. I have a car dock that is plastic only and I do not have this issue.
But when I am in my styrofoam castle nothing works..... damn you styrofoam!!! Now all the Iphone users can proclaim that styrofoam is not an Iphone killer. but seriously... do you really need to be touching your phone while driving? and before anyone screams..... 2.2 will resolve the bluetooth calling and once you set navigation you shouldn't need to touch it.

I plugged my Incredible into pair of speakers using the 3.5mm jack. It works but the speakers sound very staticy once in a while. Im using it on the couch. And it also makes the touchpad unresponsive, changes tracks, opens different music players, calls the last person on my call list and activates voice dialing. I don't know if has to do with the grounding issue but its just a thought.

why is this even brought up???? seriously, how many of you people keep and use your phone while its sitting on styrofoam????

My thoughts exactly. These are the people who are mad that it doesn't work underwater, that it can't be thrown against a wall by a MLB pitcher and stay in one piece, and that it doesn't make nachos for you at the end of a long hard day. Personally, it has always worked despite a few quirky bugs which I imagine will be fixed in an update. Finally, a touch screen keyboard that rivals the iPhone in responsiveness. I had to upgrade my texting plan because I found I was texting more when I got this phone.
