Incredible, we're through. Android, you may be next...

Well just moving from an iPhone 3GS (about 5 weeks ago) I have to counter some of mttfrog13 and bisnick's remarks:
I've actually found the multitasking to be quite nice on the Dinc as opposed to Apple's "supposed" multitasking in iOS4 which really just puts most things in a standby state and you hope they still run when you switch back.

The Android apps are really no buggier than those on the Appstore. I've downloaded plenty from each and have seen just as much crapware in Apple as in Google but at least the Market lets you try out an app and get a refund if you don't like it. Try that with Apple and Jobs will laugh all the way to his private jet! Just because Apple has gestapoescue monitoring on the types of apps doesn't mean they are a QA company. Google allows people to try to create something they want and if people want it they download otherwise they don't. Personally I wouldn't even think of installing anything that didn't at least have a nice stead 3.5 and higher score with good comments.

Droid apps are not slow, they don't crash on my phone anyway, and the UI is just fine. Apple devs have had time and I remember seeing them when the first iphones came out and they were horrible compared to the early droid apps. Must be your phone, rom, or mods causing the issue of crashing.

In the 5 weeks I've owned the HTC Incredible I've NEVER ONCE had it spontaneously reboot on me. NEVER, and I flash new ROMS and kernels and install/uninstall apps all the time. NEVER has it rebooted.

Signal bars also really mean nothing, if someone wants to know the strength you need to check the strength in the Phone settings, not the bars. Oh..recall antennagate on the new iPhones if you have something to really fuss about with signal. I've only dropped calls a few times but NOTHING compared to the crappy signal with AT&T and iPhone. A few friends and I who all had iphones went to a large AT&T (then next to Apple store) and checked out signals (these places are supposed to be located in areas where the signal is the best to convince consumers of how good they are) and we all had 1-2 bars of signal strength. I recall Apple even having to send out a patch for their antenna issue.

Not directed at either of you in particular but it's not always a black and white issue with these things.

Casbah, if ur going to counter me, please for the sake of discussion quote my specific remarks as I did for the OP. I think I mentioned that the guys battery problems are probably due to the rebooting which can easily be fixed with a replacement phone. And yes I said I hate the default vanilla theme on a lot of the apps. And yes I said the multi taking needs some work (really tho I think phones need slightly better hardware). On the flip side I said the multi tasking is good for the future of app development. Also I said as u did that the amount of bars doesn't matter that much as long as u have a signal. I just don't see where u "counter" me. I think I am who see both sides and many people aren't willing to admit there is or luckily haven't experienced the bad side of android.

The only points I think aren't debatable (for the time being) are that android apps aren't as polished and slightly more buggy, multi taking needs to be more efficient (whether achieved through better hardware or software), and overall android is the best mobile os.

Android is free like speech, not like cookies. Please explain why the cost of the operating system for my phone should matter to an end user such as myself.

LOL, 5 weeks! Give it a couple more weeks of customizing, collecting, adding, and deleting before you weigh in on the crashing issue.

I had mine crash today following an app download (didn't open it) from Appbrain. There haven't been so many since I quit running live wallpaper, but of all things it should not be the download manager for Appbrain which causes you to lose your desktop screen interface. Being a sucker for eye candy, wallpaper & themes are the only items which I may have been less than careful with installing, otherwise I never download anything with less than four stars.

On the other hand, I agree that the Android multitasking is reliable, but compared to the Palm system, it's a bit clunky. The Palm system which I tried (which is only sold on Palm's ugly, tiny, and plastic devices) has very graceful, and very cool multitasking. I decided that Palm's gloomy outlook, AT&T's insulting service, and having to live with a tiny, awful-looking plastic-screened device outweighed this advantage, but I would like to see such multitasking on the nicer HTC and Samsung phones, if Android can't produce something similar to it.

DroidsIsPerfecked!!! maybe not long but I've not had mine crash doing flashes and mods when others who've had them since new and done many more than I have have seen some. I never run livewallpapers or download/install anything from Appbrain or stuff with a bad review or low stars. Guess that accounts for it.

Used CM, SR Sense and Vanilla, Ruby, Virtuous, Jager, Shadowrom, IncTransparent, upgraded and downgraded radio a couple of times, various other mods, and have not had the Inc reboot. I don't think I need to wait to see what might happen. If it was going to happen it would have already. That's why we do nandroid backups.....just in case...

Wasn't trying to suggest you were saying all that mttfrog. Apologies if it sounded that way or was confrontational. Was alt-tabbing back and forth at work. haha. Know what you mean in the last part though. People WANT android to be better than apple instead of just liking it for what it is. As with all of these tech's there is always a downside..no matter who makes the phone or os.

I have had a lot of hardware issues with my incredible. I don't know whether or not it's just my device but I haven't had a good experience with it.

Hopefully everyone can stop flaming me and we can actually discuss this.

I seem to remember reading that you thought the phone was "creaky". If so, then I know EXACTLY what you mean and it drove me absolutely nuts. When ever I used it as a phone, the constant creaking would distract me from the conversation. I called verizon and they sent me a new back, because I thought it was a defect with the back, not the phone.

Well, I bought an Innocase II and having that case fixed the issue, plus it's a damn nice case.

Anyways, I just received a new battery that I bought on eBay, it's a 1500 OEM RHODIA Battery or something like that... I, like you was dissapointed with the short battery life and wanted to upgrade. So, I just compared the batteries and it looks like the 1500 battery is like, 1mm thicker than the stock 1300. When I put it in and snapped on the cover, it eliminated the creak. It would seem that the battery is just a smidge too thin, which causes it to not fit as snug as it should and makes the phone creak.

So, if you wanted to invest a little, you could solve a couple problems. the 1500 battery was only $10 and was brand new, and the innocase II was $25. I dont know if the phone would creak with a 3500 battery, but Innocase makes an extended case that would null the creak.

Hope this helps

Turns out that people would rather flame me for what I had posted than actually help me figure this out.

I wasn't trying to flame you in the later post, hope you know. Meant no harm. I just know something cause I moved from iPhone to Incredible and prefer the HTC. The iOS is bit more polished but they've been doing it for a couple years longer than Google and HTC. But that polish does come with a price unfortunately: an extremely locked-down phone. :(

Android was a known platform before the iPhone was ever official. Google has been working on android for a very long time and they have done a very good job. Android in it current state, with JIT, is very fast and capable and delectably faster then the iPhone (as many side by side test would suggest)

If you want an even FASTER feeling phone, get a google experience phone. Nexus One is a good example. Any phone that doesn't have some UI overlay that bugs it down will make it feel smoother.

Also, don't compare hardware cause there are hundreds of different android devices. Just get a solid phone that you think will work well for you. For me, thats the droid incredible

and my Iphone roomates says your all gay. But I hate him.

wow only $10 really? care to share a linky please? the creak drives me insane! I actually just bought a white back door and it helped it a little, but the battery would be ideal. how did u manage to get them to send u out a new door free?

You can buy 2 Eris batteries and an external charger for $10 including shipping. It takes up to 2 weeks for delivery from Hong Kong. They work fine and are cheap.

However, Verizon will tell you not to use them because they could ruin your phone. So, I dont use them at all except as Emergency backups.

One thing about the aftermarket batteries (from experience).
If they overheat and wreck your phone, it doesn't matter if you have insurance or not, Verizon is not going to touch it. Just be careful if they start feeling hot.

To keep things short and simple,

I have had a lot of hardware issues with my incredible. I don't know whether or not it's just my device but I haven't had a good experience with it.

Android seems buggy and doesn't seem to be nearly as mature as the iOS. I still have some hope for Android, especially with the new HTC sense and Android 3.0 on the way.

I am considering an iPhone once it comes to Verizon because I feel that Apple's hardware is extremely solid and well built. Their iOS also seems more polished than android.

I DO like android and I DO like the specs on the incredible, I just wish the software was better and I wish the hardware wasn't so cheap.

Hopefully everyone can stop flaming me and we can actually discuss this.
You should get an iPhone.

1. The battery I bought was this one: go to ebay and search for this: OEM HTC RHOD160 DASH 3G TILT 2 TOUCH PRO 2 SNAP BATTERY. That link probably wont work because it's to the one I bought, but if you search, there are plenty available. Edit: Here is a link to the seller's new listing. I offered $10, he took it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260668064519

It's a HTC battery, brand new.. Works fine. I havent noticed any difference with phone heat, and am seeing about 30-45% better battery performance. Also, this didnt ship from Hong Kong. I bought it on a Sunday, it was in my mailbox on Wednesday.

2. I got a free back door from verizon. When I called, I told them that I thought somethign was wrong with my door back because it was very creaky. When they said it wasnt something they could replace the phone for, I told them that the back is loose and my battery would occasionally slip off the contacts (never really happened, but still). Anyways, I just asked if I could get a replacement and a couple days later it showed up. There was a price tag on it, said it was $15, but they didnt charge me or anything. Since it obviously didnt fix the creak, I have 2 phone backs now, just in case anything happens to the other one.

So you are saying you committed fraud for a $15 item?

**edited. I had a nice long explanation here, but then I figured, why should I need to explain anything to you? It was a 3 day old phone. I went to store and the guy there pretty much said "there's nothing I can do about it, and it's not something we will replace the phone for..deal with it." So, I did.

If you really want to be critical, you go troll another thread where people are encouraging others to find a free apk of swype, intentionally brick their phones to get a replacement, set up free tethering or 3g hotspots.. etc.

If there's anything constructive you would like to add, then please do. Otherwise, feel free to ignore me.
