Infuse and Gingerbread update

I'm not fully sure, but I do remember on Windows, it showed 2 things being installed/loading. I don't remember what they were though.
Nothing is working, so I'm backing up the things I can't lose (like documents and gigabytes of music) and then reinstalling Windows 7 as a 32-bit OS. I'm going to do that first thing when I go back to college tomorrow, where I'd have much better Internet access.
I know that 32-bit is considered legacy technology, but my laptop came with 32-bit Windows Vista in the first place, and I guess mine was designed to be like that. It came with only 3GB of RAM (laptops these days, I've seen, come with a minimum of 4GB). It was time to start fresh anyway, so at least I'm not doing it in vain.
I'm sure that I will not have any problems with Kies mini once I do this. I know that reinstalling Windows is a pain-staking process, but I find that being able to get a smartphone and the computer to communicate with each other properly is way more important to me, especially since Gingerbread was supposed to be released months ago and we waited through all of them uneventfully.
In order that I don't screw up the connection process to Kies mini, can you make sure that the steps I will be taking will be correct?
1. Download and install Kies mini for the Infuse from the Samsung website.
2. Reboot.
3. Open Kies mini.
4. At the "Please connect your mobile phone" screen, connect phone (question: Should I set the phone to automatically go into Kies mode, or can I just select it from the three options?).
5. Windows installs drivers.
The reason why I want my phone to connect to Kies mini and have both of them communicate with each other (even if there is no update released yet) is because when the update does get released, I'd have no problems connecting to Kies mini. It'd be a total pain in the neck (understatement) if I waited all that time for Gingerbread and then find out that I can't install it in any way.

Yeah, I think the bugs are making you think through this too hard. Really, when I went through downloading and installing Kies Mini, it didn't feel any different from any regular software installation process. I think if you just follow the directions on screen, it should be ok (that's what I did).
As far as the phone though, I did have to select "Kies" on the 3 options that it gives you when you connect it to your computer. It was only after that that the computer started installing the 2 drivers.
I wish the very best for your Windows reinstallation, but remember, even if in the worst case that Kies Mini still doesn't work, don't forget that the update isn't out yet.
1) Maybe the Kies Mini software right now isn't the final version to be updated. Maybe when the GB update comes, Samsung will release another update for Kies Mini that may be compatible with your phone.
2) You can take it to an AT&T store and see if they'll install the GB update for you. I've also creeped through Captivate forums, and while a few AT&T stores will refuse to update your phone for you due to "security reasons", I've seen many more people who met AT&T reps at the stores who are happy to update their phone for them.
Don't lose hope! I know how you feel, having obsessed over this update myself, and I know how frustrating it must feel right now. But don't give up!

Whatever the cause is, I'm going to get rid of it tomorrow.
BTW, when I chatted with Monica from Samsung yesterday, she apologized that the Gingerbread update isn't out yet, but that it was planned for the phone. No dates have been announced yet, she said. What she also said was that when the update does come out, that's when I'll be able to connect my phone to Kies mini. Basically saying that I can't get past the "Please connect your mobile phone" screen because there is no update yet. Which doesn't seem to make sense, because you clearly have been able to get past that screen.

Wow, that's good news that at least now, the people at Samsung are saying it is coming.
I do have to let you know that though when I connect it, it comes up as "Unregistered Device", which I thought was strange. It does show the correct model name (997) for the Infuse, but I would think if everything was ready to go, it wouldn't say "Unregistered Device" anymore.

mine hooks up with kies mini okay. connects also as unregistered. the update phone part is grayed out, so i'm sure it's because they'e just not updating yet...no problem.
You know, a few months ago, I tried installing Kies mini for the Captivate. It too said that the Infuse was an unregistered device. And I knew that it was because that particular version of Kies mini was obviously not for the Infuse. So I thought that this problem wouldn't exist when the Kies mini support for the phone would come. Boy, were we wrong about that. It's so weird how that happened.

I nervously waited for Windows to finish loading, and then opened Kies mini. It opened and prompted me to connect my phone. I did so, selecting Kies (firmware update), and three drivers installed successfully. Kies mini did not do anything for a few seconds after that, but then...
Voila! The famous "Unregistered device" screen with the grayed-out "Phone upgrade" button appeared! I was so happy! I went to menu and clicked "Install driver" after disconnecting my phone. It actually reinstalled two drivers, but the "Install driver" option was still there after doing so.
But that had no effect on my ability to have Kies mini finally see the phone. I tried it multiple times, and had a 100% success rate so far.
I will continue installing the other software that I need, and see if that changes anything. If something goes bonkers and makes Kies mini suddenly go blind again, I'll blame it on that software. Otherwise, I"ll blame it on myself on my failure to completely uninstall the drivers before installing Kies mini for the first time.
I'm so glad that this has worked out! Now I am soooo ready for the Gingerbread update, whenever it arrives!

I do think you may have not completely uninstalled the drivers for the Captivate. I remember for me, I had to look around my Control Panel for it because it wasn't clearly named "Samsung Captivate Drivers". It was like an odd mixture off numbers and letters and I remember it was by deduction that I realized it must've been the drivers from the ROM flashing dark arts magickery I practiced months before haha.
I myself have not tinkered with the "Install Drivers" option on the Kies Mini, because I think that's there for if your computer does not recognize your phone even after you go through the installation.
Regardless, I'm very much excited for the Gingerbread update. I just hope AT&T does not strangle us with this - if they drag this one out, I know I'll be super sad and exhausted.
I do not have the Captivate, but what I did before Kies mini was released for the Infuse, I had used it as a mass storage device for my computer, which installed the drivers. And those drivers were supposed to have been uninstalled completely before connecting to Kies mini, but that obviously didn't happen. So that's basically why I wiped my computer and started fresh.
Kies mini isn't the only software program that refuses to cooperate with something because you previously had drivers for it. Some (if not many) printer software (well, at least mine) require you to install that software first and then connect the USB cable when it tells you to. If you don't install the software and just plug and play, and install the software at a later date, something similar to what happened with Kies mini (for me, that is) would happen.
You're right; the key is that you must uninstall all previously installed drivers if you want your phone to talk to your computer correctly.
The "Install driver" didn't do anything but reinstall two drivers. However, that didn't have any effect on my phone and Kies mini being great friends now. Previously, they were so mad at each other that they wouldn't even talk.
The reason why the Kies mini was released, as it was implied before, was that Samsung has finished with optimizing the Gingerbread ROM for our phone on their end and knows that it's ready to be released, but instead of having them release it, they send it to AT&T to see if it really is worthy to be released. AT&T is responsible by now, to ensure that they will not delay the update further. My guess is that they will release the update after they finish their sale of the Infuse at $0.01, which ends tomorrow. It's just a guess, so I could be wrong.
I read about how downloading iOS 5 when it was released caused major problems with their iDevices. iTunes said error messages after trying to verify the updates with Apple, which bricked their devices.
Why am I saying this? Well, the same might occur when Gingerbread gets released. Given the anxiety and obsession that most of the Infuse users have about this particular update, they would all grab it almost simultaneously. Kies mini might work like iTunes and verify the update with AT&T or Samsung (I think it's going to be AT&T if it happens). Well, if every Infuse owner tried downloading the update at the same time, the AT&T servers would be clogged, which could brick phones and cause complaints.
I'm not saying that we should not get the update when it's released - that'd be the stupidest thing to do (since we waited so long for it). All I'm saying is that we can, as a precaution, wait a few hours or at least a day to update our phones. I know that sounds discouraging, but IMHO I think that's better than not knowing when the release date is (we're still not sure when it will be). At least then we'd be able to relax, knowing that the update is out and all we need to do is install it.

We all thought it would be OTA (over the air) but when the Captivate got its upgrade a few weeks ago, it was through Kies Mini, even though everyone thought it would be through.OTA. There is a slim chance that it may be OTA for the Infuse, but at this point, it will most likely be through Kies. Otherwise Samsung releasing Kies Mini last week would he really random and pointless, since the Infuse didn't have Kies support all this time.
Nothing is set in stoke yet so don't feel like you need to get Kies Mini yet. Once they announce it officially, they'll prove a list of instructions to follow, just like they did with the Captivate.
It's just that the older Infuse owners like me have been driven into obsession over this superbly overdue and delayed Gingerbread update that we get super excited about any signs that point to its release.
Okay, thanks my friend. Let me ask you this...if I see an app that I want on their site, can I get that via OTA????

What are you referring to when you say "their site"? Do you mean the Samsung Kies Air app?

Well, I remember when we last heard about how it's coming soon, it was under the premise that it would take a few weeks for them to sort out dealing with the servers and whatnot. I think if we don't get anything by mid-February, we might need to get antsy.

The Gingerbread update for the Infuse has FINALLY arrived. Unfortunately, I have not received it yet. Have you?
How did you get it? Did you have the latest firmware (UCKH1) before the update? What area do you live in?
The reason why I ask these questions is that some people over at the AT&T forums are theorizing that the update is a phased rollout and that those who have UCKH1 show "Unregistered device" on Kies mini upon connecting.

I got it last night, too. Downloaded Kies mini last night, installed, started, plugged phone in, selected Kies mini on phone, clicked update on computer...10 minutes later it was done. It is version I997UCKL2. This was done on Windows Vista 32-bit.
No loss of data, apps, contacts, except for Angry Birds, which you can just re-download and start all over. Nice new features. Everything runs smooth.

I did have UCKH1 and live in central Ky. I used mini Kies and when it finally connected it showed "Get update" or similar. Clicked and it worked.
It took forever for the mini kies to install driver and connect to phone. Pc showed ready to use a few minutes before it actually was.
