Infuse and Gingerbread update

I did have UCKH1 and live in central Ky. I used mini Kies and when it finally connected it showed "Get update" or similar. Clicked and it worked.
It took forever for the mini kies to install driver and connect to phone. Pc showed ready to use a few minutes before it actually was.

Mine says "Unregistered device" when I connect. So I cannot get the update until this stupid message goes away! Come on already!

Have you registered your phone on the Samsung website yet? If not, you'll need your IMEI number to complete the process. It can be found on a label beneath your battery, or by entering *#06# in the phone dialer. If you use the dialer method, omit the slash ("/") that will appear near the end of the number string, when entering your info in the website form.

I did that the first day I got the phone, but I guess it can't hurt to do it again.

UPDATE: I tried registering the phone again, but the website said "Your product already exists." So I guess that's not the problem. Other forums have said that those who have UCKH1 on their phones are seeing the "unregistered device" and those who rolled back to UCKD5 (original release) were able to get the update without a problem.

If nothing works, I'm going to have to hop on that bandwagon as well. But I really don't want to revert all the way back to that for this update. I shouldn't have to factory data reset my phone (I did) or go back to UCKD5 (I didn't...yet) to get the Gingerbread update. The update should be a puzzle piece that fits together perfectly, without any conflicts.

What are your thoughts on all of this?

dlee,
Kind of looks a lot like what you and I, and others, went through just trying to get that small OTA update back in June. I am not wasting my time on the phone with support, like I did then trying all kinds of things to "fix" it, but instead bet that the update will come when it comes. This morning I am still getting unregistered.

same here fellas. phone "registered". i did the OTA update last sept i think it was and that installed just fine. but i too am getting the unregistered device problem. I guess that's pretty normal for uch1 people.

honestly, i don't know if i even need GB all that badly. it works just fine as it is now. none of the "updates" look like they do all that much, and i don't like how they changed the silent in the drop shade to flight mode. who uses that anyway?

Like the problem we had last June, who knows what the real issue is. If it is the registration, why does it take so long once registered. So, unless there is something actually wrong, which is what I spent so much time in June trying to figure out, and they are rolling out this release, then it will come eventually. But, like you said, this isn't something I have to have. However, I like to keep updated, and it shouldn't be this hard.

Research that I should no longer be doing shows that those with UCKH1 are unable to download the update. Also, there is conflicting information from some people; some say that the update is being rolled out based on IMEI numbers (if that's the case, we don't need to worry as much), but some others say that the update is released to all users at once.

I chatted with Samsung AND AT&T yesterday, but none of them helped as much as I wanted them to. They suggested that I factory reset the phone to see if that solves the problem. I told them that I shouldn't have to do such a thing to update a phone. But later on, I reconsidered and did a factory reset.

It didn't work. Not only did Kies mini still showed the phone as unregistered, I lost all my files and apps and had to put everything back to normal. Now it's back to normal, having everything that was there before the futile factory reset, but the problem of being unable to update still persists.

Since I and many others have been waiting for so long for the update, I get very OCD-like about it, connecting my phone to the computer countless times a day, with Kies mini stubbornly saying "Unregistered device" and graying out the "Phone upgrade" button on all of the tries that I have done.

somanyapps, I am hoping that the update will come when it comes. The only thing we can do is hope that the rumor about the update being rolled out based on IMEI numbers is correct.

On page 11 of Samsung Infuse 4G? (i997) - Android 2.3 (Gingerbre... - Page 11 - AT&T Community Support, a user posts information about how he or she got off the phone with Samsung and verified that the update is indeed a phased rollout and that it should be fully released in about a week.

dlee,
You got more patience and stamina than I do. I think I'm still burned out from last summer's update. I'm not going to call anyone, factory reset the phone, or uninstall anything. But, I understand the OCD. Hopefully, I've managed not to get too caught up in it, but since this is a process that requires us to connect to a computer we have to check periodically.

Anyway, there are more important things to think about. How much pizza do I need for the Super Bowl? :D

I must say, that update from last summer was one of the hardest updates to get. I got it when I did only because I went to Delaware on that day. If I hadn't gone there, I would have worried my butt off about it and call AT&T and Samsung until late July, when the update got released in the Maryland/Virginia/DC region.

The update from September (the current and problematic UCKH1 firmware) was much easier to get. I got that update because I read that there was another one released, so I hopped on over to the software update page and the update surprisingly downloaded and installed successfully.

But it looks like we'll have to go through all that waiting again like what happened last summer...until the update comes out once and for all. But who knows when that update will be released for us if none of the folks over at Samsung and AT&T realize that there are people who didn't get the update yet? I wonder if they are working on getting that fixed.

Yeah, I didn't have any problems with updates after the June update, until now.

Certainly I agree if nobody called Samsung they might not know there is a problem. If I had any doubt about whether Samsung and ATT are aware of this I would be on the phone. I did call Samsung once this go around. But this is so new, and I'm willing not to frustrate myself to no end in hopes of getting the update sooner rather than later. Especially, when this smells a lot like what happened last summer. If, after some time I am still not updated, but it sounds like everyone else is, then I'll think about a problem specific to me.

I don't think of it as being more complicated. I think of it as it don't work.

Bravo! Now it's been 72 hours since my phone chat with Samsung to re-register my Infuse -- which already showed as registered on the Samsung web site. Everything suggested by Samsung proved useless. Yup, it just don't work! :)

Hi all, new here, found this when searching to find out about the not registered deal from Kies. Mine has been reg. since last year. After trying several suggestions from samsung live chat which finally ended with the factory reset and still no upgrade available and being told there was probably a problem with the IMEU#. I did the GTG unbrick back to the uckd5. The fall-back to 5 worked however now when the phone is connected to Kies, I get
Firmware version: Latest version
Firmware upgrade: 11/10/13
upgrade button greyed out.
So I guess I'll find out what the samsung guru's(ha) have to say tomorrow.

My wife's did the same thing! "Latest version" what a freaking joke! Let us know what you find.

Hello everyone,

I too had the problem that everyone is having with kies mini and Samsung support, but I found a fix and it does not require gtg unbrick to be use..

Here is what I did:
1.Download the .md5 file from this post xda-developers - View Single Post - Official AT&T GB release info he captured it from kies mini. Download the file it will be called I997UCKL2-Homebinary.tar.md5 save it where you can find it like your desktop.

If you have a Mac, then I guess that you could unzip it and flash it thru heimdall, not sure of how to do this as I don't have a mac

2. Download and save Odin3 1.7 from here http://davidstarenterprises.net/Odin3 v1.7.exe to your desktop

3, When the .md5 file is done downloading it will be called I997UCKL2-Homebinary.tar.md5

4. Run Odin, make sure infuse shows up as a com port. Load the upgrade, which will end in md5, into the PDA slot

5.Place phone in download mode here is how you do this

  1. Once the files are selected put the phone in download mode. (Pull battery, replace battery, press and hold both volume buttons while plugging in the USB cable connected to the PC.)
  2. Once you see the device connected in ODIN, hit the Start button to begin the flashing process.
  3. Once the process completes, the phone will reboot.

6. The phone think on the ATT splash screen that is normal with any update.

7. Welcome to Gingerbread. you can verify this by seeing the icons at the top in the tray will be smaller (i.e battery, signal, network,)

8. Go to menu-> About Phone -> Firmware verision will say 2.3.6(GB)
Baseband Version will be I997UCKL2
Kernel version will be 2.6.35.7-I997UCKL2-CL806505
Build Number will be Gingerbreat.UCKL2

9. Pass this around to every one you know that can't update their phones for kies mini including ATT rep they are lost on this as I had an encounter with one today where the samsung rep disconnected the chat with him well he was trying to help me.

10. Be nice to ATT they have no control over this update this is Samsung problem written all over it.

Pulled this from at@t forums here. some crafty guy at xda managed to grab the real file! 304 mb tired of waiting gonnaa do this lol:D

I appreciate the fact that there are some pretty smart people out there who can figure this stuff out. But, is it so important to have GB today that you would be willing go through all that to have it on your phone? One of the reasons I won't call Samsung or ATT. I'm not even willing to reset my phone just because it is part of the script they run you through.

What if we all hit up At&t for warranty issues since the phones aren't updating? Maybe this will get some real answers. I've reset my phone, been told to uninstall kies and reinstall 48 hrs later etc... Tired of being jerked around by Samsung:mad:

Hey all,

After countless times of plugging my phone into my PC and getting the Unregistered from Kies Mini, I found this on Wikipedia's Infuse 4G page. I hope it helps.

Samsung Infuse 4G - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

-Anyone who purchased a 2011-released Android phone, which includes the Samsung Infuse 4G, is eligible to receive the latest version of the smartphone operating system, Android 2.3.x ("Gingerbread").[11]

As of 09/14/2011 AT&T rolled out a 14.5MB maintenance update that, according to Samsung, improves the auto-brightness setting on the phone, enables warnings to display when in Download Mode, and enhances GPS functionality and call quality. Google Books was also added.[12] Firmware 2.2.1, Baseband I997UCKH1, Kernel 2.6.32.9, Build FROYO.UCKH1.

Kies mini for the Infuse was released on January 18, 2012. It is now available to download on the main downloads page for the phone on Samsung's website.[13]

On February 1, 2012, AT&T announced that Gingerbread version 2.3.6 was released for the phone and posted a changelog of the new features. The phone must be connected to a Windows computer with Kies Mini (not Kies) installed to download and install the update. Apple computers and OTA are not supported.

[14] On February 3, 2012, the update went live on Kies Mini.
Samsung Infuses with "Kernel 2.6.32.9" blocks Kies Mini from being able to update to Android 2.3.6 "Gingerbread". An over the air patch should be released by 2/8/2012 to fix this issue.[citation needed]-

This is what gets me. How many Infuse owners are there out there? What percentage of those have the fall update that seems to be a problem? Assuming it to be true, I would think it would have been caught in testing.

Registering at Samsung---GTG unbrick---checking back at Kies mini worked for me. I was able to upgrade to 2.3.6.

However, let this be a big caveat for those following this procedure. I don't know if it was the unbrick or the upgrade itself but it caused LOTS of problems on my phone.

ALL apps didn't work after the upgrade. I had lots of continual messages that so-and-so app stopped working and had to be force-shutdown. Even worse, I couldn't download ANYTHING from the market, which would have fixed the broken apps. After searching online for an hour, I finally found out that I would have to manually reset all of the Samsung functions via the Settings-->Applications-->Manage applications-->All (Clear data and Force stop or uninstall/reinstall). There are four or five different items that need to be reset.

I also had to delete the market app and then pull from a backup I had made with "Astro". After doing this, I had access to the market and was able to uninstall/reinstall ALL of my apps and everything seems to be working. I did lose all of my passwords and info on the "Notepad" native app (this was a big pain which I didn't anticipate). Other problems made me spend time on getting my Contacts (deleting SIM imports and sorting Google Contacts) and sounds (EVERY sound was a *clicking* sound until I selected a default) back the way they were before.

Now after a few hours of work, I have my phone back. Gingerbread on the Infuse seems to have helped two of the major complaints I had: battery life and GPS failing to lock quickly on the Google Navigation app.

I would do it over again but I just wanted to warn everyone it might be a few hours of work if you choose to upgrade in the fashion that I did.

All you had to do was a factory reset, which takes about 3 minutes. A lot of the corruption seems to be froyo files left over when you update. I really recommend everyone to do a factory reset after you update if you used the unbrick method.

Thanks...I found that out AFTER I put everything back manually and posted the above. However, it should be noted that users will have to put back all of their apps and passwords/data after the reset.

I looked up the reset info because, I realized I was having the trouble lots of others are experiencing: the touch screen is very unresponsive after the update. I did the factory reset and it didn't help. However, I did not reformat the internal SD card since I would have lost lots of data that I need to back up first. I'm not looking forward to having to put back all of my apps a THIRD time, but hopefully after the next reset, I will have a fully-functional Infuse.

This is the crappiest upgrade I've ever had to do outside of Windows OS.

If anyone has any procedure to fix the unresponsive touchscreen, I'm all ears!

I experienced the same thing too. Yeah, you definitely want to check the box for wiping the internal because you don't want any froyo leftovers. If it makes you feel any better, I did about 6 factory resets thanks to this update and AT&T customer service line (last month). I did it so many times that I've practically memorized my six home screens. Pretty sad lol
