Root Install of ROM FAILED HORRIBLY!!

So I'm obviously a "Noob". The Optimus M is my first Android based phone. And I had no problem at all when I rooted it in Dec. 2010, right when I bought it. Yesterday, after finally mustering up enough courage to install or flash a custom ROM, it erased everything on my phone. That means all of the apps that I downloaded, my contacts, and anything else that I changed, other than the apps or unwanted software that I erased. I followed the steps provided. First I flashed a backup, or at least I thought I did. And that's when everything went blank on my phone. Then I tried installing the ROM, but the recovery menu does not pop up so that I may start the process.... Any suggestions? ANy help would be greatly appreciated.
 
I always make it a rule to make backups of important stuff with Titanium Backup first, then make a backup using CWM, then restore that backup to make sure it will work if/when needed.

Did you press the correct keys to get into recovery (vol. down, home, power)? If so, I'm without ideas. The custom recovery shouldn't disappear with just flashing a ROM. It will go away if you update/revert to another OS version (i.e. upgrading from 2.2.1 to 2.2.2).
 
first of all, If you have a google account, all your paid apps are safe, all your contacts are safe too, you just sign back in to the same google account and let it sync and redownload all your paid apps by (while in market) hitting menu>my apps and downloading the list, you have to search all the free apps though

second of all, you can't flash a ROM if you didnt enter recovery menu to begin with....
or did it load stock recovery and that's how u erased everything??

3rd of all, did u erase everything on the phone before flashing a custom rom, you must erase data (wipe data, factory reset, whatever its called) and then wipe dalvik-cache.
all this is done in the recovery menu. after that is done, now u can restore your backup or flash your custom ROM...make sure u downloaded your rom with a computer and not your phone, sometimes the phone doesnt download correctly
 
I wasn't aware that I had to set everything back to stock. I have a 2.2, I didn't mess with any of the Metro firmware updates.

Not really setting 'everything' back to stock. Think of it as wiping the slate clean before putting stuff (the new ROM) on it. Yes you will lose any apps that you had manually installed, but if you back them up via Titanium Backup, you can quickly restore them on your new custom ROM.
